Stories about Michigan Football >>>>>> Other

In the last few weeks I've seen a disturbing trend. Someone saying they haven't watched College Gameday in years because they'd rather watch 'Thomas & Friends' with their kids on Saturday morning. Others going to weddings or rehearsal dinners and missing Michigan football because of it. What would Barwis do (WWBD) if he heard that?

The team is going through two a days and spent the entire off-season lifting and running til they puke so that when a large angry man from the other team hits them they'll hit back. Us? We fold at the mere request of someone who may or may not be willing to let us have sex with them later if we play our cards right.

In '06 I was dating a Florida State grad when she got two tickets to one of their home games. It was still about 6 weeks away and she asked me if I wanted to go. My response of "I need to see who Michigan is playing first" may or may not have lead to the breakup one week later, but I did get to see Michigan play that game and that's what's really important.

Tell me I'm not the only one who has done something like that, restore my faith in the Michigan fan base, anyone else have a story?

I solved this very problem by dating(and will eventually marry) a Michigan Girl.
Why waste time with someone less intelligent, who is less hot because she doesn't wear maize and blue?

Of course, before I go on bragging too much I should say that I have to cover up my fiance's (lack of) football knowledge(she asked me who Jake Long was the year he got drafted)

Also married a Michigan Girl.

Her football knowledge isn't the greatest but she understands why I need to watch the games and make one or more pilgrimages to Ann Arbor per year.

No reason to compromise when you can have hot, smart and Michigan grad in one spectacular woman.

Man this really sucks
My story is really good
Multiple haikus

My cousins wedding
I couldn't take anymore
Left during prayer

Went back to hotel
Mallett beat Minnesota
No return to church

Family is pissed
But Michigan is my life
Didn't give a fuck

Cousin called next day
Heart crushed, voice full of anger
Yet still no remorse

Strep throat

During the 1997 Iowa game, I felt like crap the entire game. Laying down on the bench for much of the first half but standing for the complete second half, I refused to let my dad leave early and take us home. Seeing the end of the game was well worth it but I found out on Monday that I had strep throat.

Also, had strep throat during The Horror but left early thinking... well you all know what I was thinking. That decision was probably for the best, though I think the outcome of the game may have led to the longer recovery time.

I don't have a story

But that's because I try to go to as many games as is financially feasible. I still sit in the student section because frankly I cringe at the thought of sitting with the "down in front crowd" (although I will be sitting with the blue hairs for the OSU game... I swear to God if I hear a "down in front" or "please keep your voice down I'm trying to watch the game" I will lose it).

I just thought of a story I dated a girl back in the day and she told me that she loved M Football and I was like "I've heard that before and generally they are just trying to make me feel better". She said "No I really love football I've been going since I was a little girl, etc etc". That year was the 2006 blood bath game at ND where we (for lack of better words) "railed them".

Afterward she to a mutual friend (who eventually told me) that "I didn't know he was so into football... it was kind of scary" she thought about breaking up with me. We finally broke up a few weeks later.

Moral of the story: When a girl tells you that she's "into" football just smile and nod but realize that she isn't your "dream girl" she's just like every other girl.

Like everyone has said in other threads, find someone who will just tolerate your passion for Michigan Football and frankly that's good enough for government work!

I'm 25...

It sure as hell seems like a long time ago.

Seriously though is there no longer years then when you first graduate college and have to go into the work force. You realize how good that you had it in college having no real problems/responsibilities.

She just understands that on Saturdays some screaming at the TV is going to happen. The dog goes back to bed because he's afraid of the screaming curse. He's a rottweiler. The wife continues to put up with it.

Well.. I'm a girl and I'm into football.

There was someone I was dating last fall who had gone to Spain for about a month and I didn't get to speak to him the whole time he was gone. When he came back he wanted to spend the weekend together which would have been great except I had the UM/Wisconsin game to go to. In the end I picked the football game instead of seeing my boyfriend for the first time in a month. I figured I would see him again but I only get Michigan football in the fall. Either way, he was pretty pissed, we broke up a week later because I was apparently "too into football." Eh, it happens. Totally worth it though.

Uh, wow. So many stories are running through my head right now. I dated this girl for a while, and she was really a nasty freak. She just loved to get down with sex all the time. She was like, any time of day, she was like: 'Yeah, let's go. I'm so nasty!' And I'd be nailing her. She'd be like: 'Oh, you're nailing me. Cool.' Oh, she loved to dirty-talk. Totally into it. She'd be like: 'Yeah, let's screw, let's... I wanna bleep.' God, it was so dirty. She'd be like, 'Me so horny, me love you long time.' So...

Actually, when a girl tells you she's into football, file it under "Stuff I have guy friends for". Just from personal experience, spending every moment with someone rarely ends well.

weddings

I hate weddings in the fall, if it is not a close friend I am not going.

I got engaged around thanksgiving my wife really wanted a late summer early fall wedding, I told her after August 1st there will be no wedding, so we got married in july! Why this works is because she loves going to the games and watching the band!

IMHE there is nothing in the world more inconsiderate than a fall wedding. Two of my wive's friends have gotten married during the Notre Dame game two consecutive years (last and this).

I told my wife I would go to neither. We're still married, and I think she still even likes me.

My Sparty hs friend is having his wedding the same day as IU

I know that I'm going to go to the game it's not even a question but I might make an appearance at the reception later in the day. But it just seems like a lot of hassle.

I wouldn't bother to apologize for skipping their wedding until their marriage lasts as long as you have been a Michigan fan.

What if you end up missing the game of the century for a marriage that lasts 3 years?

I've got a cousin getting married in the fall. My excuse is too
much work in grad school...but realistically, I know exactly where I'll be come that Saturday. And it ain't the library.

That, and like, fuck flying that far when I don't even think it'll last a year.

Whoa

Some fall weddings can be considerate. My former college roommate is getting married in Ann Arbor on a Sunday so he can have his Bachelor party on Friday and go to the Michigan game on Saturday. It's gonna be a great weekend I think.

It works

Two of my friends are getting married on August 29 this year. Obviously it won't cause me to miss a game so I don't mind. My point is, it is possible to have a fall wedding, it just has to be before September.

I'm actually pretty lucky though, neither of them are really into football so they're not doing it because they want to watch the game or to be considerate, it just worked out that way.

Yeah, telling a girl you'd rather watch football on TV than football with her isn't going to fly ever. However, if you did that, you must not have been that into her anyway. Makes for a pretty funny story though.

My sophomore year of college,

My sophomore year of college, I tore some ligaments in my foot about three games into the season. We had an away game one weekend against a team that wasn't going to be much of a challenge. We ended up winning 54-7. Anyway, I came into some Michigan tickets that weekend and went to the Iowa game on crutches with a cryo cuff and boot on my foot. Michigan lost 34-9. Not a great day.

In 2007, I skipped a friend's wedding to go to the Notre Dame game. That was a better day.

For the 1997 Championship game....

four of us (two couples) drove to Pasadena cross country in a Honda Civic. The night before the big game (New Year's Eve), I partied with Sam Sword's older brother until the bars closed. Problem was, my girlfriend at the time, did not (more on this later). We slept in the stoop of a shop to be there for the start of the parade, which I caught the latter portion of, not even remembering how I ended up there in the first place.

Waking up to the smell of roses would have been sweet, were it not for the hard cement and one missing shoe.

My girlfriend was so pissed she sold my ticket to the game. I wandered around the stadium aimlessly, broke and without hope when a few people invited me to join their tailgate. Throughout the game, I kept walking up to the gate, trying to catch a glimpse. My drunken charm (annoying badgering), eventually worked and with two minutes left to go the guard working the gate showed mercy on my soul. I ran down the stairs right past my soon to be ex girlfriend and rushed the field to celebrate the victory.

I really really hope that she bought the tickets

Because if you did and she sold your ticket that's just.. wow...

And what have we learned from all of this:

If you plan on binge drinking with your gf in a place that isn't your hometown, TAKE YOUR TICKET!

I Am Encouraged

It's just a handful, and I'm sure that for every brave soul here who had the fortitude to say, "Fuck the fuck out of you. It's Michigan football for me"--I know there are countless guys who probably can only read this blog when their (ball and chain) are out partying with their girlfriends for the 67th night in a row while said guy has to stay home to babysit the shit-zu (the faggy kind, replete with a ribbon in his hair).

Keep it up, gentlemen, and lady, you have your priorities straight and hopefully you will not surrender your power to someone who forces you to go shopping during the Super Bowl because "Everyone is watching the game, so the stores will be EMPTY!"

Or maybe some of us are

Or maybe some of us are actually married to someone that we'd like to actually spend some time with, rather than watch the 2007 Cap One bowl replay on BTN for the 4th time.

I don't think that anyone ever said anything to to this effect

Chi-town. I agree with you though that hey maybe your wife lets you watch all the football you watch but if football isn't on maybe do a bit of sacrificing yourself and do something for her. But I really don't think it's too much to ask for a few hours every Saturday (which my wife will understand).

My issue was more his hacky-stand-up-comic schtick about whipped men and his wife going for the 67th straight night, and the ensuing emasculation...just, fuck. The problem there has nothing to do with Michigan football, bro.

Amen.

I personally despise golf, but am I about to forbid anyone, let alone my gentleman lover, the right to enjoy it? No.
On the other hand, I had a terribly abusive alcoholic stepfather who completely monopolized an entire side of the house everytime his precious Denver Broncos or Phillies played and drunkenly berated anyone who dared walk by. Once again, the problem there had nothing to do with the NFL or MLB.

I remember being a kid at my older cousin's wedding when Michigan was playing the U of Miami. Just before the ceremony a bunch of screaming rang out from the kitchen where several of my uncles had snuck off to watch the end of the game. There where some pissed off women that day.

I planned my wedding

to be in the Summer, as opposed to the Fall, which lead to an engagement of ~1.5 years just so I wouldn't miss a Michigan game. That also lead me to not missing games because of showers/ wedding planning...

Now, I just have to pull this off for when the kid pops out!

My girlfriend's HS reunion is on the same day as UM-ND this year

It's a multi-day function and it's out-of-state. I told her that I'd attend so long as I could watch the game uninterrupted, no excuses.

My wife

reall does love M football. She screams at the TV as much as I do. She plans all fall activities around the games. If she has to go to something during a game, and she knows there won't be a TV there, she tells me I don't have to go.

That's why I married her.

Wedding during M game

A couple that I know had a fall wedding, and planned it for a bye week. But then the bye week was filled and they couldn't change their wedding date. Since they are very close friends (and huge M fans) I had to go. But I did take a radio to the ceremony, along with a poster board and marker, and as they were walking up the aisle after the ceremony, I wrote down the score for them to see. Got some dirty looks from some of the people in the church.

"Someone saying they haven't

"Someone saying they haven't watched College Gameday in years because they'd rather watch 'Thomas & Friends' with their kids on Saturday morning."

If you prefer Lee Corso's spewing to your children...don't have kids, everyone will be better off.

I detected a little bit of sarcasm from the OP, but none in the responses, so here we go:

Clearly, I love Michigan football. I write a blog about it, I write way too much here about it, I read tons about it. I generally don't make social plans for football saturdays that don't involve watching the game. But fuck, people, things happen. You're really not going to go to your freind's wedding so you can watch football? You're going to watch Corso and Herbstreit rather than spend time with your kid? Get a fucking grip.

Wow

you really need to relax, maybe take a day off, I think you are taking this whole blogging thing a bit too seriously...Its just people posting funny stories. Maybe you and your multiple thousands of points need to go hang out with your family a bit more, projecting a bit are we?

Some stories are funny, but

Some stories are funny, but the one's where people are breaking up with significant others, missing one of the most important days of their friend's life or otherwise letting football dictate life instead of the other way around, well...there's something wrong with that, so I get Chitown's point.

This is a comment I made elsewhere, but I might as well make it here too:

I try to make time every Saturday to watch some football too, and most of the time I succeed. But sometimes life calls, so I man-up and deal with it. I've missed some games due to studying, work, weddings (including my own), vacations and the birth of my child. I can't think of a single game I missed where I kicked myself afterwards. Now that we have Tivo, it's not even an issue.

Yeah I'm not going to go to my HS friends wedding

We haven't talked in forever and frankly I'd rather see MY better friends for homecoming. Maybe if they weren't such a shitty friend I'd go to their wedding but "fuck man" we haven't talked in years.

As to your other point yets I think that it is horrible that people wouldn't want to spend time with their kids to watch the bs pregame show. All I care about is the game.

Some things can be blown off for football. Others shouldn't be. Most of these stories were harmless and some dare I say even FUNNY.

I moved to the South

two years ago and now have a hard time making it back to Michigan. My wife got me tickets to the Florida/Georgia game for my birthday this year. This is probably one of the few games I would like to attend that Michigan is not involved in. It was a great gift but I am torn because Michigan plays Illinois that day. The Florida/Georgia game starts at 1pm and Michigan doesn't start until 3:30 so I should only miss the first half. As far as College Gameday goes I only watch it if I have time. My first child is on the way now and I can't imagine skipping time with him/her to listen to a Buckeye's take on college football or to watch Lee Corso put on funny hats. I can usually only manage to block off the schedule during the actual game time. I consider myself lucky and smart because I married a huge Michigan football fan. My wife gets just as stressed as I do if we are running late getting to a Television before kickoff off on Michigan gameday.

Fall Weddings

One of my college roommates is getting married opening weekend for UofM this year. He is sweet though because his bachelor party is on Friday and his wedding is on Sunday. Considerate so that no one has to miss the football game (though hangovers are likely).
