You have to realize that this is a kids life we are talking about. if you throw him off the team with no help or support, forget football for a second, but it would be very unlikely that he would graduate as his entire support system in Ann Arbor would be stripped away.

Are you this sympathetic to players on opposing teams that get in trouble with the law multiple times, or just our players? This is a football program, not a halfway house. If Stonum can't fulfill his responsibilities as a player and student, he should not remain on the team. Right now it sounds like he's got work to do to get back on it.

I agree that he probably wouldn't graduate from U-M if he were kicked off the team, but not because he'd go through some soap opera-esque downward spiral - it'd be because he'd probably transfer (likely to a I-AA program where he could be eligible immediately).

I'm just wondering what your toughts would have been had he killed 4 people in either DUI? Going to college for FREE is a privilege not his right. The school can get him the help he needs with out him being a distraction to the team he has now failed twice. I'm all for him getting thru school and getting him help but if this had happened at OSU everyone on here would SLAM Tressel if he took this action. Stonum chose to drink and drive twice and he should oh I dont know may be suffer the consequences that we all would. He should be in jail not on a football field.

Enough with the "HE COULD HAVE HAVE KILLED PEOPLE!!!"  hysteria please.

Luckily, he didn't kill 4 people while stupidly drinking and driving; and if he did, I'm sure he'd be charged with those crimes as well because, you know, THEY ARE SEPARATE CRIMES.

We don't prosecute people for extra "might haves" in this country.  The risk of killing someone is already factored into the crime, and apart from judicial discretion, also factored into the punishment.

Hell, I personally believe that text messaging while driving is a far more dangerous problem than drinking & driving, yet only 31 states ban it.  http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/laws/cellphone_laws.html
3 reasons:  1.  It's a Sin® related offense.  2.  Texting hasn't been around as long or become as prevalent as alcohol.  3.  Even though it's dangerous, it temptingly convenient & no wants to admit they do it.

As far as Stonum goes; I'd say the combination of jail time, followed by monitored therapy/classes is a must.  I'd like to keep him involved with the program (practices, workouts, etc) so that he doesn't loose his support network.  Kicking him off the team forever and banishing him isn't like kicking someone out of your neighborhood book club,  this is his life. Football is completely interwoven with school, who he knows, where he lives, and a huge part of his future.  Should he see the field in 2011 under any circumstances?  No way in hell.

Should he be allowed the personal goal and honor of returning for the 2012 season?  Maybe.

drinking problem seriously? He's young and dumb.  I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished but let's keep AA and other such programs open to people with real problems and not dumb 20 year olds.

If you are on probation for a DUI and you get another one then you have a serious problem. Is he of the "I've been blacked out since the 90s" sort? No of course not. That doesn't mean he doesn't have a problem with alcohol.

He needs better friends too. If your friend is on probation and it looks like there's a remote possibility he will drive after having a drink, you need to sit his ass down and pay for the damn cab yourself. Ask him for the money when he's sober or just consider it doing a friend a solid. Obviously people shouldn't be driving drunk anyway but ESPECIALLY on probation like that.

Idiot. Point blank moron. Grow the f*ck up.

Since this is the first disciplinary case that will really hurt on Saturday afternoons, I would say that Hoke has to (and will) be pretty stern on Stonum.  Talk is cheap when it comes to excellence and character: you have to back it up with action, and I will be very surprised if Hoke did not suspend Stonum for at least a season (along with institutional assistance to deal with the problem).

I believe that Hoke should take the same action that Muschamp did. Stonum needs to be kicked off the team just like Jenkins was down in Gainesville. These kids have to be held accountable for their actions and I dont care how good of an athlete they are. Hoke must set the tone of how the program is going to be run. As much as I hate to say it, Stonum needs to go. I will be upset if Hoke doesnt dismiss him or at least hand out a severe punishment. I wish all the best to Stonum, but I think he deserves to be kicked off.

One DUI can happen to anyone.  Most use it as a wake-up call.  Two while on scholarship means you didn't learn from the first one not to put yourself in a compromised position behind the wheel.   Besides, does anyone really believe that he couldn't just walk up to someone, say, "hi, I'm Darryl Stonum and I need a ride home so I don't get another DUI" without getting a ride home?

It was correct to give him a second chance, but multiple "second chances" are too much like what happens in EL.  Eventually, they come back to bite you in the ass.  I think it's better for the team and for Stonum if he gets a fresh start elsewhere.

For the team, they can't afford to set a precedent of giving "second second chances."  For Stonum, anyone who gets their second DUI at 21 years old is at a major crossroads.  The quality of the rest of his life could be at stake here.  Do the DUI's become blips on the radar screen or do they become the beginning of a long, downward spiral?  He needs to take care of his legal obligations and go through some kind of assessment/therapy protocol before he plays football again.

Hopefully, he comes out the other end of the tunnel as someone who has "fixed" whatever his problem is.  I am guessing, though, that he needs to do it somewhere besides Ann Arbor.  I"m sure there are plenty of FCS schools where he could play immediately.  If he has one great season in the FCS he could still get a degree and a chance to play in the NFL.

Stonum gets what he needs and Brady Hoke sets a great precedent.  It sounds like both sides would win here.

I don't know, sounds like a recruiting violation to me /s @ overblown NCAA rules

amaze me....

If this was your son and his entire future was at stake what would you say or do?

So, Hoke needs to make an example of him to benefit who?  Hoke? Michigan? Stonum?

Whatever is done, it should be to do whatever is best for the future of that kid and all of the other kids invovled in the program and that is all.  Not for some dumb fan's pride.  Not for a standard.  Not for MICHIGAN.

For his own sake, he may need to be kicked off the team.  Maybe that kind of intervention is the only thing that will help him.  However, that's a conclusion that should take a much longer time to reach than the life of this topic to date.

How in the world is this kid so dumb. Already one offense, then violates conditions of parole and does jail time, now decides to drink and drive?
<br>
<br>Kick him off the team, give him some more jail time along with counseling. It's time for some tough love for this kid.

Maybe many of us have been behind the wheel at one point or another above the legal limit but I know if anyone on here has been busted for DUI I'm betting they haven't put themselves in a situation to do it again.

Maturity isn't always avoiding mistakes but it is about not repeating them. This is a sad story.

I was guessing DUI... I understand that at the time Darryl probably didn't think anything would happen, but due to the fact that this is his 2nd one Hoke will throw some harsh punishment that nobody will know about. Hoke should should guide him through the situation and find solutions so this doesn't happen again.

Every single one of us was an absolute raving moron from age 18 through age 20+X where X = that one year in your 20's when it dawned on you that in fact you are not indestructable and infallible.  If you combine that moronishness with something that sounds like an alcohol problem your in trouble.

Mr. Stonum needs help.  Professional and serious help and if this suspension gets him that help then its a godo thing for him in the long run.  If you think this is a dumb move by this kid your right but its also something that millions of Americans will deal with in there life time.  Everybody does dumb stuff its what you do afterwards that counts.  So now I wait to see what Mr. Stonum and Coach Hoke will be doing afterwards to correct this.
