Spring Game Experience - Not about the game

Submitted by Blazefire on
So, we've heard plenty about 'this guy looked great, this guy looked terrible'. I just had myself a boatload of fun, and I have some questions about it. I went to the spring game by myself, (and later met up with my cousin), because nobody else wanted to go and it presented a good opportunity to go walk through campus and do the things I've always read about but never done. It generated some questions though, so I'm bringing them to you. I parked in the Red Lot on State, which was a nice change, because I always park on AA-Saline. I walked north on State, past Newsterban, Yost, and the buildings along there. Along the way, I noted all of the brick wall sections outside of Newsterban and Yost had chalk block M's scrawled on them. I've been down there before but never noticed it. Question one: Is this always a game day tradition? Who does it? I continued past BOX, which had a monster party going on as usual, up past law and the Quadrangle, eventually arriving at Blimpy Burger where I got my first ever. I was even first in line! A big line formed right after me, including some people who had NO idea it was the spring game. WTF people?! Question the second: the old woman who did the grilling, has she been there since they opened in 1953? She's so awesome. Also: Why, for the love of God, was there a Sparty inside BEFORE they opened up? He reached behind the counter for the tip cup while I was there! Tell me a Sparty doesn't own Blimpy Burger. After that, I walked into south downtown, and purchased a shirt at Underground Printing. The 'No Mascot' shirt, to be specific. They have too nice a storefront. With that name, it should be some rat hole in the wall or something. I left there, and returned to the stadium, going down through where the Social Work building is, and then past the Ross Business building. Hot dang, that is a seriously awesome looking building. But it does bring up one more critical question. Does attending school at U of M ensure you have rock hard calves? That was a bit of a hike!

When we played ND in 2005 I was a freshman and lived in Markley. That day I walked from Markley to the game (~1+ miles), only to realize that I left my ticket in my dorm. So, I walked back, got my ticket, walked back to the game, watched us lose, and walked back again. Moral of the story: Yes, Ann Arbor gives you rock hard calves.

Yeah, you really do get a workout walking from place to place. That was one of the first things I noticed coming here. Big change from UCLA where the campus is pretty self-contained.

Nice choice on the shirt, I also rock the No Mascot. UGP was a shitty hole in the wall last year/year before. Their new store is sick though, a definite upgrade.

the chalk M's are all over campus (including spray painted onto some grass areas by Dennison and East Hall). Not quite sure what they are for specifically, this is the first year I've seen them. The woman at Blimpie burger is sweet, she also works in the kitchens at East Quad. Underground printing used to own space across the street from their current location and it really was a pretty gross hole-in-the-wall type place.

with all the additional events. The locker room tour was cool and smaller than I expected. Also the Alumni Game was fun to watch with all the interaction between the different eras of Michigan Football. Then the National Anthem being sung by a student that was treated at Motts.

The name of the woman at Blimpy is DaVee Askew -- I've never been to blimpy, but when I was working at the Halfass in EQ, she was doing part time work for ASCFME. She's pretty cool.

Ran into Navarre at Spots. For those who weren't in attendance, he QBd one of the alumni squads. There was an hour between the alumni game and the spring game so we walked to Spot's for lunch. He came in as we were leaving. I'm pretty sure that no one else in the place had any idea who he was.

tower , a golf cart rolls by and it's Dave and his lap riding wife... that was cool, then I get in line for an $18.00 pizza (lets just say, its a little sleezers 5.00 hot and ready) and 3 red clad buckeye fans were in line. WTF....... but guys, thanks for coming up and spending your money in Michigan.
