Just checked the latest weather. 80 percent chance at 12, 90 at 1, 100 at 2. Good thing it's warm and the winds are calm. Oh, wait ... Thank god for BTN. My wife won't let me take my 4 yr old and I have to stay home with him ...

Spring Game Day Open Thread
Use the 4 year old as an excuse......mmmm hmmmm..... ;-)
Catelyn said Bran was too young too.
winter is coming
Good point.
Grow a pair! Every man MUST stand up to the wife at certain moments in life. Everything Michigan football qualifies.
BTN is showing the 1999 game against Wisconsin (tom brady at the helm) at 10am. Of course in the summary, BTN calls us "Big Blue". UGH.
Watching Henson play makes me hate the Yankees even more!
Took these after being booked to play on OSU Campus first time I have shared them but thought they would be much appreciated here!
I'm new to this... so if someone could tell me how to post the actual pics that would be great!
These are awesome! Thanks for sharing. I'm missing the spring game this year because I have to go clean my house I just sold on a short sale.... This helps take the sting out of the whole thing.
I'm not sure about embedding in the new board format, but you could probably just click the "Image" button when you are creating the post, and put in the URL.
All I ever do for embedding a picture is copy and paste.
Does anyone know if parking is free or not?
I seem to recall that red lot was open and free if you don't mind a little walk.
They want $20.
but no parking on the golf course, and Pioneer is $20

Have we figured out if its a slow or fast rain yet? Or does it even matter now that we've fired Rich Rod?
a hard MANLY driving rain that soaks you through most of the day but can be stymied by someone with a mobile umbrella, later turning lighter, quicker rain that hits you with a lot of drops, unless you're standing in the endzone, and then goes through a weather process of turning back again.
Why is anyone shocked by rain? Hoke wanted it to rain, real men play in the rain, manball is mean't to be played in the rain.
If you dont mind me asking, what the hell did you say that got you to -85301?
MGoPoints matter to me.
It's hard to get a cloud of dust when it's raining.
Any idea if it is possible to stream this online somewhere?
I had a conversation about this in another thread. I guess BTN had streaming video of the game last year on their site for $5. They aren't doing that this year though. I'm heading to a bar for the game.
Stream link:
That's cool thanks. Even though I no longer have an excuse to go to a bar at the crack of noon I think I still will.
Phantom +1 to you, sir.
this isn't live yet, right? I waiting for video but get an NBA playoff ad instead.
Stream is about to go live. Just got confirmation from the streamer.
Is there a secret to get this thing working?
Thanks for the stream!
I get an invalid embed code message? Is anyone else seeing that?
password for stream?
I just have a still frame. Anybody watching the live stream through the above link? Let me know what I'm doing wrong.
All I see is a desktop screen.
Same here
Me too. Clcked through to the actual stream on justin.tv and it's asking me for an access code :(
The access code is the password listed on the original link, which I think is "MFootball2011"
The access code is on the mgovideo.com/live page, but even if you click through it's the same thing (i.e., the desktop image).
Don't worry, I did that too (the password is on MGoVideo), but it's still the same still screen
Thanks all, should have read more attentively.
You certainly have the skills that kill.
Walking down the tunnel onto the field last night, a toddler was zig zagging in front of me. I told his mom that one day he'd be running out onto that field, and she said "he better. We named him Mason Bleu."
That's hardcore fandom right there.
it may be funnier if he turns out to be a buckeye
I just read the alumni flag roster. I sure hope they play Ufer yelling, "Touchdown Billy Taylor!!" when Billy Taylor gets the ball.
Just said they're streaming their audio live on their website.
What time does the actual game start?
i have 4 tickets that i already deleted, but if someone wants to upgrade i can email you the seat #'s. section 42 row 33.
everyone knows women dont go to purdue
We so excited we so excited. Gotta decide whether to sit in Section One or Section Ten, hangin' out with my friends.
Well, my brother in law just informed me that he is sitting next to Lloyd Brady. Lucky bastard...
...or it didn't happen.
That means I was sitting next to your brother since I was right next to Lloyd Brady as well. He was in row A of section 30 and I was in row 2.
I was the bus driver that was supposed to take the team to the stadium. I wait from 10:30-11:30 out front of schembeckler hall and see noone.
At 11:30 a woman comes out and says that Brady took the team out the back door and made them walk to the stadium.
TOUGHNESS. This team walks to games.
I love it.
Not to be a jerk, but Hoke has been coach at UM for all of 3 months. He hasn't been here long enough to have anything "classic", except in the New Coke sense.
Not to be a jerk but it was a joke.
Lighten up.
This is, after all, the time of the year when college football fans are the most desperate.
If you or someone else is willing to moderate, I'm sure you could go create one and post it here within 10 minutes.
I hope we win.
Sucks not seeing Tate
Denard more accurate than Devin, but just slightly so
'1130am? what are YOU doing up this early on a saturday? oh yeah, the spring game' haha
its been 4 months since michigan football, lets see if the swagger will finally return to ann arbor !!
The Big House looks almost empty....so much for the new reserved seat program.
Denard Robinson
>
everyone else
denard has a new helmet it seems
Ray Roundtree...sigh
Missed field goal...sigh
I think I'm going to cry
Shotgun, 1 play, 40+ yard Denard run.
Manball, 3 plays, 0 yards. Just saying.
We could turn this into a drinking game:
Everytime someone says the word:
1 shot - "Toughness"
2 shots - "A sense of toughness"
3 shots - "Shoelace"
4 shots - "Mental toughness"
5 shots - "MANBALL"
6 shots - "RichRod"
You wouldn't last 20 minutes with mental toughness getting 4(!) shots.
You forgot "there's no question" (Jim)
Gardner running right at Hoke hahaha
Hoke with solid pad level running away from the play there.
Nice run by Cox!
Oh no the defense!
Working Stream until MGoVideo starts working:
Martin TOTALLY would have tackled Denard there.
/SavedByTouchFootball
Interior D-line looks pretty solid so far.
Spring games are so conflicting.
Denard missed a bad pass to TACOPANTS i mean Hemingway
Denard needs to learn to run that ball.
With a nice catch-and-run.
But how did Will Campbell get out there to hit him on the sidelines 25 yards downfield?
Smith seemed to have a pep in his step. Maybe he's fully recovered?
These touch rules are killing me. The scrimmage is useless if they can't play some stuff out.
well, on a scale of 1-10, i give this a 2
glad to see the broekhuizen and gibbons have not improved at all in the last year
Fire him already! At least they made their PATs.
a nice shot of brian griese being bothered by a drunk guy
Talk about a "man bites dog" moment
That was actually Scotty Passink with Griese. He has cerebral palsy.

And.. It just got awkward.
An ass now.
I do
Just had an interesting mini-interview with Mike Hart who mentioned that a lot of players didn't want to come back to Michigan while RR was here and that more players want to come back now that Hoke is caoch
That makes me rage. Way to be all-in for Michigan, former players who didn't want to come back when RR was coaching.
It's pathetic. Makes me sick.
[giggle]
Mike Cox,
Please get good at blocking, etc.
ZL
Hot Sideline Reporter: Mike, what do you think Coach Hoke brings to Michigan as HC?
Mike Hart: Derp
than who's?
George Morales sightings: 1
It's crazy watching Mike Martin rush from the edge. I feel bad for whatever RB has to try to block him.
It's weird to see Denard drop back. He's looked good so far from what I've seen though.
our passing game needs some work........obviously our kicking game is vastly improved
lets keep tally of how many times we hear the words "tough" and "physical" the rest of the game
Will Campbell was not moved to OL because of injuries. And Michigan did not run a 3-4 last year.
But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln.
Jake "Sunshine" Ryan staying at home on that....
What is the access code? Thanks!

...who is jordan barpal??
Where did they find the announcers for this game they are terrible!
Good insider's perspective on Michigan FB, just what you want for a Spring Game.
two nice defensive play in a row. We'll see a lot more of this eventually.
Any chance frosh Matt Wile starts out the season as at kicker? Dude's got a leg, and clearly Gibbons and Broekhuizen are back to their 2010 form. Just a thought.
I think most people right now are assuming and praying that Wile will start.
But right now, I'm pretty disappointed. The offense looks pretty bad, and the defense has given up some big plays. Then, of course, the field goal situation. This spring game is making me very worried.
On the plus side, I was amused by the zone blitz where big Will dropped back into coverage.
You can be opptimistic and pessimistic at the same time, and be right each time.
Except I'm not feeling optimistic at all. This spring game is just making it look like Michigan is taking a huge step backwards. It's making me worry if we can even get to the same win record as last year.
No, obviously it's more important to look good in the actual game. But if you look terrible in the spring game like the offense, then that likely means that there is a gigantic improvement needed to have any chance to look good in the actual game. Especially when you're going against what was the worst defense in the Big Ten. This offense would have been shut out by pretty much any defense in the Big Ten. It's pathetic.
This isn't full speed and there is a lot of subbing to give all the guys some reps close to a game speed. Buck up man! MANBALL will prevail!
And Wile will solve all K woes - and sell hot dogs at halftime even
Has a big time arm - but both he and Drb need to learn to set their feet and to get rid of the ball quicker.
I'm bored.....
Michigan football is back. :)
I'll only know Carrball is back if we start throwing 5-yard outs. On 3rd and 8.
I kid because I love.
The old guard must feel so content and at home. Everything is right in the world again. We will have a competent defense (or better), and our offense can pretend that like the last couple decades never happened. (Of course, the old guard doesn't remember what the Mad Magicians did on the field. Hint: it wasn't run power up the middle all day.) Somebody, hand me a chardonnay and some brie!
more toughness references ahead
its both great and depressing to hear red's voice again
Is Jack Kennedy no longer our third string?
Did Jack Kennedy change his name to Steve Wilson?
Honestly, I felt a lot better about the upcoming season before watching this game. You can see how much better we look out of the gun.
appears slow to me - seem to be lacking playmakers. On a positive note the defense looks aggressive and vastly improved. I am fine with winning games 10 - 6 in the fall, as long as we win. Of course that would mean that we were able to kick a field goal.............
This guy is incredulous at your assessment:
We have playmakers, if they are utilized properly. In a paleolithic offense that is not playing against MWC defenses? Maybe not so much.
Beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, who handled us, if I remember correctly.
So it's not really a useful comparison.
Seeing as they lost to them by 5, the second closest margin of victory for TCU last year outside of Wisconsin, I'd say it is. It means that Hoke and his staff know how to game plan. TCU was just a monster last year, plain and simple.
TD, 2pt, Safety.
nice run...
Does this look like a football team with almost everyone back? This looks like 2008 all over again.
That may be a little harsh. They weren't this good halfway through 2008.
Best thing about the game was the punting. Reminds me of 2008.
Of course, we had just about everyone returning this year, including the Big Ten offensive player of the year, but at least we now have a coach that knows his way around Ann Arbor, and more of the old players feel comfortabe!
This is getting unwatchable. This team needs a lot of voluntary practice time this offseason.
I'm not usually a negative person, but not really impressed with anything yet. At least the defense looks like they know what they're doing. And at least the kickers can hit the post from 47 now instead of missing ten yards wide!
And this game reinforces all my fears and preconceptions. Mattison is a very good coach, and he'll make a competent or better defense with the talent he has (which is limited).
Hoke and Borges likely will not be able to maximize Denard and our offensive players; there will be a huge, painful period as the blocking scheme we've had since the last couple years of Carr gets thrown out the window; etc. Folks, there is a reason RR was offered the Alabama job before coming to Ann Arbor, and Hoke was considered for the Indiana and Minnesota openings. (And after Auburn let Borges go, which major program has clamored for him?)
Bash me all you want -- that's fine. I feel bad for the players, who will have to suffer through another transition, and the resulting losses.
RR is gone. Done. Fired. And it was his fault it happened. Please get over it.
still a problem for Denard.
Denard doesnt look too great throwing the ball. This worries me. But on the bright side Gardner looks pretty good.
Are the jerseys being sold for donations to Mott? I'm curious about the patches.
How does the defensive score points? I feel bad for them, they're dominating and they're still losing 7-0 : (
Pick 6 right on cue....
Has the best offense in the big 10 really scored Zero points against the worst defense in the big 10!
.
Jake Ryan has been around the ball a lot. Looks like he can contribute as a redshirt Frosh.
neither have looked sharp under center, and this one from the shotgun had an awful result (pick 6) and a second pick the next play.
I'd like to think an improved D has something to do with this...
Seriously, I think the D does have something to do with it. We were actually running D plays to get pressure and disguise coverages, instead of the ususal rush 3 and everyone else in a predicatable soft zone of the last two years.
I'm sure if we had the same offense as last year it would look like this today.
/s.
Last year during the spring game the defense looked like shit, now it's the exact opposite.
Last year, the offense looked amazing and the defense looked terrible. This year, the offense looks terrible and the defense looks mediocre.
Im gonna be optimstic and say our defense is so good, that they're dominating the best offense in the B1G
I don't know about all of you, but I'm pretty happy with the spring game so far. The defense actually looks like it knows what it's doing, and are running some pretty good confusing schemes. As for the offense, well it's pretty much exactly what I expected. Decent, but nothing very special yet. Seriously, don't worry about the offense too much. Offenses usually suck in spring games, especially with coaching and scheme changes.
Did you watch last year's spring game? Did you watch last year's offense that we returned pretty much everyone from? There is no reason that offense should be sucking in the spring game, but it is.
But that was year three in RR's scheme, and unlike last year, our D actually looks like it may know what it's doing. New scheme and real defense (hopefully) means exactly what we had in the spring game. Keep in mind that only like 60% of offense has been installed according to Borges. Hopefully the rest will be wrinkles that keep the D off-balance. And after the RR years of the offense kicking butt, I'll take the D winning this year. I have much more confidene in the O overcoming a crappy spring game by the fall than I do the D. Am I a bit dissapointed? Yes. But I'm not worried. Yet.
Seeing as our defense routinely made opposing teams look like offensive juggernauts last year, using Michigan's performance last year in the Spring Game seems silly to me. I honestly think the RR loyalists and/or Hoke haters would have ripped this game regardless of the outcome. If our offense looked great they would contend we haven't done enough on defense.
I don't think anyone could watch this and say with a straight face that our defense doesn't appear to be making significant improvement (as opposed to consistent regression the last three years).
As usual, let's not give too much credence to Spring Game performances. It will be a long year either way.
And BTW, if I'm a Spartan I'd be worried about this year as well.
One long run against the second team D and a TD on an obvious offensive pass interference again against the second team is decent? That may be one of the worst offensive performances I have ever seen.
I realize Molk and Lewan didn't play, but that was a pathetic display. It'll be interesting to see who transfers as there were a lot of unhappy looking players leaving the field today.
Stop grilling the steaks. Hot dogs for everyone.
part of the game, Can somebody tell me what kind of offense plays they were showing with Denard at QB? Were there still some designed runs for him?
We were running all kinds of stuff. A lot of pro stuff, but there were designed runs for Denard, but they didn't do a whole lot. Denard's best run came on a scramble the first play. Went big. Oh, and Cox had a 68 yard TD run where he broke some tackles and looked good.
Double. Crazy internet.
isn't very fun.
also, and i'm sure this has been touched on, STOP THROWING PICKS.
A little drowsy watching this. May have to flip over to Red Wings in a minute.
Remember: BREATHE.
Jake Ryan has peaked my interest.
Jake Ryan = AJ Hawk?
Yes, I said it!
Aagh Devin spends way too much time running backwards. At least the D is getting pressure.
Also, what's up with Quinton Washington in pass coverage?
Perhaps you missed his position switch to safety. Leave no stone unturned, etc.
As soon as we go to more of a spread look, we made a nice play on offense. I hope you're taking note of that, Al Borges and Brady Hoke.
Both offensive scores are against the second team D. I hope the 1st team D has really become the Ravens in a couple months but I find that is a little hard to believe.
Plus one of them was a big play by Mike Cox - I'm worried that we haven't seen consistency from either offense yet.
Of course they are taking note...
The staff knows, I'm sure, that elements of the offense similar to what the guys did a year ago will be successful. This is a coaching change. The new staff wants to go in a new direction, and are mixing in new concepts with some old. It's not hard to understand what is going on. It does the staff no good to simply try and keep the spread train rolling. I'd say they've done a nice job of easing into the transition.
I can't believe people really expected the offense to light it up for the spring game...
Take a deep breath, and have some f-ing faith in the staff. When it gets to August, Borges will identify the plays and concepts that maximize Denard's ability and comfort level. In the meantime, they're trying to teach new things to the guys.
My stream isn't very good. Was that TD an great throw, or a lucky arm punt a la Devin's other deep throw?
a lucky throw, it was into double coverage. Stokes just made a really good play on the ball to bail him out somewhat.
you mean shoving the DB out of the way then I guess I agree with you. Obvious offensive pass interference that wasn't called.
Arm punt for most part. No way he gets away with that in the Big Ten.
may be a chance to move up the depth chart. If only he could kick.
Is this staff really going to rely on this team running through the tackles to win games? I really would like to see a lot more zone reads and designed carries for denard. Hopefully they're not running him to protect from injury.
We've run zone read and it's been stuffed. They will run Denard more if he is the starter. Keep in mind this is a spring practice and they he needs as many reps passing as possible.
They didn't run the zone read last year. Either that, or Denard made a lot of poor reads. I think they ran the look a lot, but didn't run the actual read too much.
Watching this game is like driving a Ferrari 15 mph.
I miss the fast tempo of the spread, but this defense is making me very happy.
These technical difficulties brought to you by All State.
ahha nice
What happened to using TEs? I see them out there but we haven't been throwing to them at all...
A long time ago, in a place far far away, tight ends used to block.
QB - Denard still hasn't been able to overcome his tendency to overthrow the open receiver downfield. Devin looked pretty bad to me, his TD to Stokes wasn't the result of a good throw(it was actually pretty bad), but a great play by Stokes.
RB - Cox looked good, but Shaw needs more carries(perhaps injury prevented this), less Smith please
Defense looked better, but I don't know how much better they would've looked if it wasn't for the bad QB play, the secondary was burned a few times but our QBs weren't able to connect.
There is no way that Furman is a sub 4.4 forty, he really couldn't close the gap against Cox. Looks to be in the high 4.5s.
Ryan looked great
For the life of me, please don't put our QBs under center during the regular season, you can see it simply doesn't compliment them very well.
I'm not sure how to feel about the Spring Game. Not sure if the results were due to improvement on defense, or difficulty executing on offense (particularly re: the run). Any other thoughts on this?
All the passing yards now have to come honestly. There are no wide open Illinois-game passing lanes because the D has to keep an eye on the entire width of the line of scrimage.
Yes.
Jake Ryan was nothing short of spectacular. Carvin looks great. The D line stuffed a bunch of runs. Love the tight coverage in the secondary. Thank God for Mattison.
Offense? I don't like it so much. Pace is too slow. I know the goal is ball control but I don't think we're going to be able to run MANBALL with much success given the zone blocking pedigree of our O line. I want to see a ton more spread formations, shotgun, read option and QB designed runs.
If you figure that the offense has had about 3 months to learn a whole new offense and the defense has been pumped to show them that they've improved, I'm not surprised by this performance. It will be interesting to see who emerges from the pack at QB because it sounds like Denard might get squeezed out unless Borges pulls his head out of his butt and starts running plays for the reigning B1G OFEENSIVE POY!
Several things were going on:
1. They were running plays to see if the kids knew them - not running plays to score.
2. Our offense can't handle a blitz, and we're in trouble because we're going to get blitzed A LOT!!!!!!!! Naked boot legs probably aren't going to work at any point of the season with Denard and Devin...
3. Defense is far better than offense. Why? Well... because we have the equivalent of RR on defense now. That and the OL is undersized for what they're doing.
4. There was a near miss on a 40 yarder......? Finally. Someone who can kick it 40 yards.
5. We need to get much better at passing.
Offense:
QBs: We have 4 of them. Holy crap.
RBs: Mike Cox should have been elected Governor. Michael Shaw should be elected Badass-and-Chief. Vince Smith... he used to be my favorite... now he's got issues, nice catch though.
OL: NICE TRAP BLOCKING! but you forgot how to zone block. Also, snap the damn football TO the QB.
WR: Catch ball; will score. Drop ball; we'll cry.
Defense:
DL: Hello! Welcome to Michigan. We've been expecting you.
LB: Ta.. Ta.. Twins? I can't believe you both came.
DBs: HOW DO YOU ALLOW A 30 YARD COMPLETION WHEN THERE ARE TWO OF YOU AND ONE OF THEM!? Oh, also I'm glad you learned how to cover.
I should add, it's much easier to teach a player how to blitz (especially when they already knew how to) than it is to teach them multiple new pass blocking schemes and techniques.
The best part was the interviews after the game.
I feel empty now. I'm faced with a roaring silence for 5 months.
Too bad there's not a Summer Game.
if he's "all in" and Michigan still sucks? We may find out.
BLUE WINS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was considering rushing the field.
but I hope everyone can have a beer and chill the fuck out.
1) You CAN'T possibly believe our D won't be improved under Mattison. Seeing signs of that already.
2) The offense has had what, twenty practices? Offense takes longer than D to learn new schemes, etc. I doubt if we saw more than half of it, run by guys still learning, (hesitating, overthinking etc.).
3) Two of our top OL were out. One of the major problems on offense was blocking and protection. Plus they're still learning the damn plays too.
4) QB play was indeed spotty, but WTF, see #2 about overthinking instead of going on autopilot.
5) Don't forget that our D has seen the plays in practice and has an advantage, especially when to O is probably working with a limited playbook at this point.
Relax...it is year one. Recruiting is looking up, we will have Woolfolk back, kicking CAN'T get any worse and Wile will be in camp. Defense is going to improve, and we have talent on Offense. They are going to look better in the fall.
