The Steve Watson Question

Submitted by MGolem on

This may have already been addressed so I apologize if that is the case. There has been some talk around these parts of Steve Watson not being offered a 5th year. Is it as likely or at least possible that he is moved back to TE to provide depth? He was fairly highly regarded coming out of High School at TE and could be a huge boost in terms of numbers. Thoughts?

he wasn't that highly regarded coming out of high school, but i don't see why we wouldn't offer him a fifth year.  would potentially depress morale if we didn't and could hurt with willingham.

for 2011. He'll be a RS senior. He did not see action and redshirted in 2007 and has seen action the last 3 years.

He will be in the DL lineup and could see action at TE.  The way things are fleshing out for Michigan on defense and at TE, it's not like the competition is going to get easier.

He's a senior and will be considered a team leader and vet.  So there's that.

Would love to see Steve snare some passes at TE. He's wearing Eric Kattus's number afterall.

We will likely need his scholarship for someone in this class.

I'm sure if we had room, we would keep all of the fifth years, but you have to weigh their contribution next year against the potential of one of the new players over the next 4 years.

Not exactly, if someone gets a fifth year it just means the scholarship opens up a year later. So you'd have to balance the extra year plus getting a scholarship player next year versus getting an equivalent scholarship player this year.

well didn't carr recruit him?  if so, i wouldn't presume that he won't fit into the old michigan style offense with hoke.

i slightly digress, but someone here with lots of mgopoints did, however, mention that gibbons won't be getting a renewed scholarship. has anyone heard this about gibbons?

Nothing ruthless about it.  When a kid takes a scholarship, the understanding is that it's a four-year commitment.  Fifth years are not guaranteed.  At the worst, he'll be able to go to school for free in the spring and summer, if need be.
