Speight is a dude
I am beginning to think that we are witnessing the next Qb to continue the line of Michigan Qbs starting in the NFL.... Of all the success recently with the wins and such, the biggest revelation, by far, is the improvement and rise of Wilton Speight. I've been watching him intently on every play....and am floored what Harbaugh has done here... this trumps his mentoring of Rich Gannon, a career journeyman turned top fantasy mvp star under Harbaugh. QB Whisperer, AMEN... Speight is pulling a ton of tricks and moves from nowhere, eluding pressure at an NFL level like Big Ben, continuing plays he had no business doing a year ago, just incredibly heady play all around. His pocket presence is fantastic. When I read he was way ahead of Rudock, I didn't believe it... fact is, it is not even close. Going forward, even on a low improvement level, we are looking at a starting NFL Qb in Speight, especially with another year here. His story may parallel Brady's time here somewhat.... was on the verge of transferring, behind the newcomer, yet perservered, and playing on Sundays.
Sure, I may be getting too forward on my skis here, but I cannot imagine I'm the only one who noticed the extremely proper Qb play by Speight in all facets, especially at eluding pressure.

Relax. We'll see during better teams.

This is no time to relax. If you're not on the hype train, then you're probably a commie. I would expect more maniacal behavior from someone named Mitchamaniac.

I thought he played offense and are you sure you cleared this with Don Brown???

This is exactly why the snowflake threads exist

Not quite.... for Speight showed me enough today, to merit his own thread... its that important.... if you don't think so, then try to remember what it was like with Gardner, Morris, etc.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:09 PM ^
Quite literally, this is what the snowflake threads are for. Speight has been good, don't get me wrong, but there's a place designated for this. He isn't a Heisman level player, so I don't see any reason why a QB who throws for 200 yards and 1 TD on 64% completions deserves his own thread.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:52 PM ^
Yeah really. Sure, Speight played well, but a lot of mediocre QBs would have won this game too given the rest of the team around him. This game wasn't exactly a revelation.
September 25th, 2016 at 12:00 AM ^
He's been good. I'd argue he's better than Rudock was at this point last year. But he hasn't been spectacular. He's been exactly what he needs to be so far. And that's more than good enough. I didn't see anything special today. In fact, I saw more he needs to improve on than things that impressed me. I don't see the point of this thread.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:07 AM ^
I was agreeing with you :)
September 24th, 2016 at 11:53 PM ^
"Speight showed ME enough today"
Well, aren't you a special little...snowflake.
September 25th, 2016 at 12:17 AM ^
Who played on one leg vs. OSU?
Don't disparage that Dude while trying to anoint the next Dude.
September 25th, 2016 at 8:50 AM ^
well, shit, there's only like 8 different snowflakes threads, and not one of them is the "Snowflakes: QBs: Speight: future notes: NFL prospects" thread, so what's an MGoReader with a truly insightful and unique comment supposed to do??
September 24th, 2016 at 11:03 PM ^
Let's pump the brakes there, chief. Wilton has been reasonably good. He has not been great, and this is against sub-par competition. Let's see what he's got in the bag against Wisky next week.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:15 PM ^
However on the plus side we are scoring 6+ touchdowns a game
September 24th, 2016 at 11:04 PM ^
Compare this to last week - when some brainiac said he'd rather have ND's Kizer than Speight. LOL!! Yeah, I'm confortable with Speight.
Honestly, I don't think it will be very long before Michigan has a backup QB selected in the draft, ala Matt Cassle. This guy Harbaugh, he can coach a QB now...
September 24th, 2016 at 11:54 PM ^
Eh, I didn't say that, but actually I would rather have Kizer.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:56 PM ^
I'd definitely rather have Kizer

Uh yeah, I would take the qb who most are projecting as the #1 overall pick over Speight.

This post has a weird James Joyce vibe.

It just seemed a little stream-of-consciousness to me, a series of thoughts strung together and connected with ellipses.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:05 PM ^
but there are bigger test to come. As long as he keeps improving from week to week along with everyone else.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:06 PM ^
Cool your jets man, I'm pleased as well but we have seen one good secondary and he wasn't great against them. He had a number of easy throws that were off target today that concerned me a little. I trust harbaugh but it's way too early to make this declaration
September 24th, 2016 at 11:06 PM ^
I'm not sure he has NFL arm talent, but who knows.
September 25th, 2016 at 8:27 AM ^
he is accurate, when his mechanics are sound. If they aren't then that's when balls sail on him.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:07 PM ^
Hes done very well and Im glad he's our quarterback. But I think Peters wins the job next year and doesnt let go of it for 4 years.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:08 PM ^
This is exactly why the snowflake concept was formed in the first place. Thanks for playing.

I think everyone should start a #hottake thread

Hey did someone call me? I'm a full organ.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:56 PM ^
I'm pretty sure it's real. I think he steps forwards quickly just at the right time.
September 25th, 2016 at 12:27 AM ^
Or, Occam's razor: he's a shapeshifter.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:06 AM ^
Definitely not sarcasm. Everyone knows Dantonio dabbles in the dark arts.

I like it when a guy has a couple of drinks and decides it's a great idea to tell the world his opinion on all of the things. +1
September 24th, 2016 at 11:48 PM ^
He may have the delight of being stoned like I am now
September 24th, 2016 at 11:10 PM ^
Sole your role, skippy. They haven't played anyone impressive, excluding Colorado to an extent. He also has receiving core that may be one of the best. I'll wait until this upcoming Wiscy game before I get on the Speight hype train.

speight is the product of harbaugh genius. wait til peters or mccaffrey are ready
September 24th, 2016 at 11:10 PM ^
He's definitely shone poise and is maximizing his potential under Harbaugh (what the limits of that potential are is TBD). Fortunately for him, he still has 2 more years to learn from the QB guru
September 24th, 2016 at 11:11 PM ^
Speight was decent today. That's about it. He missed several short and intermediate throws that would have cost us against better teams.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:36 PM ^
Totally agreed. I thought he was totally serviceable, but far from world-beating. He missed a lot of very easy throws and was bailed out on even more, and on some it looked like his arm was literally throwing at 70%. There were enough weird moments where my confidence obviously didn't soar like OP. Wisconsin will make him win the game next week.

Not to be that poster, but this sounds an awful lot like a snowflake.
Edit: late to the punch here. My b.

While I hope you're right, this is just about as an extreme view as the folks here wanting him to be pulled last week against CU

Jim Harbaugh didn't coach Rich Gannon. He coached the backup QB's in Oakland, Marc Trestman coached Rich Gannon.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:19 PM ^
That's accurate. Harbaugh himself said so in some coaching clinic video I watched. The OC had Gannon, he had backups.
September 25th, 2016 at 12:27 AM ^
Not to mention that a QB as experienced as Rich Gannon was in 2002 doesn't really need a position coach.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:17 PM ^
Watching the game again, i too am very impressed by how well he was able to shake and elude pressure in and out of the pocket. There was a play where he literally juked a pursuing DL from his blindside and then rolled around to complete a 7 yard gain. There are issues that he needs to improve upon, but regardless of what happens this year, imagine what another year under Harbaugh can do for this dude.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:37 PM ^
Yeah he's all well and good but the guy can't hit the broad side of a barn. He makes Jake Butt jump up and almost killed Perry today with him having to come back for that low pass. I hope he breaks every record and wins every game but I don't think he will.
