Sources: Stefon Diggs suffered a lacerated kidney vs. Penn State and appears likely to be out through at least the end of the regular season

It sounds like Diggs will be out for the rest of the season.  Hopefully he gets well soon and this doesn't affect his promising career, or more importantly his health and wellbeing.

Jesus. A lacerated kidney? What kind of impact force has to come into play for that to happen? Best wishes to him, hopefully he makes a full recovery.

We had a kid on our HS football squad who lost half a season due to a lacerated spleen.

Still not sure what the geometry would have to be to make that happen, since I picture the spleen being well underneath the ribs (unlike the kidneys).  I guess one of those floating ribs must have been wiggled a bit.  Like Diggs, he got blown up in the midsection while he was stretched out.

Ouch . . . .

Here's a link to a Baltimore Sun article that details what happened. I hope he gets well soon.

Diggs was injured early in the fourth quarter of the Terp's victory at Penn State, when he took a shot to the kidney area while diving and stretching out for the end zone after a catch.

Diggs was down on the field for an extended period and was tended to by Maryland’s athletic trainer before walking to the sideline.

While Diggs later returned to the game and nearly scored on the Terps’ next series, the wide receiver was in noticeable pain while walking to the postgame media area after the game.

But a quick Googling of this reveals that, thankfully, this should not be a career-ending injury for Diggs.  Sometimes surgery is necessary, but these seem to be fixable issues (albeit painful and obviously serious in the near term).  I hope he recovers well and am sorry to see him suffer this injury.

The bigger question, I suppose, is whether he comes back for his senior year.  Either way, all the best to Diggs.

Does this mean he might transfer to Michigan?  I hear we are still in on him...

In all seriousity, I can't believe he went back in to the game.  Don't they have coaches who look out for those types of things?

Ok, really serious.  I hope he recovers well and quickly.

Injuries that result in internal bleeding (without extreme mechanism of injury or other obvious injuries) are tough to find until the bleeding becomes extremely obvious (abdominal rigidity and intolerable pain). They are tricky to discover up until that point. Kidney lacerations that affect the color of one's urine are actually sort of a blessing in diguise becuase the problem is identified faster due to the strange/terrifying signs.

People asking how much force is needed to lacerate a kidney?

The non-scientific answer is generally a lot.

However, in football it is not uncommon to see impacts of 20-30g's and if that 20-30g's is directed at your mid-low back it'll definitely be enough to lacerate your kidney.

Thanks for providing this answer actually - I was curious when I saw the Sun article because it seemed like it would have to be one hell of blow to the lower back / abdomen (depending on the direction of the tackle) to do this, but this at least puts a number on it.

Hopefully, Diggs' recovery goes well and he is back out there in 2015.

Some may remember that Eric Davis suffered this injury in Game 4 of the 1990 World Series.  He stayed in a hospital in Oakland while the rest of the team came back to Cincinnati.

Diggs would've torn our secondary apart. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

God has turned his attention away from Iowa running backs and is now focusing on receivers who once considered Michigan but went elsewhere.

LeQuon Treadwell and Stefon Diggs should get together and go bowling.

OW OW OW OW OW.

If you're (morbidly) interested, this also happened to Paul Shirley, and is in his book.  And fortunately, this was all before he went crazy, so you can read in peace.

The injury completely sucks but the good news is Diggs should be able to play next season.

In early 2009, Kent State's star RB Eugene Jarvis was lost for the season with a lacerated kidney.  As I recall, the injury took place during a game and he played the rest of the game though looked sore.  Then after the game he saw blood in his urine and immediately reported it to the trainers.  He sat the rest of the season and came back in 2010.

I hope Diggs was this kind of recovery.  He is one of the most fun receivers I have seen in a long time.  I hope for his career and his well being he is fully healthy as soon as possible.

I remember that this happened to Jim McMahon in 1984, and he missed the final six games of the season. (In the story I read, he was quoted as saying that his urine looked like grape juice.) But he was back the next year to lead the Da Bears to the Super Bowl.

Best wishes to Diggs on his recovery ... and my sympathies. It hurts just to think about.

I was running down on the Kickoff team, and one of my teammates tackled the ball carrier from the opposite side I was running down the field.  He grabbed the guy around the waste and his momentum whipped both his feet around and one of them round house kicked me right in my side between my ribs and my hip.  Later I found out I only had a bruised kidney, but nothing will scare the hell out of you more then going to take a piss after the game and seeing nothing but red come out, instead of yellow.  I was off my feet for more than a week with this injury and missed the last 2 games of the year, as well.  Can't imagine his injury.  With internal bleeding, that is nothing to mess around with.
