Did I just not read this right or was pretty much every recruit listed on here not a "fit" for Michigan?
ohio state blogs will post literally anything
Did I just not read this right or was pretty much every recruit listed on here not a "fit" for Michigan?
Well, given that he previewed 23 kids and that Michigan typically only offers about a third of that number in-state, it would make sense that most of them wouldn't be targeted.
I think Michigan offered 12 in-state guys in the 2012 class, and the 2013 class is supposed to be down a little bit. I think a couple more guys will get offered, but probably not a dozen of them.
With Michigan taking less then 20 players (right now) in 2013, I think they will be very selective in Michigan and Ohio this year. Having a 5 star QB locked up should help offensive recruiting nationally and locally.
Agreed. There are always a couple surprise offers in-state, though, I think. Norfleet surprised some people, and so did Drake Johnson. It will be interesting to see who the surprises are in 2013.
Any predictions, Magnus, on which guys will be Blue? Sounds like Jourdan Lewis is the only lock-ish type, in terms of mutual interest. Maybe Shallman, Edwards, and Dillard.
Probably Lewis and Shallman, and maybe Dawson if he gets offered. I think Michigan would have to fight for Dillard if they go after him.
Magnus - Always love your page. It sounds as if you don't expect us to offer too many in-state players. Any chance you will do a breakdown of players from OH, PA, IA & IL that are on our radar? Not to apply too much pressure, but between now and Spring practice posts like yours are the only substantive discussions for those of us who need a steady diet of Michigan dialogue.
I probably won't do one for Iowa, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and such. I don't know those areas as well. Sorry.
I answered the guy's question and it's marked "redundant"?
I love it when people neg my posts just because it says "Magnus." Some of you must be racist against Northern Europeans.
I think people neg your posts because you are arrogant.
Whenver I actually think to neg you for going a bit overboard, I see Graham's face and just can't bring myself to do it.
Nice post. Interesting to see the breakdown.
It does seem like the state has a run of smallish RBs/slot receivers, which actually would have been more appealing to the last coaching staff than the current one. So if no RB is coming from the state, where will the recruit(s) likely come from?
Well, I think a lot of states have a bunch of smallish RBs/slot receivers. There are a lot of good football players in the country, but that's why you always hear "If only he were bigger..." The key to football recruiting is finding guys who are both fast AND big.
or Rod Smith's brother at running back. Those two might be the game changers needed.
Rod Smith's brother (Jaylon) is a linebacker.
Shallman has been offered as a RB. I expect Edwards will be too. Isaac seems like the main out of state target.
I think there's going to need to be some attrition at the RB position for Edwards to get offered (Hayes to WR, a guy transferring, etc.). We just took a guy who's somewhat like Edwards - Dennis Norfleet - and Fred Jackson basically said, "He's probably not an every-down back, but we'll throw him the ball and use him on special teams." These coaches want at least one big back in this class, and Edwards obviously doesn't fit that description.
Thanks Magnus. I appreciate the abstract version of these reports, since I rarely learn much from the longer versions.
Good stuff...something to look foreward to and hopefully some of these guys will explode this year and have terrific camps as well!
On a sidenote, I wonder what Braylon will say if his brother doesn't get offered by Hoke and co.
$10 says he can't say it without slurring his speech.
Have to say I certainly understand Carl Winslow's down vote. It angers me too when people like Magnus post free analysis using their own time and it's not up to my specifications. I have a good mind to go get my free analysis someplace else from now on.
Maybe Touch The Banner has better content for Carl and my free viewing pleasure.
He's just pissed at me because I'm too persistent about wanting to date his daughter.
Laura Winslow <<<<< Myra Monkhouse
Hopefully you are better at evaluating recruits than TGIF hotties.
I agree that Myra is hotter.
I bet Carl is even more pissed at me now.
I was just trying to turn this into a "Which Step-By-Step girl would you rather bone?" thread. I would find that infinitely more interesting than the Super Bowl.
1. Grown up Al (she be fine)
2. Suzanne Summers (two words: Thigh, Master)
3. The chick from My Two Dads (just to piss off Paul Reiser)
4. That stuck up wannabe model (not that hot and wouldn't work for it, and besides you live in fucking Wisconsin, stop acting like you are well-traveled and sophisticated when you are in reality almost as dumb as JT or that dude who lived in a van and beat the shit out of his wife in real life)
Al (Christine Lakin) did turn out to be pretty hot.
I probably would have picked Karen (Angela Watson) when I was younger, but by the time the show ended, Al had passed her up.
watch MSU pick up a bunch of kids UM doesn't offer and claim to have retaken the state.
Morris takes back the top spot in the state over Elmer
I think there's certainly a chance of that happening, although De La Salle doesn't have the players around Morris to help him look absolutely studly. That might be a hurdle for him to have to overcome.
Informative and honest as always...
Does Deveon Smith become RB priority #1? If so, can he become the breakout back we need?
Shallman was offered before Smith, so maybe not.
Wish there was a chance for Michigan to get Elmer back with ND replacing Kelly, but I get the impression it would take a PSU level scandal to cause him to switch. He seems like he'll go there no matter
Michigan made headway with Elmer before he committed to Notre Dame, but MSU was generally considered to be #2 with U of M #3.
Really nice analysis about all the kids for Michigan. Hoping we get Jourdan Lewis and keep that pipeline with Cass Tech cornerbacks. I am not from Michigan, but still always like to see where the top kids are going. I am from Indiana and there seems to be some decent kids in Indiana from the 2013 class. I actually am from Fort Wayne (the same hometown as where Jaylon Smith goes to school) so even though I am away at college right now I am hoping to make it to a Luers game sometime to see how good he really is. My brother says he seems to be the real deal and a must get. However, it is going to be tough to get Smith with his brother already at OSU. I haven't seen him play yet, but I am kind of surprised he is ranked so high on 247 just because of the competition he plays against. Luers is a 2A school so he is playing kids that aren't highly skilled. I actually had a lot of friends in high school that went to Luers and although they have produced some good talent (Deshaun Thomas in bball), they still don't always face the best competition. There conference does have some decent programs though such as 5A powerhouse Snider and 4A powerhouse Bishop Dwenger (Tyler Eifert and John Goodman went there) and then a team like South Side or North Side may be good once in awhile but overall the competition isn't that great, especially once they hit the playoffs and only face 2A schools. I just hope this recruiting cycle we hit Ohio hard again (losing out on Burrows and Marshall doesn't help this) but getting Thomas early on is huge and then we have to take advantage of Illinois. There are way too many talented kids in Illinois and the OL haul is so deep in Illinois. I was actually in Illinois over Thanksgiving visiting family and got to see the first half of the 5A Illinois state title game where Ty Issac was playing. The kid is a beast and I am so high on him. Honestly, think he is the most important recruit in this class. He rushed for over 500 yards that game and he has such an explosive first step and hits the hole hard. Running back is such a big concern that we have to get him or Deveon Smith....preferably both.
Brian shut it down and is working on it.
Can you explain why Dillard would be a fight, does he have a connection to Sparty?
I don't know of any personal connections (teammates, family members, etc.), but he has visited MSU several times and has openly talked about his respect for Dantonio and MSU's program.
Respect for Dantonio?
I knew Dantonio was going to be a problem the moment he responded to Hart's little brother comment. Buddy, you're a 50 year old man, talking back to a 22 year old student athlete. Why don't you put on your big boy pants and understand you're an adult.
I'll always give credit where credit is due, and he's a decent coach. He had a couple balls bounce his way a couple years back, and last year he did a pretty darn good job coaching that team, no lie. As a coach, he does pretty well for himself.
But as a person? Summer's Eve could offer him a contract to make him the posterboy for their douches, because Dantonio is a grade A douche. I can not respect that man for how he conducts his business.
Saban, Pete Carroll, and Urban Meyer fall into the same category. Amazing coaches, but I would never respect those snakes in the grass for how they conduct their business.
Pete Carroll reminds me a little bit of Dantonio, in the sense that they're hypocritical children. Quick Ex: Dantonio says it's important to build the program recruiting instate. As soon as we start beating him, he claims to recruit nationally. Ex: Carroll used to run up the score on everybody when he was at USC. Harbaugh is beating him by 4 touchdowns and goes for 2. Carroll comes up to him after the game, "What's your deal?" To which Harbaugh responded, "What's your deal?"
I respect Brady Hoke for how he conducts his business.
Dantonio is a tool, and I would probably say that even if I weren't a Michigan fan. But high school kids don't really seem to be latching onto that.
Very informative stuff.
By the way, Gerald Holmes just committed to Michigan State.
could get offered but down the line, maybe camp offers.
Cass Tech olineman and Dlineman have a shot....dt poet thomas has a shot........and a couple other instate oline if they are late bloomers.......
Dillard imo, if you think he can play for Michigan then go after him hard, go win the fight! Elmer going to nd early helps as it stops you from focusing on him for 6 months only to lose him to nd, but I thought it was obvious early to the staff he was a longshot at best.
I was checking out the Scout profile of Joshua Crim. He is an OT out of Lansing MI with interest in Sparty, Ohio and upper B1G but has NO interest in Michigan.
Is he projected to be good enough to earn an offer from Michigan?
I haven't seen any film on him, and I haven't heard any buzz about him . . . so I don't know.
Magnus, you're write was great and I enjoyed it but one piece was missing for me and that was your take on J. Lewis (the Cass Tech DB). I am wondering how you would compare him to the previous DB;'s out of Cass Tech (Mathis, Hollowell, Richardson, Cissoko etc). He seems to be of the same mold size wise (though a little bigger) I remember earlier last season you had said that Richardson was the best CB prospect to come out of cass tech to that point and I am wondering how you see Lewis stacking up?
I'm still undecided about Lewis. His highlight film is really bad and it's full of special teams/offensive highlights more than defensive highlights. He's a very good athlete, has good speed, etc. I want to see a little more of him before I formulate a strong opinion, but I would say he's around Richardson's level. I like him more than Hollowell, Mathis, and Cissoko.
I'd have to guess we won't be signing nearly the number of in-state players this year. Looks like the coaches will be getting more frequent flier miles this year! Edwards will be a bit of a dilemma for the coaches given his size and having Hayes and Norfleet in house already. It's interesting to see Antonio Bass's younger brother on the list. Makes me think about what might have been with the elder Bass. But, I don't see us offering him. Thanks for the great update!
I still think we'll end up getting a couple guys who don't have Michigan offers yet, but I expect Michigan to end up offering a couple fewer players. We offered 12 in 2012, and I figure 9-10 will get offers in 2013.
I hope and pray Poet Thomas proves you wrong and garners a scholly from Michigan.
I'm guessing he would have destroyed at the Sugar Bowl Rap Battle.
