Sparty No: MSU Hockey fills out coaching staff with more SpartanBLOOD!

Submitted by Wolverine In Exile on

So MSU's Tom Anastos has filled out his staff (http://www.detnews.com/article/20110425/SPORTS0202/104250393/1361/Kelly-Miller-returns-to-MSU-as-assistant-hockey-coach):

- Kelly Miller, former MSU player, 15 yr NHL vet. NY Islanders ass't coach 2001-3 (div finishes in that timespan, 5th, 2nd, 3rd). Most recently in "private banking".

- Mike Gilmore, volunteer coach for goalies. Also a MSU alum, most recently he was an "investment advisor". Volunteer coach at MSU in 94-96

- Tom Newton, retained from previous staff. Ass't for past 21 years to Comley & Mason.

So MSU will have great financial portfolios and tremendous representation by the coaching staff at alumni board meetings, but a solid checking line? No idea on Newton's importance in Mason's success or Comley's demise. That's to be determined...

Commence LOLZ Sparty. As was said in another thread, Penn St had a better hire, and they have 0 Div I wins to their name!

Kelly Miller was also a player coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins for 1 season, and a ass't coach with Anaheim for 1 season. (http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-hockey/mtt/miller_kelly00.html)

Also after reading Newton's bio, we have his highest job qualification "Newton and his wife Eve have two children: Ted, who serves as the CCHA's communications manager; and Emma, who is a sophomore at MSU. " Guess Tommy A's gotta keep those CCHA front office brotherhoods connected.

So I guess a little better than initial thoughts, but still a huge question IMO.

This looks even worse when held up next to what seems to be a great Penn State hire.  How can a program with the history and tradition of Michigan State hockey, a team that is just 4 years removed from winning a National Championship have gotten into such a mess?

yes, actually. Miller had been a successful ass't coach in the pros at multiple stops according to team records and probably one of the more famous Spartan hockey alums.  Put Miller as HC instead of Anastos and add in an experienced D-I ass't and the staff at least looks competent. As it is, it's the CCHA front office old boy network and the rest filled out by the Michigan State Alumni network facebook page.

You're not kidding there.  At least Brady Hoke was a credible hire for Michigan, as an alumnus, former assistant, and successful head coach at a couple non-BCS schools.  Anastos and the rest of the msu hockey staff seems to be a bunch of who-dats with precious little experience actually coaching at the NCAA D-I level.   Very strange, to say the least.   How do sparties feel about the staff?  Can't be good...
