The State Of Our Open Threads: After Indiana

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

Well, as you might guess, whereas our collective response to games which do not go well is rather rpredictable, so is our response to games where things seem to go relatively smoothly overall for Michigan. Indeed, we only gave 36 fucks in this game, as well as 21 shits and 24 damns - and when scanned for context, some of them even positive - across a mere 1,095 posts. By far, the smallest thread in a while and the second smallest overall (Appalachian State's thread was only 831 posts large).

At three-quarters of the way through the season, it might be a good time to show the actual year-to-date totals and averages actually:

All in all, 4,036 instances of tracked words with our old friend "fuck" being the clear leader, but due to events beyond our control of course, a decent mix of shits and and wanting to fire someone. Indeed, yesterday, someone even wanted to fire Kevin Wilson for some reason, possibly in jest. I counted it anyway because what the hell, right?

What is notable, and again it is largely the outcome and flow of the game here, is that this was our least efficient game when it came to using the tracked language. Here is that metric for the season so far:

After a season where we've been high strung, to say the least, this was a relaxing, civil affair in comparison. It was a pleasure to mod it actually - I have missed such times. The normalized values for major contributors shows you how Appalachian State we managed to be really:

Yeah, things could flare up at any moment in the next three games, but between a needed change in the AD and a relatively east trouncing of Indiana, we basically gave ourselves a needed break this weekend. You can see below how happy we were indeed:

So, if nothing else goes our way this year, we'll have Appalachian State AND Indiana...possibly Miami (OH) and Penn St. if there is another shift or two in the averages which comprise this chart.

Seriously, this open thread was like the most of the board took a vacation and was replaced with the dudes in this video, and I was wondering like Super Dave, "Where is my band?"

Yesterday, and Hoke made a great case for keeping his job. Hopefully Hackett isn't so short-sighted to fire him at the end of the year

I agree that we were clicking and doing a really nice job. I have been eternally promoting the possibility of one more year for Hoke.

But I'd caution anyone from overly optimistic projections on an evaluation of our development based on this game alone. It signals progress, perhaps, but that progress must be sustainable. In the same way that we should not make hasty judgments when disappointed/angry, we should not make hasty judgments when excited.

Really? Beating a 4th string QB whom we know can't complete a pass further than 10 yards and a terrible defense means we should give hoke another year? This team has looked bad against good teams, mediocre against mediocre teams, and good against bad teams. This game shouldnt move the needle anymore than the wins against App state and Miami. Great for the kids to get a win but Hoke and Co still need to go

1932...If you aren't being sarcastic then please go get your head examined. Hes building something alright. A terrible football program. He deserves to be fired immediately after the season. How are you ok with Michigan having more losses than wins in November and being a national laughing stock?

There's a famous saying in golf about swing changes "sometimes you have to get worse in order to get better" that's what this feels like. Are we struggling? Yes. But Hoke showed what he's capable of yesterday and we're getting better. He deserves and should receive at least one if not 2 more years at the helm

Oh so Michigan beating a depleted IU team shows what this team is capable of? Actually, you are right. This team is only capable of beating poor teams at home. ND has given up at least 1 td to every team they played except Michigan. But since Hoke can beat IU with a 4th string qb, at home, he certainly deserves 1-2 more years. Haha what a joke.

It's not as if Drake Johnson's name wasn't mentioned by Hoke before the season started as someone who would see regular playing time because of his work in practice, and yet he disappeared getting a few carries in the waning moments  of early games.

This kid actually shows burst, vision and cutting ability combining all the best elements of a solid runner. If his success yesterday was only based on Indiana's defensive shortcomings, at least it represented a step-up from what the regulars have produced. So, hopefully he doesn't gave to keep auditioning in practice before we get to see him play again. But who knows.

As this analysis is all about the things we say in the moment around here, it actually gave me a chuckle when I saw it last night, so no worries. I am sure it is something Hoosier fans are mumbling anyway right now. Actually, it might be the first non-Michigan firing called for - joke or not - in the nearly two seasons of doing this, if we choose to include "the mods" in the "Michigan" bucket by way of fan affiliation.

Our fan base is toxic. The pitchfor guys finally got their wish and got Brandon fired. Same guys who wanted Lloyd fired, then Rich Rod, then Brandon and Hoke.  Its only a matter of time before they set their sights on somebody else...

And with this team, I'll take a win no matter how ugly it is or if it is against a crappy team. And for Michigan's D, that crappy Indiana O was able to move it with ease at times and end up scoring 10 points.

I think the coaches made promises to our highly rated backs and when Drake got injured, it was easier to fulfill those promises. Now that Drake is healthy again and is running well, the coaches are in a bind again. Then again, Green being hurt makes it not as hard either.

there---Drake only got the chance to show what he could do when Hoke had no other choice. It certainly hints at the possibility that, with this staff, keeping 4- and 5-star players happy and/or not wanting to admit that they were wrong in their recruiting plays a part in coaching decisions regarding playing time.

If you get mad about digesting Indiana I don't know what to say to you. I think we're all high off of the DB canning - I'm still getting used to the new landscape.

Did not even drive to the Big House for a tailgate or two.

Then watched the game without touching a computer.  I was a nice way to watch the game with no f-bombs.

Lots of "Yes.......Go Blue".........though.

Between bringing Drake out after the year was already screwed and Borges dialing up that awesome 2 pt conversion play against K-State one game too late?

Just curious.
