Statistical Highlights after BGSU

Submitted by imdeng on

Things had to move somewhat after that dominant offensive performance. Including all of Sat games - here is how we stack nationally:

  • We are now the #2 rushing attack in country and #1 in BigTen (331 ypg), we are also #2 in total offense (563 ypg)
  • Our defense in terms of yards allowed is really bad - #93 in total defense (400 ypg), #105 in pass defense (265 ypg). However, consistent with the bend but don't break approach, we are middle of the pack in scoring defense  (#64) and pass efficiency defense (#55).
  • We are #1 in sacks allowed - yay for an actual, functioning O-line
  • Denard continues to be the #1 rusher (172 ypg) but is now #2 in total offense - Mallet overtook him last evening. Denard is #8 in all purpose runners and #18 in pass efficiency.

While I am glad that yesterday provided a national stage to put Mallett's gaudy numbers into perspective, I wouldn't blame him 100% for the outcome of that game. If you would have told Patrino that he would have multiple drives at the end of the game to put away Alabama at the very end of the game with the ball in #15's hands, he would be very pleased. Patrino makes his bed and he sleeps in it.

You and I must be on the same caffeine high this morning because I just spent the last hour compiling Offensive and Defensive stat leaders for the Big 10.

Obviously we got the O going on (#1 in: avg ypg & total rushing. #2 in scoring avg - 41ppg).  Howeva, going into the Big 10 season, our defense possesses the following statistical rank:

#11 in average yards allowed per game - 400

#11 in total passing yards allowed - 1059

#9 in total rushing yards allowed - 541

#10 in average scoring per game - 23ppg

Indiana passes well (avg 300ypg) but can't rush too well.  They are #7 in avg yards allowed per game but are decent defending the pass (#3 in the conference, allowing 484yds after 3 games).

Has anyone run the numbers on turnover stats? I am getting the impression (unfounded?) that the bend-dont-break D is producing a lot of turnovers even if it isnt getting real 3andout stops.

It seems like through 4 games we have more turnovers than through most of last season and I wonder if the zones combined with occasional line pressure aren't causing that.

Any thoughts?

Our special teams have been very poor across the board with the possible exception of kickoff coverage, which is not listed. In addition to being 1 of 5 on field goals:

105th in net punting

96th in punt returns

107th in kickoff returns
