Spath: Red unlikely to retire on his own

Unless promoted by the Michigan AD, I'm hearing it's very likely Red Berenson will not to choose to retire on his own.

@UmPuckhead Nope.

This seems.....odd. MGrowOld will have a field day with this. Getting the popcorn ready now.

I got shit for saying he wasn't leaving over the past couple of weeks and I got shit again today from Bando (no surprise - he's as bad with me as Timmay is with WD) when I said my friend who coaches hockey at UM Dearborn hadn't heard the Red is leaving.

The worst thing you can be around here is correct with bad news. Much more better to be wrong with good news.

Its not a dilemma.  There is no such thing as earning the right to retire on your own terms.  Being a great coach buys you a few extra years before getting fired, but once a coach being around is harming the program they need to go, doesn't matter what they did in the past.  You don't get paid millions of dollars to lead a high profile sport out of nostalgia.

I think you do need to ask what he's done. There should be a succession plan. He's has enough time. It's ridiculous to not have one. Red should have been told last year that this year was it and he needed to be ready to retire. So far all Warde has obviously done is collect a paycheck.

So far all of the evidence is completely circumstantial, from what I can see. How do we know he hasn't had four contingency plans and 20 changes of circumstance to complicate the succession issue? How would we know if he wasn't working to keep Red until some coach he really wants becomes available next year? If someone who is close to these stories wants to put together the case for his malfeasance, I'd love to see it. One thing we know--cooler heads rarely prevail on the internet.

In fact, maybe it's time for Brian and staff to do a story on Warde's tenure to date?

I think you're still taking far too much credit for your friend at Dearborn. As far as I can tell we still have no idea if he actually knows anything. Seems like you're taking credit for being 'right' when none of us knows what's going on yet (unless you have some other source I'm not aware of)

Seems like we still haven't heard anything conclusive and the rumor mill spitting out a lot of 'Red is staying' but still some 'Red is retiring'

The Dearborn coach.  A guy coaching an unrelated team at a different school hasn't gotten the news yet?  I'm shocked.

There are Ann Arbor employees far closer to the situation that haven't been told anything, because Red Berenson isn't telling anyone anything -- either way.

He might try to return next year (the lack of announcement makes that look like the case), but the UM-Dearborn guy is closer to last in line to find out than he is first.

In your zeal to try and refute any and everything I've posted on this subject did you happen to see the part where I said he claimed to be FRIENDS with Red?  That he's in his early 70's and has coached in the Metro Detroit area all his life?   And that I have no way of verifying this to be factual but also no reason to doubt him either?

It's amazing.  I referenced his status as an assistant coach only to demonstrate what the guy does - not that the assistants at Dearborn have a pipeline of information to AA.  His relationship (allegedly) is PERSONAL.

You've locked in on the Dearborn situation and are completely ignoring the part where he actualy might know something.  But hey, it's unpleasant news so it's got to false right?

Pepto Bismol

April 7th, 2017 at 11:25 AM ^

Because in your post to which I replied, you did not mention that the Dearborn coach was a personal friend of Berenson.  I'm not sure how I was supposed to know that.  You didn't mention that rather important factor here until just now.  Your post above only states your reference's qualifications as a fellow coach in the same sport at a related institution.

This situation is already unpleasant because the hockey program is in desperate need of a new leader and Berenson can't figure out how to let go.  You have nothing to do with it (other than being a daily can of miserable gasoline).

I'm not trying to refute you personally.  I find your incessant Manuel angst childish and petty with no actual supporting substance.  I've replied to others below just the same.  This has nothing to do with you other than I think your ill-conceived dimestore takes are an embarrassment to Michigan's fan base.

No offense.  Go Blue.

And I was referencing in my post above the grief I took for it, mostly from my dear old freind Bando who simply cannot believe that two people, of roughly the same age and working in the same sport in the same area for many, many years could possibly have a personal relationship - what with one being a club coach and all.  But that's more a result of Bando's dislike of me on a personal level than his actually not believing it IMO.

I will say give credit where credit is due however.  In my 57 years on the planet I've never been called "a can of miserable gasoline" or had my opinions classified as as "ill-conceived dimestore takes that are an embarrasment to Michigan's fan base."  Not even Bando has launched those salvos (although I'm sure he's thought it many times)

I mean....how thin-skinned would a person have to be to take offense at that?

I'm sorry, but no. It's pretty much a certainty that an assistant coach at a lower-level team on a different campus, no matter what his "personal' relationship probably is(n't) with Red Berenson, is not going to know information that you'd essentially need to be in the room to know. He's not going to know the inner workings of 1000SSS from the end of the bench in Dearborn.

April 7th, 2017 at 1:24 PM ^

Conversely, isn't it plausible that Red told a personal friend "hey man, I'm never retiring, they'll have to pull my cold dead fingers off this bench", regardless of that guy's hockey coaching affiliation and acumen?  I have no dog in this fight and honestly don't care which of you two is right, but I find the story plausible.  If he was some random 30 year old second year assistant, yeah, i agree, highly unlikely he's that plugged in.  But I'd don't have any difficulty believing another long time hockey coach (even one who, gasp, coaches an hour away and is only a mere assistant) might have become friends with Red at one point in the past and may have had a conversation with Red about a major topic in his life, and thus may be privvy to information that the rest of us aren't.   Not saying MGrowOld's source is right (and again, I don't really care who's right, we'll see what happens sooner or later), but it's not some crazy leap of plausibility like you're saying.

And what people keep overlooking are two critical points I made yesterday:

1. That I myself dont know if it's true or not.  I said, (twice) that he claims friendship and I have no way of proving it or disproving it but I also have no reason to doubt him either.

2. That he didnt say "Red is staying" or anything even close to that.  I posted in a thread where the OP claimed HE had inside sources saying Red was telling all his friends he was leaving.that someone I knew hadnt heard that from him.  That's a critical point that Bando and my new BFF Pepto keep missing.  The OP claimed Red was telling his friends he was outta here.  My friend (who claims to be Red's friend) hadn't heard that.

That's a huge difference between me making the claim he's staying or going and somehow it's gotten lost in the "OMG MGROWOLD DOESNT LIKE WARDE so everything he says must be wrong" kerffufle currently underway.

I unknowingly jumped into your story today, not knowing all of the details of yesterday.  Taken on its face, it reads above like "My Dearborn buddy says he's staying".  I laughed because if all you're going on is some hockey coach's opinion, you'd agree that it's ludicrous and I made a snide comment.

I get it.  You were not.  Your friend is connected.  That's fair.  Reading your entire point #2 here, I 100% agree with you and am actually in the same boat.

I'm also more than willing to separate this from your Warde issues.  I've read your Manuel rants 1000 times in dozens of threads and I feel safe in saying you're a crazy person (when it comes to the AD at least).

Good talk though, today.  Lots of man-hours burned.  Sales are down.  Enjoy your weekend.

Yeah that's a bit of a stretch.  I mean go Dearborn and all (I've had family play there back when they were a legitimate team), but a coach there really wouldn't have inside information.

However, I have heard from folks inside Michigan Hockey that they don't THINK he's going anywhere.  Take that for what it's worth.  Still, no one KNOWS anything.

You may be taking this whole message-board thing a little too seriously.

Manuel needs to play hard ball. Offer two options:

A) retire of your own volition, you help find a new coach (not unilaterally naming the successor but maybe getting veto power), we name the ice "Red Berenson Rink" at Yost Ice Arena. You get a statue installed by the next home opener. Exit as a deserved legend.

B) you are outright released from your duties as HC and we move on with or without you and that's the end of the story. Take it or leave it.

to Brian's post were because of the "RedPa" comment, which I and many others find to be very distasteful. I don't characterize that at all to be "crapping on" Brian. Does Red need to go? I don't think there's much doubt for most of us that the answer is "YES!". But for the sake of everything Michigan and everyone involved, I hope it's handled with class. Maybe someone within Red's inner circle of friends and family could be the catalyst in convincing Red of the merits of a graceful exit; otherwise, it's on Warde Manuel to do his job in a respectful way.

Save Us Mel

April 7th, 2017 at 9:08 AM ^

Do all the things to honor him, but tell him that it's over.  The recruiting classes have really dropped off the last two years and we can't afford to waste another class.  Let's face it, it's hard for a coach to recruit when the kids know he could be gone anytime.  And the in-game coaching has fallen off since Mel left.  Bring back Mel and have him say all the right things about Red in a joint press conference.

He's probably like a lot of old people at the end of their careers who don't know what they are going to do next so he's hanging on for dear life. It's time for him to step aside and hand this program over to someone else, otherwise we'll be back in this exact same situation next year.

Well, this isn't good. It would be nice if Michigan were a contender to attend the Frozen Four in Detroit in 2019. They won't be so long as Red is the coach. He needs to step down. Retire, Red.

I can personally attest that management is all fun and games until someone crosses a line that is beyond your control and that the next steps must be enacted by you on behalf of others. That feeling is one of the worst that I know.

As for Red's situation, I would love to see him bow out gracefully - taking it to a point where something has to happen and it is going to happen to him is not the end I would have projected for Red.
