The State Of Our Open Threads: After Wisconsin

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

Well, yesterday was....frustrating, though if you read the boards this morning, not entirely shocking.

What is clear, of course, not only from watching the game but from looking at the data here, is that our three-week vacation from adversity was at an end. We knew that was coming, of course, and our reaction to it produced some interesting results.

In the stretch from Rutgers to Maryland, there were only 341 fucks given in three game threads. Yesterday, we managed to give 452 fucks. In that same stretch before Wisconsin, we gave 162 shits, and yesterday alone, we gave 168 shits. It's a similar pattern with some other words, most notably "fire" and "suck" - both of those returned with a vengance that we actually haven't seen around here for some time.

Another notable event which occured in this study sometime during the fourth quarter yesterday is that we actually surpassed the 2016 total for "fuck", which was 3,515 - we currently stand at 3,521 with the Ohio State game yet to be played. We passed the 2016 total of "shit" several weeks ago - we are now at 1,313, whereas all of last year, we only gave 1,146 shits. Interestingly as well, we now stand at 666 instances of "damn", so we hit a very symbolic number just in time for Ohio State hate week.

One thing which actually skews the numbers a little bit this week is the return of a second half thread, which spurred participation to levels we haven't seen a few weeks. Whereas we had been struggling to get to around 1,500 posts for the last three week, we managed to rack up 2,840 for this game, making it the fourth largest thread after the Purdue, Indiana and MSU open threads.

OK, so what did stress look like this week?

It looks exactly like you would think. An early peak around the first Wisconsin TD, then a lull, then an escalation when the game seemed to spiral out of a control a bit, then at the end, a fair amount of people checking out. The giving of "shit" and "fuck" seems to trail the total amount of tracked language well, making this a "fuck"-driven game as many of them tend to be.

Overall efficiency stood at 2.58, which is actually more consistent with uncomfortable victories, but also has some alignment with anticipated defeat in the historic data, so if the latter is what you believed would happen, the data is consistent. That accounts for 1,100 instances across the 2,840 posts in two threads.

So, from a production standpoint, next week is simply gravy for some words - sometime in December, you'll get the 60-game history of "fuck" on MGoBlog plus a three-year check-in on the Harbaugh era of this data. Hopefully, the coaching staff never sees that last one, right?

I've complained a lot this season and questioned coaching and players..... However, this week i'm putting all that behind me and just wishing for a win against the team from the south. Momentum for next year starts saturday.
