spring training awards go to ezeh, cox, stonum, patterson for work done leading up to the game
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
spring training awards go to ezeh, cox, stonum, patterson for work done leading up to the game
you have exactly 11111 points.
Now we can all go on with our lives.
No, because I +1 him
you ruined it! It had to stay like that forever! Nooo!
-1 ( I want you to 2000 )
if someone could do one more, that way I'll be at 2000 and I will never post again.
Edit: Thanks, that did it.
Or get you at 2010 and give yourself one post a year.
I am sure we can neg him back down. That actually would be fun - keep him at the same points for as long as we can. My life is really exciting.
Should be a fun day, I wonder if Rich Rod will take time to talk to recruits during the game. I mean it could go a long way in guys like Dee Harts mom (aunt), Watkins thoughts. Just an interesting thought.
UM is doing kicking exercises... of which they don't show anything but the back of the kicker. thus no idea if they're making them. sweet.
Anyone else trying to get it for bigtennetwork and after you input everything it says theres an error?
Same here. I guess they don't want our $3.
they already got your $3 and are laughing at all the schmucks who paid and can't watch it.
you're choosing your country then state. sometimes when it auto fills it won't let you put in a state and that's what holds it back. i had that problem and it finally worked.
We are sorry your card could not be processed at this time. If you think this is an error please try again or visit our support page.
That is what it says, goodness gracious sakes alive.
partners with MGoBlueShop?
I'm watchin' now- had no problem signing in. Video quality pretty good- wish the game would start-
Re-entered, changed cards, used Apt instead of #. Worked, though it probably had nothing to do with anything I did except try again.
If it's like last year's scrimmage, the first part will be field goal kicking. I'm kind of glad I can't watch that.
Last yrs they had middle school kids kicking it though ( or so it seemed )
who was singing the national anthem? I missed who it was; sounded pretty good.
National anthem time. Erica Peterson and Ashley Carp (not sure if I got the name right) singing.
all of the kickers are hitting from 30-35. then they went to 40+ and things... changed.
Is George Morales getting any reps snapping? I can't even listen to the game because of WTKA
"intensive purposes" DRINK
hows the attendence looking? about the same as last year?
looks like a decent crowd despite the weather.
put it at 30k+
holding. caught a bad snap and ripped it down well to help make the kick happen.
Is everyone else just getting replays on the live online feed from WTKA?
Well, this is on their website:
"Sports Talk 1050 WTKA is your exclusive home radio home for the 2010 Michigan Football Spring Game. Join Ira Weintraub, Sam Webb, Steve Clarke and a superstar guest list on Saturday, April 17th from 11am-3pm live from Michigan Stadium."
What's with the replay?
But I assumed locals could listen to it live on the actual old-fashioned radio. Any locals not actually at the game trying the radio?
Yup. BTN is blocking all online feeds except their own.
the punting is god awful
It's Hagerup's job as soon as he gets on campus.
Gibbons went 1 for 2 from 47 yards. I'll take that.
Hopefully he is good. That is all.
starts the offense
Denard takes first snap...
Pocket presence! Denard stayed in the pocket until it collapsed and went right through one of the opened seams. really good move for 8 yds.
definitely looks improved. looks more comfortable, etc. wouldn't say he's heir apparent, especially with some throws thrown too far ahead of receivers, but he's definitely a viable weapon compared to last year.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! F'ing BTN.
I even got some speakers set up out on the back lanai cause I'm planting in the backyard. THIS SUCKS.
He looks good (Denard) still lets a couple get away from him. But overall much improved, that bootleg was beautiful.
scores on the rollout from 10 yds
1st team O vs. 1st team D. 10 yard TD Denard Robinson untouched!
Denard looked very accurate on the short passes, hopefully he'll do some downfield passing on his next series so we can see if he's progressed at that.
Is Denard facing the 1st or 2nd string defense?
Are the quarterbacks being tackled, or is it two-hand touch out there?
they keep switching what squads are up against each other. and it's damn near impossible to know for sure.
qbs are touch
Denard 3/4 on first drive. Only incompletion was a drop.
QBs are down when touched.
@mikerothstein: Forcier second team offense QB.
kidding. his offense started with an illegal motion and then rolled off a keeper for 8 yds. both qbs wearing red numbers = no tackle.
forcier also just made a bad choice to not throw one away and squeeze it into a tiny hole. no first downs for tate's offense. however he just punted about 40+ yds inside the 20.
TATE FORCIER IS THE ZOLTAN OF THE FUTURE
Love the updates. Thanks!
So WTKA isn't doing a live audio feed? Laaaame
Maybe Forcier won't transfer since he's now officially our best punter?
and gets yelled at. Though it was Shaw's drop on the screen.
So Demetrius Hart should commit to Michigan? :D
Devin in... and fumbles the fake handoff
and drops the ball immediately
Devin Gardner on Main St. Fumbles.
Gardner redeems himself. stands in the pocket. calmly delivers a 30 yd pass to mid field
Buddy at the game just texted me and thinks there are closer to 60k at the game...
Gardner with 2 3rd down completions.
Gardner was likely 'down' when pocket collapsed but makes a loft pass to Miller, who nearly dropped it. i think Gardner's best trait right now is his calm/poise. he looks comfortable when making throws rather than panicking for what his best option is. i definitely see the vince young comparisons. he looks tall/big...
gardner almost got hopkins killed care of jt floyd
to cap the 3rd (?) team offense
for new setup. Forcier to Odoms for 25 yds
Was that drive 3rd team O vs. 1st team D? If so, ugh...
and a lot of the catches would never have been made in full contact/KILL football. bobbles that would have been blasted out of reach, etc.
forcier trying to fit a ball in a pinhole again
I meant Gardner's drive.
forcier rolls out and throws a ball up, almost picked off on the way through and makes it to the receiver for 15 yds. right through the defenders hands to the intended receiver some 5 yds behind him.
roundtree on a 'reverse'ish run for 5
Thanks for the info. I find it humorous every one of your updates has been negged for no apparent reason.
as he was dragged down he throws a pick.
true freshman mistake.
DRob to Roundtree for 97 yd touchdown. GREAT throw by robinson... great pocket presence.
Sounds like the defense is doing much better than they did last year.
Edit: except for the 97 yard TD they just gave up.
the 1's have only given up a field goal on a devin gardner drive
edit: then that
Not tackled at the 1.
i thought it was going to happen again
I don't know who to root for... Every update typed here i'm instantly excited and then quickly worried about why that good feat was accomplished. Geez, i'm a mess.
This sucks i can't get it online on wtka. Bogus. In milwaukee so can't exactly get 1050 on the good old transistor radio (though i foolishly tried for the hell of it). GAY
Can't wait to watch it tonight, until something somehow messes that up.
Thanks to all for the updates.
I think you could say Robinson looks better throwing the ball so far...
That was a beautiful throw by Denard, still wondering if he can throw the streak with touch and accuracy, but his on the line throws have looked beautiful. Wow this kid looks pretty exciting Denard is special.
Why honestly would you guys neg Geaux for giving a play by play for everyone that cannot watch? Wow...just wow
nothing but praise for Denard and even blames the RB for dropping a pass while DRob is getting yelled at. Then nothing but negative remarks about Tate. Just a hunch....
you would know that DRob is one of the few people who deserves strong praise. i was his biggest critic last year and am currently stunned about how night and day this has been. the RB did drop the pass. DRob was being yelled at for not throwing the ball hard enough, not that it was a bad pass. commentators said the exact same thing.
and tate has played relatively awful.
Relatively awful to last year and/or relatively awful to Denard?
he has regressed a little. he's making bad choices in a scrimmage, which sets off sirens in my head. he's seen the most drives end without points/field progress as well. he's not awful compared to Denard per se. DRob is just playing like a completely different person.
definately looks like a starter so far, much more patient and composed
Denard is the weapon of choice so far.
to avoid the safety
Wow perfect throw by Denard. Hit roundtree perfectly in stride. Shoelace looking good so far.
amidst 3-4 defenders. he has confidence in his arm, that's for sure.
forcier to gallon again
they've really stopped doing squads/teams in terms of 1st line, etc. and are just throwing people in wherever. miller is on the same line as tate, etc.
I'm basically paying $3.00 for the archived game so I can watch it later. I thought I learned my lesson from basketball season.
it's not bad on mine... is your feed cutting out and stuff?
Yeah, my feed is fine, too. Clicked on the HD button and it's still streaming great
And we won!
forcier just scrambled horizontally for 20 yds to evade defenders and then dumps the ball off for 30 yd gain.
to watch the replay tonight on BTN. It is sad that I'm so excited for a spring football scrimmage.
him and hopkins have been the dominant backs.
1st defensive group a little iffy
Cox busts through the hole for a touchdown!
thats what she said
man thomas gordon looks HUGE. banks has made some nice plays. yes i succumbed to Big Brother and paid the 3 dollars
the refs have been outstanding. not one bad call yet. kudos to todd geerlings and the crew
3$ got me replays. Guess not. But the feed quality itself is pretty good.
Tonight at 8:00 PM.
I wonder if they'll switch Denard and Tate so both get turns with the 1's. It would be nice to know if Denard looks better just because he gets to go against the 2nd string D.
DRob scrambles through on an option. great run.
for those keeping score at home, i would say he looks the most comfortable
based on this scrimmage and all discussions thrown out there, it actually looks like forcier has regressed
Has anyone elses feed froze?
I got a "Page Expired" message and had to re-login to get the stream back.
demens with a nice tackle. hes made a few of those so far
D-Line = good.
outside of that... could be better
Struggling on the outside stuff and the pass.
No news there.
The O's gonna have to be productive with the ball this year. 3-and-out's will be fatal.
Both Tate and Denard have had reps with the 1's. Denard just had a run that would've been a TD without the touch rules.
Just a bit of coincidence - UConn is playing their spring game now also
for the td to Roundtree as the o-line keeps the pocket stable
Denard and Roundtree the most impressive so far?
they are creating an expectation for other players that aren't being met. DRob is playing so well that forcier's play looks poor, etc.
RR might be forcing them to stay in the pocket. that seems a weird thing to say but it feels like there might be a focus on getting the qbs to take their time and not rush rollouts/throws. i don't think they're going to change the playbook... it just looks like a practice element.
the 1's on D.
Another TD pass by Shoelace. His play is night and day from last year. He's really coming on now.
Robinson & Roundtree
man odoms drops a sure td. nice touch by gardner
How has Taylor Lewan looked?
i watched him exclusively a few plays. he actually looks like long in a lot of ways other than just his play, just not quite as big yet. he got a few good blocks downfield. i saw him take out a linebacker on one sweep (possibly mouton?). he was in a ton. even when the scrub line was in, he still anchored the LT spot. i'd say the buzz about his progress is right on at this point
jeeeeeez. defense permeated and jumped the play and forcier ends up making a bullshit pitch 8 yards back nowhere near the back that looked god awful. awful.
It's fucking great to hear that Denard is looking great out there. Can't wait to watch this tonight!
having heard all the chatter about Robinson and Forcier in practice and being skeptical...
i can't believe i'm saying this but...
Denard Robinson is our starter
The rumblings have been there but there is nothing like seeing it. We have at least two QBs
more as "wow, he's not as bad" and less the truth, which is that he's doing everything forcier is but with more speed and poise. on a 3rd and 20 i would still want forcier in but DRob could very well be the starter
@mikerothstein: Forcier fumbles – he's going against the second team D now, too. He has not looked too good today.
Could the injury be having an effect on Forcier's play?
the only thing he's doing well is his mobility. he's not making poor play, he's making poor choices. the offense just looks 10x more forced when he's out there.
The better question:
Could the jury be having an effect on Forcier's play?
you are looking for discussion on the MSU spring game. Sorry, wrong site.
gardner is truly the qb of the future. he's a beast. he already looks 2x better than DRob did all of last season.
annnnnd Cox fumbles. fml. RVB with the recovery
the D forced a fumble and IMMD :)
who bet the over?
Who's been playing in the defensive backfield? Vlad, Cam Gordon, Turner, Floyd, etc... Any of them do anything that stands out?
the 3rd string qb of my heart
for those keeping score in the annual "how does every Michigan qb who's ever played stack up" game
anyone else notice him/think he is doing well? to me when i watch him he looks really good, fast great feet. he has done a great job today at left tackle
The only thing certain that can be taken from this is that Tate is currently the best punter on the team.
rain starting to fall on the big house
i would actually put him in before i burned gardner's RS if QB APOCALYPSE occurred. he has good mobility and touch.
btw who's number 90 on defense. he's good.
and the btn is talking about "rocking wrangler jeans"
oneil swanson is good
edit: and then kennedy fumbles. i'm not allowed to live blog during the season.
Do you mean Lalota?
lined up on the left side (defense's left, on tv was right). he was breaking through the line every play. and is fucking HUGE.
When Jack Kennedy rolls out, he prefers going back and to the left.
TOP for 3rd string offense solid. defense stops them but kennedy looked good.
So, neg away if you want, but if Denard is named the starter. over/under a week until Tate decides to transfer?
why even bring that up like it's a guarantee he would? i get the family has done that consistently but c'mon dude... that's just bullshit to throw out for no reason.
Forcier's father has mentioned previously how transferring hasn't worked well for his family in the past. Jason didn't start at Stanford, and Chris was the backup at Furman last year.
Delaware State lost two games when they played @ the Big House. they lost to UM and had to forfeit their other scheduled game.
Jack Kennedy also ran for 6 yards in that game
His only PT of the year
The Coner was 3/3.
What a great game.
it was just something mentioned on BTN. im wondering how that worked in terms of their schedule having "two losses"
Other team was North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCATSU?). I actually applied for a job there and was planning to bring up the connection if I got an interview but it never got that far.
I'm very excited that we have the guy that the other team thinks "Oh shit!" when he tucks the ball to run. Denard is the man!
Robinson, Odoms, Roundtree, Hopkins
DRob to Odoms for a TD (Red Zone drill)
Has Hopkins trucked anybody yet?
Kovacs met him in a hole and got put down. Kovacs wrapped up and brought him down though.
MVP Jack Kennedy.
How did he get this good in 4 or 5 months?
I hope it's not cause of our D. (Like when we made the 3rd string converted running back Purdue QB look like an All American in '08.)
Banish those negative thoughts. Banish those negative thoughts.
I think a proper baseline for comparison is Tate. If he looks as good or better, that should be pretty telling of the strides he's made.
They still have time to improve, nothing is set in stone. Let's not forget that.
maybe we're not screwed there. i feel like using !!!!s to stress this point
maybe we're not screwed there!!!!
Gibbons? How far?
45ish... i don't know if it was truly that long but it was a ways out
Do you know who is doing the snapping on FGs/Punts so far?
Gardner marches it in on 3 straight qb scrambles.
DRob to TRob. would have been reviewed for TD IRL but at the half yard mark. Shaw takes it in.
I feel okay about the offense; we'll score some points. But how would you assess the D? That's going to determine how the team does.
I think Lewan has taken every rep at left tackle today with the 1's, 2's, and 3's. I like it. Maximize the reps.
the tight ends have done a real nice job. all three of them have made plays and done a nice job all over today
what was the final breakdown?
DRob with 4? Gardner with 2? Forcier 1?
i don't think Denard's offense went 4 and out the entire game... it's going to be AMAZING to watch opponents have to go through what we did against PSU/Illinois. schadenfreude at its best.
his best throw of the day. perhaps just having an off day after all.
the commentators though... haha
"great throw. tough across the body to a guy going in the opposite direction. not an advised throw but..."
good defensive coverage on the 2 point conversion
47-39 Blue over Maize
Geaux_Blue-- can you give some of your thoughts on how the Defense played?
there weren't any blown tackles that i saw. when the secondary got burned it got burned on a great pass/good qb touch. d-line permeated to get qb pressure. overall i think the d-line is possibly better on run coverage than they were last year. i found myself surprised by guys on the 3rd line defense.
as for the secondary... it's as reported. basically we're going to have to hope the d-line can get enough pressure that the opposing qbs won't be able to spot the 3-5 yard gap their receiver has on the cb/safety in question. floyd and somebody else had really good hits during the game.
i guess the one thing i can safely say is i didn't say "ohhhhh shit" - what's more, i think our defense will be better against pro-style teams than spread teams. RR had DRob playing more spread heavy plays that involve more qb draws and options, etc. part of why Forcier may have struggled is because the defense was able to put more pressure on him, especially when he was under center. they had problems defending DRob, but that's probably 80% Denard, 20% poor defense.
i hope this is helpful - it's just my observations. if there's anything in particular you're wondering i'd be happy to answer
As for the back 5 looking not amazing - remember who we have coming in this fall as recruits, a lot of highly touted kids. Between MRob and Furman at the Spur/Bandit spots or Cullen Christian and Dorsey at CB, one of more of those kids might be starting either at the very beginning or a month into the season. Those are all highly sought after and physically prepared kids.
I'm not saying they all come in and start, but if you take the worst person from that back 5 and replace it with the most prepared of the kids coming in, I bet the secondary gets better. It will also be much deeper in the event of an injury, and much more competitive at practice. If there's one area (based on our current roster and the make-up of our recruiting class) where freshman can contribute this year, it's the secondary, and none of those guys are here yet.
appreciates the attendance, for being "All In" - team gathers on the sideline to do Hail to the Victors
BTN, of course, just talks over it so people who obviously would be more interested in hearing what the coach has to say, etc... cannot
Now I wait for 5 hours...then I wait until mid July for NCAAF 11
Demo coming in June though. I know it's not nearly as much to look forward to but I still can't wait.
Did the D get any picks? I remember reading about a few fumbles, but not interceptions.
Obi picked off DG, I believe
i think that could be an incredible YouTube series called "Pancakes with Lewan" where i sit down and eat breakfast with Lewan while discussing the week in review. Like Michigan Replay... only with bacon
according to my records (starts poking at the air as if he's hitting an invisible calculator), the only loss M has in any sport since Brandon took over is the Miami hockey loss and the Purdue baseball Friday loss.
score another for Dave Brandon.
DRob = Night and Day.
And clearly looks to be the starter.
Does denard look to be the starter because he has progressed so much of where forcier was last season, or forcier has regressed?
i think Robinson had more poise and decided to take off (or try to) when the throw required was too small of a window. forcier keeps trying to fit it in. led to 2-3 near picks. i would not be surprised if RR put both guys into the backfield and had Denard take handoffs, throw or go out for passes. it would require defenses to key in on two different people and make it a very viable threat of who's going where to do what.
again, forcier may have had an off day. all i'm saying is DRob made GREAT reads with little to no DONTDOTHATOMG moments. hell, the only time i saw RR get on him was when he lofted a pass (on target) rather than throw it. also he seemed to be able to whip the ball with ease where forcier actually looked like he had to push it to make the ball have some zip. once it looked like he threw his arm out bc he had to muscle it to make it get there in time.
The having confidence taking off instead of forcing it thing should also tip in DRob's favor considering he's a WAY bigger threat when he does take off than Forcier. Don't get me wrong, Tate can scramble pretty nicely when need be, but Denard in the open field = scary.
For those who watched the game (I'm waiting until 8pm), how has our defensive formation looked? Different? Or similar to what we saw last year?
Did our offense stretch the field? Were the corners challenged? Did the LBs fill gaps, or read the plays better or worse than last year?
Thanks for the info. Finishing middle of the pack would be a great step forward for the defense and I would be more than pleased if that was true. Some MgoBlogers have mentioned that the D has looked decent against the run, including other reports I have read from practice it seemed as though this is a theme.
Should I PANIC that the Oline may not be running on all cylinders or trust that the LB is improved?
Is that they are experienced talent can only get you so far. I'm sorry but when you said "If Gerg can't make it work this year, RR will need to look for another coordinator, because we definitely have the talent to play better on D." I lold especially with a Lot of key guts not playing (woolfolk and Martin) and no freshman that could EE.
I would give gerg at least another year if rr gets one
full disclosure: i'm someone who has to read Brian's graphs and explanations to develop my understanding of zones and reads, etc. visually, the defense didn't look much different. the line looked improved but in terms of how it LOOKED, as in "does it visually look much different than 4-3 etc" it seemed similar. which means guys arent wandering around lost and are making coverage, which is good.
offense tried to stretch the field at times with limited success. Defense did a great job of sniffing out bubble screens and options, most notably during a no-gainer where the guy was swallowed alive and on forcier's fumble (TAKE THE SACK OR THROW IT AWAY).
my biggest concern going in was the line because of the loss of graham. in my opinion we're "fine"
Again, thanks. See above. Also, being "fine" on defense should allow everyone to breathe easier. A middle of the road defense allows us to win games against BGSU, Uconn, UMass, Purdue, Illi, and a great chance at ND, and MSU.
Did denard make any passes down field that made you trust that ability?
several of them. the 97 yarder was 20+ yards down the field when he threw it. he also had a couple 20-30 yard throws. i don't know if he is the guy to have throw the hail mary per se but he made throws consistent with the ones he made against Iowa (ignoring that game's awful INT pass) if not better
I know I'm rehashing 50% of the comments, but Denard really looked much improved. Overall, he looked like a play-maker. He looked comfortable, composed, and and far more mature than last fall. Perhaps this shouldn't be a surprise, but it was surprising to witness. Tate looked much like he did last year. He didn't look nearly as comfortable as I would have imagined, which is a bit concerning. Of course this is just spring and things will change by the fall, but as it stood today, I would not be surprised (indeed, I would expect) Denard to be our starter.
The offense looked decent as a whole. Cox, Toussaint, and Hopkins all looked promising. Roundtree looked great too. It was tough for me to judge the defense, other than their ability to play well against the run and put pressure on Tate.
We'll have our problems in the fall, but I think overall we'll be a much better team than last year.
Were we able to successfully run the zone read?
There were a couple of sloppy exchanges (with DG and Tate in at QB), and the tailback play was unspectacular, in general, but the zone read looked pretty smooth for the most part. The most encouraging thing was Denard's seeming comfort running it, especially with him not having the green light to run it at all last season. He seemed to make the right decisions for the most part and his exchanges were smooth.
likely was the reason DRob looked so good
Not only did we run the zone read fairly well (though I often can't tell if the right decision is made), but several times I had no idea who had the ball and even a couple of times followed the play only to realize that I was looking in the wrong direction. I don't recall that ever happening last year (which really stuck out at me watching Illinois since Juice disguised the direction of the play very well). If that continues (and it happened with both main QBs, though I think more with DRob), that alone should improve the offense dramatically.
How did Shoelace do running the read-option play?
Overall, I'm not sure if I was disappointed or encouraged by what I saw. Denard is worlds better than last year and *based on today only* looks like he should, by far, be the starter next year. DG had flashes of athleticism but definitely isn't ready. Tate looked a lot worse than I thought and it was disappointing to see him have such an off day.
My biggest concern was that we didn't show much option at all. The only pitch play was a disastrous fumble on the pitch by Tate, but Denard did well on a few run-reads - also, his pocket presence was fantastic and the OL bought him enough time to go through his reads.
The special teams were horrible outside of a few good kicks, but Hagerup isn't here yet so I'm sure the punting part of that equation will be much better this fall.
The defense didn't stand out as being great or awful - they had a lot of good stops but got burned several times, most notably by Denard. Overall though, decent day for them as well. The linemen on both sides had their moments, but I'd say the DL played slightly better.
If I had to make a win prediction right now (and please remember I'm basing this on what I've seen on ONE day that probably isn't terribly significant), I'd say 6-7 with a cap of 8. Unfortunately, I feel like we just didn't look SHARP today, although several players look like they're vastly improved and the defense didn't get toyed with the way it did in last year's spring game.
That said, the coaches weren't using the whole playbook of course, so we'll see a clearer picture come August.
the Denard we all saw running the offense last year is gone. he showed tremendous touch on some seam routes, ran the option excellently a few times and didn't come close to turning it over. he's your spring game MVP & most improved by 10 miles
Just got back from the game, and while you seem to have all gotten the blow by blow pretty well (great job Geaux_Blue!) I took some notes at the game on the whole experience, and here's what I thought. (With the caveat that it was one afternoon in one of the least important Spring Practices with a whole Fall to go).
First, attendance was lower, but the weather was BAD. I saw snowflakes walking to the Stadium.
I looked all through the M parking lot prior to the Alumni Game (which actually had an exciting end) for an MGoTailgate, and even walked around the Stadium at the beginning to see if I could find any Brian like substances, but nada. I mean, they were there, I'm sure, but nowhere I could find. (Might have to really PLAN one next year that doesn't involve Brian being a host, or maybe an August MGoGetTogether at some bar in town...maybe the weekend before the first game, for those that don't want to be COMPLETELY anonymous).
As I said earlier, Musical Theater National Anthem singers - very cute.
Kick game, atrocious. Punting game, worse. As was said, when Tate has your best punt...things to fix in the Fall.
Devin might be the best pure QB we have, but his lack of playbook comfort (he hesitates out there on plays at times), and his freshman-itis will probably keep him off the field, and maybe redshirting. But he has the tools, is big, quick, and probably the best arm on the team. He keeps it together, he WILL be good. I'm not sure if he doesn't keep progressing, that he might not be the emergency back-up...left on the bench to redshirt even if spot duty comes up, but if there's a season ending injury, he might take over. If he has a good Fall.
I was one of the ones who thought Denard shouldn't get in at QB barring emergency at all last year, he was so unpolished, and definitely in Brian's camp of I'll believe it when I see it re: the Spring reports. But Denard looked leaps and bounds better...and if they were to play tomorrow, I'd say he's your starter. Better decisions, ran more plays, threw the ball better, and really RAN the ball (not ran one running play). We're a world away from deciding, but Denard looked to majorly improved...and Tate looked about the same. He didn't look worse. He just still looked like a freshman (which technically, he is).
The QB play might be a little tainted by the fact that there were too many dropped passes...but then, probably too many injuries at the Receiver position too.
As was said, no RB really stood out over the others. Though Hopkins is a truck.
In the feel good world, they said $120,000 was raised for Mott's. They got my $20.
Am I the only one that felt the offense moved the ball at will last year?
By comparison, the defense looked like world beaters this year.
I love Robinson, Gallon, and Roundtree.
the offense as promised was totally vanilla. That absolutely favors Denard over Tate who needs more pass packages and protection to do really well in this environment. Also: even if he's no better than last Fall, the defense got ripped apart in the previous Spring Game. They were a far more worthy opponent this time out.
have only been reading this thread (haven't watched it yet)... can anyone comment on how this game went in relation to recruiting. we had a number of stellar recruits there (or were at least planning to). any insight as to how the game turned out and how it may have benefited, or hurt, our recruiting of those recruits in attendance?... recruit. (sorry just had to say it for the thirtieth time)... recruit. just curious, and thank you MGoNation!!!!
That cannot be Denard Robinson. Denard completed more passes to the defense last year than to his own teammates. That guy out there today with the dreads and the red number could compete for trophies. The QB position hasn't been this stacked since Brady/Henson.
Gardner looked like a freshman. I'll say this--he is big. With his big loping strides it doesn't look like he is moving that fast, but those big legs gobble up yardage quick. Every time he throws I'm thinking it could be a pick six though. Think Denard Robinson last year and be patient.
The defense was definitely more equipped to slow down Tate than Denard today---but they didn't do a particularly good job of that either. Aside from one bad drive with a lousy pitch and loaf of bread carrying style Tate looked pretty good too. Another year of X-box football. This year they're going to win more of them than they lose.
In a Vincent Smith free world Cox is my favorite RB. Shifty he is. Hopkins looks like a nice blunt battering ram as well. Roundtree my favorite WR.
Besides the absence of Woolfolk & Martin, and the basic question of the defense looking bad when it may be the offense playing well, or vice versa, I wonder if not being able to tackle the QB makes it difficult for the D to fully go after other tackles. For those of you who know (i.e., players, coaches and ex-players), wouldn't it be a bit tricky to turn the full-gauge attack off and on while still trying to learn the defense and read the offense?
He had a couple good routes/catches. One nice jump ball thrown by Devin to him but it was well defended by Rogers (I think). I am still worried about our secondary after today. Some breakdowns after some scrambling. Kovacs also provided himself as a crumbling road block to a Minor Raging Hopkins two plays in a row, which was entertaining.
