Stadium Announcer - where was he?

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
Anyone know why the Carl Grapintine (sp?) wasn't there and the stadium announcements were a replacement guy today? (Was it the basketball guy instead?).

Just on the radio right now someone asked and a band member called in and said he was sick today. Get well soon.

Bobb Vergiels is fine for Comerica Park and for Crisler Arena, but few if any men have the gravitas of the sonorous voice of Carl Grapertine.

Carl is a radio host in Chicago of a classical music station, so he's been practicing that silky baritone for years. It's always pretty impressive to me that he's been able to make the transition to a football PA announcer. I hope he gets better. I noticed immediately when he was gone. I love his voice.

I thought Bobb did a very good job today, minus the "Gordon Cameron" mistakes. When I heard him, I thought it would be FREE PIZAAAAAA-esque, but I was pleasantly surprised that he toned it down a bit. Certainly not Carl, but not the disaster that it could've been.

Get well soon Carl, Michigan Stadium isn't the same without you.

My information is that Carl was hospitalized, but is okay.  If I recall correctly, Carl missed another game or two in the past with a heart condition.

Carl, we miss you very much.  Get well soon.

Wow. I miss one game--and it's a record-setter!

Thanks for all the nice comments. I've been released from the hospital. Just a freak thing--and bad timing.

I'll  be in the usual spot for the Wisconsin game.
