The State Of Our Open Threads: After Miami (OH)

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

First, let me explain for those who were unaware - there would have been a thread like this for Notre Dame if two things had not happened last week. First, there would have needed to be no storm which knocked out power to 425,000 people. Second, I would have had to avoided being out myself, but alas, I was out until Monday at 9 PM or so. By then, between work and distraction, there was no time.

On Friday, however, did compile the data, so here is a brief summation - we did very well indeed. Against a total thread size (between first and second half) of 1,409 posts, we achieved an efficiency rating of 2.37, which means that 595 posts contained instances of tracked swearing. Of those 595 posts, 267 of them contained some form of "fuck" with calls for firing (mostly Hoke) being a distant second. Clearly, we had a high-percentage "fuck" game going there.

And now to yesterday's game -

I want to say this right out of the gate - one of the advantages in documenting the collective rage of a blog in this manner is that you start to see interesting things, and indeed, if some of the numbers are to be believed, we may as well have played ND again yesterday. Now, we were decided less angry on the whole - an efficiency of 3.44 against a thread size (again, between both halves) of 1,590 posts. This thread was actually BIGGER than the ND one, but a lot of people had something on their mind.

What was that? Well, we gave up a bit on "fuck" as a go-to strategy...

September 13th, 2014 might be remembered as a day where patience visibly began to wear thin on MGoBlog, even despite a win and the points for the Redhawks coming on a rahter quick series of untimely miscues. For the first time since I started doing this, the calls for someone to be fired (again, mainly Hoke, but with a smattering of Brandon too) topped all other tracked instances.

How prominent was "fire"? Of the 444 instances used, 197 of them involved  call for firing a coach or the AD. Now, never straying too far from our normal modus operandi, "fuck" was second in volume, but a distant second - 77 instances of "fuck", so when wanting someone fired was not working, we did fall back to our normal "fuck" specialty. Also notable, is that there is a decided upward trend for calls to put Morris in games, but more interestingly, there is a small but vocal school that is beginning to throw an "ass" in there on occasion, with 31 times being the most it has ever been used to date.

Next week, the Mood Chart will reappear so you can see the mood around here mapped out just like last year. As more data piles up, other charts will come into play as well, but this early in the season, the discussion format is a little better.

Actually, that number above is with those sorts of things omitted already. There were 42 specific instances of "tire fire" or uses of "fire" in a sense other than a call for someone losing their position. That also accounts for people who have the word in their signature line, which right now is a fair number of posters.

When we took a delay on 4th and one against a weak MAC team from about the 30. It was tough being at the game and hearing the crowd boo what was looking like a circus.

Hey all, I am a die hard Michigan from South Carolina and I am coming to Ann Arbor next weekend for the game with a good friend (and die hard ute fan). I want to make sure we pack all the experiences we can into our weekend. So a couple questions:

We really want to experience the famous Michigan tailgate (we are both in our late 30's). Would anyone be willing to let us stop by and visit your spot?

We will be spending the day on Friday in Ann Arbor. I have been told we need to eat at the Pizza House, The Brown Jug, and Mr. Spots. We are planning on checking out Schembechler Hall. Anything else that is a must do while we are there on Friday?

Any feedback is appreciated and thank you in advance! GO BLUE!!

I urge you to leave the tailgate early and arrive at Revelli Hall (~3/4 mile from the UofM Golf Course and <1/2 mile from the stadium) at least 45 minutes before the start of the game.  The UofM Marching Band gathers there, plays a few numbers, and then head to the stadium to different cadences.  It's a great game day experience and a wonderful way to psyched up for the game.

Next week will get interesting. Against a team that averages 57.5 pts/game in its first two games, our offense better not have TO issues again, or we could be in serious trouble.

Next week, IMO, will tell us who we are as a team.

Then again, it could just be another weird game. You know, like when we outgain the opposing team and lose 31-0? Or when we win 34-10 and feel like we lost?

I said it'll tell us who we are as a team. But then again, maybe we win 16-7 with all FGs and it confuses us even more.

Instead of chalking up the Notre Dame game to "weirdness" like a Coach Izzo Disciple. Is it a weird thought to think the yards are so close because Notre Dame went into conservative mode? They were up 3 touchdowns for over half the game. Their defense went into "bend don't break" and their offense ran the ball 31 times even though they could barely gain a yard. If we're even competitive in that game Golson throws the rock 50 times and its for well over 400 yards. There was nothing weird about it.

1st: 8/8
2nd: 15/9
3rd: 7/6
4th: 7/3

The second quarter is a bit skewed by the 2 minute offense and having no timeouts at the end of the half. Before that drive it was 10/8.

I also took out the final 2 drives of the 4th quarter for obvious reasons.

I guess you could argue that the nature of the playcalls was different, but I'm not going to comment on that without actually watching again. They definitely didn't shell up and run run run though.

I took out the drive (3 plays) when Zaire came in and the final kneel down. Those were generally clock killing plays, I'll agree with that, but they only took up 2:18. My larger point was that they didn't really go conservative until very late in the game.
I'm not saying I'm happy with the performance, but I think it's safe to say that it was a "weird" game.

Yes, that is exactly what I saw watching the ND game. The only thing that kept ND from gaining more yards, was the end zone. They didn't have to move the ball per se, just enough to keep the clock moving. Because our O wasn't going anywhere.

Thank you for putting this together, LSA. It's always one of my favorite posts. When you know we're going to win, but don't look impressive or improved doing so, Miami of Ohio. Apathy is the overwhelming feeling, "Fire Hoke". When you're getting curb stompd by a huge rival in the last game for 20-30 years, Notre Dame. Anger is the overwhelming feeling, "Fuck my Life". I expect "Fuck" and "Fire" to have a steady rise next weekend.
