Stevie Brown.. draftable?

Submitted by JC3 on

Don't know if Stevie Brown was close to being drafted or not (a few teams were talking to him). But apparently he's getting some looks according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Via twitter:

Deep Safety class > Berry could be perennial Pro Bowl. S. Brown on board.

Go Stevie!

He is not only a team player, but he's a hard worker and is pretty durable. Not to mention the most important facts- That he is a great person and a graduate of The University of Michigan.

I'd be more than happy for him if he makes it, but didn't the last two seasons show pretty conclusively that his talents were best served at OLB, NOT deep safety? I could see a Cato June type career for him, but I don't see deep safety as being anything other than a disaster for him and whatever team gives him a shot.

I don't know how well his pro day went, but he could potentially even be a late round steal, so yeah I'd say if he doesn't get drafted then he could catch on with a team in need of a power back

I'm actually more curious about Carlos Brown. I always regarded him as potentially one of those players who ends up as a better pro than college player. He's got to at least be able to make a practice squad somewhere.

Teams will be wary to pay him much in a contract, as he has some durability issues, but he's got PLENTY of talent to get camp invites. SOME team that needs a third down, three yard back will pick him up.

I think Stevie could be a good project S/LB for a deep team ala Ryan Mundy. Also, SB was a special teams stud, so he'll always have a home in the NFL.

Actually, yes he was - in the 9th round. As a special teams dynamo who occasionally got on the field for non-ST plays he still managed to make a name for himself. Now that the draft is shorter, I would guess that Stevie B won't get drafted, but I would be surprised to see him miss out on an NFL career. I would love to see him wind up on my favorite squad.

probably 5th round or later, because the college production never fully materialized, but he has all the athleticism it takes to be a decent backup or even starter in the right defense. Even if he doesn't pan out there, he still should be a useful piece on special teams, and is very unlikely to cause any off field issues.

I'd like to think he's draftable, and I certainly hope he sticks in the NFL. But I have serious doubts. Even if he does bulk up to, say, 230 lbs., he would still only be 6' tall. That's very undersized for a linebacker (you don't have to point out exceptions - I know they exist).

He can't play free safety.

He might be able to play a strong safety position, but he'd still be a liability in coverage, I think.

And I know he had some good moments as a gunner on the punt team, but he wasn't exactly a stud on special teams. I've been more impressed by the special teams coverage abilities of Darnell Hood, Zac Johnson, and maybe even Brandon Smith; I know the first two aren't NFL-caliber players, and Smith is a big question mark at this point, too.
