Stop jinxing 2014!

Submitted by yvgeni on

As a fatalist (and a soviet), you all are making me VERY uncomfortable with your 2014 bally hoo'ing.  It is well established that whenever anything good is happening, we all need to be even more dilligently looking around for the other shoe to fall.  It's the only civilized way to live.

So please, take your 2014 success like a soviet; ignore it and wait for the world to fall apart.

Thank you.

I half agree. The start to 2013 wasn't bad. In fact, there were a lot of positives early in the year. The end, not so much. And I do think we're talking a little bit too much about how great 2014 is, when we're only 2 weeks in. This could possibly lead to a jinx scenario. That being said, I will remain optimistic unless fate deems otherwise, and refuse to live in a state of fear or paranoia.

As one who doesn't believe in magic, neither the year nor any potential jinxing thereof seems an interesting topic of conversation. But at least the collective fanbase has stopped cutting itself about Borges, which is nice.

So are we going to look back on this thread in a few months and see a lesson on "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things"?
It was nice to see everyone so cheerful around here for a change.

we immigrated from USSR when I was young; moved shortly thereafter to ann arbor where I went K-12 and also to Michigan undergrad.  Not too unusual nowadays where you can't swing a sickle without hitting a Russian immigrant.

my father is the infamous (on this blog) "Igor!".  His story is probably more interesting since he never went to college in the US but transfered his crazy fandom from soccer to American football.

Off topic but on topic?
I watched Eastern Promises again the other day and it reminded me how terrifying Russians are. Did you wrestle bears as a child?

Edit: Does the video I embedded appear? For some reason they haven't been showing up ion my ipad. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong all sudden or just stupid apple problems.

Like it needs to be appeased. People started damning 2013 months before it ended and worse things kept happening to us. Maybe positivity breeds desirable results. We all know doing the other thing just makes us all miserable.

Not sure why people didn't realize this in the first place, but it's all about how we distribute our good luck.

We obviously used up all our "good karma" early in 2013.  For example, starting at the beginning of the year, we had an allotment of 100% and used probably 80% on basketball.  Seriously, 25% of it was probably used on Trey's shot against Kansas alone.

We just need to better allocate this mojo more equally.  Spread it out evenly.

Props to the OP, this is a much needed dose of perspective coupled with humor.  Thank you for that.  As for me, I have no problem with being happy that the end of 2013 is over, but there's a long way to go and I recall all of us being similarly happy about Michigan sports at this point last year.  Let us appreciate that the dickpunch of the football season is over and we have a chance to write a new story, but always with the knowledge that things may still, in fact, suck.

(That said, the fact that the football program actually acknowledged a clear problem and too defined steps to deal with it is an awfully nice change of perspectiove from thedoom and gloom of thinking that Hoke was comfortable enough with what happened last year to not make changes despite clear cracks in the foundation).

What does being a soviet have to do with thinking that talking about it being a good year has anything to do with 2014 actually being a good year?

WOOOOO! 2014!!!!
