Special Teams Coach

Submitted by KC Wolve on

Just curious.  I know UM doesn't have a dedicated special teams coach and I was wondering if this was the norm at big schools?  They have obviously been atrocious thus far with the kickoffs out of bounds, consistently returning kicks out of the endzone and ending up at the 15, and the circus that is a punt return (better as of late).  Just curious.

It is.  NCAA rules limit teams to nine assistants on staff, which makes it tough to have room for a guy exclusively dedicated to special teams.  Even those schools who do have one almost never hire a former kicker.  At most schools, kickers are basically left to do their own thing.  That's always been the case at Michigan.

Tony Gibson is clear the poison of the team. If he cannot make the secondary good enough (yeah, our secondary is young!), why should he take more responsibility. He should focus on the secondary more. Besides, according that michigan daily article, he seems have no clue how to coach kicker/punter. Why couldn't other assistant coaches  help on this? If nobody knows how to coach, consult with Mesko! My point is if Gibson cannot  finish one assignment, don't hand him two.

Although i am an RR suporter, but I personally want Gibson go. Well, since Gibson is RR's buddy and he's recruiting fairly well, fine, give him a recruit coordinator and let him do what he's doing the best. Somehow, after watching 3 seasons under RR, although he's an offense master, I can see he is sowhow a little sturbborn on some issues, make very slow adjustments throughout the season. 3rd and 1, no V Smith on the field! Hopkins is the solution for this situation, especially in bigten! coach! Even DR QB draw is better than handing off to smith!

Besides, I think it was in MSU game, we are losing in the 2nd half, there was a camera shooting GERG's face , he's like :-( but very focus. And I saw Gibson is very relaxing and smiling behind him. WTF!

Huh?  The recruiting coordinator is the guy who doesn't go on the road.
