Spring Game Mock Draft: Your top-10

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

So, now that is has officially been confirmed that there will be a spring game for the first time since 2001 and it includes a draft, time to over-analyze and crunch.

2015 Spring Game Mock Draft -- my top-10

  1. Jabrill Peppers, S
  2. Desmond Morgan, LB
  3. Jourdan Lewis, CB
  4. Mason Cole, OT
  5. Derrick Green, RB
  6. Taco Charlton, DE
  7. De'Veon Smith, RB
  8. Amara Darboh, WR
  9. Blake Countess, CB
  10. Joe Bolden, LB

Cannot wait to see who drafts what QB and when. If it were me, I would go with the apparent hot hand in Malzone.

Picks would vary a great deal depending on what your opponent is doing.

Normally I'd say you take your QB first, but here it doesn't sound like we have a stand-out, so taking a QB before your opponent does is probably not much of an adavantage here (unlike picking Luck in 2010). I think that's true for RB and WR too on this team. Beliving that your O lives and dies by its OL, and your D by its middle, mine would look something like this (factoring in that it sounds like we have one stand-out TE):

(1) Cole, OT.

(2) Peppers, S (or Lewis, CB, if Peppers is gone).

(3) Butt, TE.

(4) Morgan, LB.

(5) Kugler, C (assuming, as I suspect, he's the only decent C we have right now).

(6) Henry, DT.

(7) Kalis, OG.

(8) Mone, DT.

(9) Mags, OT/OG.

(10) Ross, LB.

(11) Lewis, CB (or Countess, if Lewis is gone).

Of course I would insert one each at QB, RB, and WR (probably immediately) after my opponent took his. For QB I'd probably take Morris, Speight if Morris is gone. RB I'd probably take Smith, Green if Smith is gone. WR I'd take Darboh, Cole if Darboh is gone.

Thinking strategically, given the documented struggles with the passing game, that de-values the importance of elite secondary players like Peppers or Lewis. I would place a premium on offensive linemen and running backs to try to grind out yards and give the QB time to pass, even if those respective players aren't the most talented on the team.

Sam Webb tweeted that Mason Cole was getting reps at center today and LTT working at left Tackle in which he referred to as "top OL group". Probably by no means a final group but it seems Harbaugh is willing to try any combo to get the best five guys out there. Magnuson at LG.

On the spelling, and tried to go back and fix it, but the site would not allow me to go back and said that I was not authorized to view the web page. McCray has been making plays in practice, so I'm told, while Bolden and Morgan, a fifth year Senior, are struggling and making mistakes.

Agree with much of what has already been said regarding the OL and positions of depth vs the lack thereof.  We've all seen what happens to the entire offense when the OL sucks.  We've also seen how good an opposing defense can look when your OL sucks.  I'm hoping we'll have a solid 2-deep on the OL by fall, but my guess is that the "second string" at this point would still be pretty terrible (especially with the losses of Miller and Glasgow).  So I'd go all in...

1. M. Cole
2. Kugler (only real option at C, right?)
3. Magnuson (can play G or T)
4. Kalis
5. Lewis
6. Peppers
7. Henry (nobody left to block him)
8. Butt
9. Charlton
10. Bolden

I think there are enough "comparable" players at the remaining spots to complete a solid roster.

This is a lot harder than it should be.  We need more standout players, and I suspect that by B1G season, this will be much easier (and in the future).  In a draft, of course, a lot depends on what the other team does, but in terms of overall value I would load-up on defense (assumes all players are healthy):

  1. Joe Bolden - Captain of the defense.  Has the experience, athleticism, and leadership skills to get the most out of his team.
  2. Mason Cole - Value is inflated because there are no other "sure things" on the O-line.  Has positional flexibility as well, and with G. Glasgow gone, this guy's importance can't be overstated.
  3. Ryan Glasgow - I'll take performance over hype, thank you very much.  This former walk-on will be the anchor of Michigan's 2015 defense.
  4. Jake Butt - A sure thing on an offensive squad that doesn't have many of those.  Butt can block and catch and is a match-up nightmare for any LB on the team.
  5. Jourdan Lewis - Last year's #1 CB is this year's #1 CB.
  6. Jabrill Peppers - I love the hype, too, but can't put him any higher until he performs.
  7. Desmond Morgan - Limited athletically, but still a great LB.
  8. Amara Darboh - Came on during the second half of last season and is a proven offensive weapon.
  9. Jarrod Wilson - This guy is massively underrated by the board.  He can play center field and allow Peppers to do his thing in man coverage and run support.
  10. Willie Henry - Mercurial talent that is unblockable when he is in top form.

Honorable mentions:

  • Smith, Green, Isaac -- I see them as virtually interchangeable at this point, so I wouldn't be in a hurry to draft one.
  • James Ross III and Ben Gedeon -- There is little doubt that LB is our deepest and best position.  McCray and RJS deserve some recognition here, too.
  • Mario Ojemudia -- 7.5 TFLs last year in limited action.  Gets wiped out sometimes, but makes plays too.
  • Taco Charlton -- Has potential.  Hasn't proven it.
  • Chris Wormley -- Better than given credit for, I think Wormley finally takes his place as a difference-maker this year.
  • Jehu Chesson -- Don't count out the experiened WR that does whatever is asked of him, and is a special teams ace.
  • Dennis Norfleet -- Experience and quickness almost earned a place in my top ten, but hasn't yet been a game-changer.
  • Kyle Kalis -- New scheme should be a perfect fit.  If he can become consistent, he could transform himself into an early-round NFL pick.
  • Hurst and Mone -- NT will be a position of strength this year.
  • Magnuson -- Has never settled into a position, but has lots of experience and talent.
  • Blake Countess -- He will bounce back this year and be good-to-very-good.
