Stafford Projected to be Worth $25M+ a Year
News article (probably written by his agent):
Derek Carr's $125M sets high bar for Matthew Stafford

Also picked up at ESPN (cringe): Matthew Stafford in line to become NFL's richest man

Note that Oakland was #6 in TO while Detroit was...21st.
Detroit was #30 in rushing, 3rd to last.
IF I OWNED THE LIONS - AND I DON'T BECAUSE I DON'T MAKE CARS
I'd "pass", go with Rudock and spend that $$ on a RB and some better OL.
Hey man Harrington had a lot of pressure on him. He was replacing future 2 time Super Bowl champion Charlie Batch.
....I think he meant the fish, pollock.
Go with Ruddock? I'll have what OP is having.
Rudddock.
with a historically bad defense. Stafford set the single season record for most 4th quarter comebacks. He carried the team on his back.
The intentional misspelling of rivals' names begins and ends being funny with Mork D'antoni.
Stafford is worth it. He's a top end QB. Watch what he does with an improved OL this year
Obviously I would take Brady over him. But Brady's not available. It doesn't matter what Brady is being paid by New England, the market is dictating what Stafford will get paid and the Lions need to hold onto him
It's not all about value. It's the quarterback. You need a good one to win. Who is available that is better? The answer is no one. Pay him.
There are 11 quarterbacks that make more than Brady. He's the only quarterback that has taken less than market value.
It's very admirable to take a pay cut, but that's easier to do when you have a front office that has proven time and time again that they will get the right guys (and when your wife is worth $400 million).
If Stafford were to take less money so they could sign more guys, he'd be an idiot because the Lions would probably just piss it away as per usual. Take what they'll pay you.
Dump him. He's not worth backup QB money.
This is ridiculous. He's durable, efficient, accurate, and he's not even 30 yet. He's consistently a top-10 QB in a league that has come to rely more and more on the position.
I certainly don't want to try to pay some other signal caller through free agency, and drafts are a continuous crapshoot that can send franchises into death spirals for years if they don't work out.
No, Stafford is the dude. And he should stay that way until he retires.
But there's a quality QB just hanging out in FA; Colin Kaepernick.
I'd throw 15 mill at Kaep and throw Stafford to the curb.
And that is why you're not an NFL GM. Kaepernick over Stafford? Put the pipe down.
It's not a simple Kaep > Stafford.
It's Kaep at 2-years $20 mil >>>>>>>>>>>>> Staffard at 5 years $125 mil
Thank god you don't make decisions for any NFL team.
I would take these QB's at 25 mill over Stafford at 10 mill:
Tannehill
Dalton
Alex Smith
Trevor Siemian
Brock Osweiler
Tyrod Taylor
You're joking right? This is one of the worst takes I've seen on here
Not joking at all.
The only way this Lions team can improve is if they get rid of Stafford.
I could rattle off 30-40 other QB's I'd take over Stafford. I'd take a couple college QB's over Stafford right now.
If anyone thinks the Lions are better off this season and in the future by paying a mediocre Stafford 25+ mil/year then they are the crazy ones.
Cut your losses now, make the playoffs with a different mediocre QB, and you'll have a greater chance of that mediocre QB becoming elite than you do to win anything with Stafford.
Teams don't generally improve by getting rid of a top 10 QB in the league.
I'm thankful you're not the Lions GM, you'd make Matt Millen look like a genius.
Would it not be worth it to rid the team of a contract that's going to handicap us for "x" number of years, by throwing a ton of money at a mediocre QB for no reason at all other than "that's what the current market is at".
Just because Oakland made a huge mistake doesn't mean the Lions need to follow suit.
Dump Stafford, sign Kaep, use the extra money elsewhere on the team, make the playoffs again and lose, then rinse and repeat until you find the next Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford, Jameis Winston, or Dak Prescott.
Well, calling Stafford mediocre is just downright wrong. He's a top 10 QB, pretty much any NFL expert would agree with that. Kaepernick is much worse than he is, as are guys like Brock Osweiler, Trevor Siemian, Tyrod Taylor, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Bradford. So I dunno what Stafford did to make you hate him so much, but you're saying you want to replace him with a vastly inferior QB, and this helps the Lions how?
1. I don't believe Stafford is a top ten QB. A reasonable Top QB list looks like this:
Brady
Rodgers
Ryan
Brees
Luck
Wilson
Prescott
Dalton
Palmer
Cousins
Carr
Mariota
Bradford
Tannehill
Rivers
Then Stafford is mixed in with Tyrod Taylor, Siemian, Flacco, Roethlisberger, Winston, Eli, Flacco, Bortles, Bridgewater, etc.
2. At the price Stafford is looking to get, how can anyone defend paying that kind of money to a mediocre QB?!
3. This helps the lions because now they can actually use the money elsewhere and become a better all around team.
1. I'd build my team around Mariota over Stafford 100/100 times and again on Sunday
2 and 3. I'd take Bradford and Tannehill at their contracts over Stafford at 25 mill/year for 5+ years.
4. Roethlisberger is down in the honorable mentions with Stafford.
Yeah that's far from reasonable. But you do you brah
