Sparty No!!!
Wasn't that last punt a perfect analogy for this Michigan State team? They score a TD, or come close to it, and they get a penalty which makes them lose the game.
I thought he was some what pushed into the kicker, but still.
Stay away from the Rose Bowl another 20 years by it....
"I don't know if he hit him," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. -- from USAToday today. Guess he didn't see the replay.
You are my hero.
+ Eleventy bazillion.
Perfect
Them losing on a penalty is poetic justice. Served.
The only way it could've been better was if Gholston had been the one to get the penalty.
That derp was the most enjoyable derp in the history of derps.
Gholson. Tom Gholson, thank you very much.
My wife says MSU plays football like their solar car races. And, she was at the Formula Sun Grand Prix, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and saw MSU's solar car in person. I lol'd loudly at her great analogy.
Man, if I were a state fan, I'd be pissed.
Fortunately, I'm the opposite of a state fan.
If you were a State fan you would be pissed, however, it was the right call, and probably could have been a 15-yarder. Course, I'm sure you're not a State fan, so we're all good!
He ran into the kicking leg, right?
Pissed because you don't think it was a legitimate call or pissed because it was soooo stupid?
I think he means pissed in the sense of "completely fucking wasted on Natty Ice since 2 this afternoon" but I don't wanna put words in his mouth.
"...completely fucking wasted on the four Natty Ices he's had since 2 this afternoon."
Fixed that for you.
the same Isiah Lewis who, as Gordon said, "got trucked like a ho" on Montee Ball's first run from scrimmage game 1 of MooU - Wiscy in East Lansing.
second some idiot Sparty was on Sirius college sports radio tonight congratulating Wiscy but downing UM, remindig the host of Little Brother comment, sayig that Hart works at EMU cause that is the only job he can get and smacking Wal-Mart wolverines. Goes to show UM owns Sparty psychologically and next year on the field.
The inferiority complex is so bad up there that anything that happens to Sparty, whether it is good or bad, is always compared Michigan.
It's not that they had a shot to go to the Rose Bowl and lost legitamately, but that Michigan sucks because they may have a shot at a BCS bowl and boo hoo.
Makes me smile.
Pissed because you're a State fan?
If you were a State fan, I'd be laughing at you now. Good think you're not. It's an evil laugh.
So what are the odds they'll be ranked ahead of us BCS wise. That would be dumb because I don't think any bowl wants them as at large.
I'm kind of hoping we finish 14th and MSU finishes 13th. Then we get picked for a BCS bowl and they don't. That would be perfect.
That would make me go ape if I was a State fan, but seeing as how I am the opposite of that, it is a dream scenario!
There is precedent for this, back in 1999. A repeat would be nice as a reminder to State about who matters nationally.
Teams that should fall below us: Houston, UGA, Oklahoma. That puts us at 13th or so. MSU can't move up by common voting precedence, so that means we should pass them and go to 12th. The only way we don't pass MSU is if Baylor passes both of us, MSU stays at 13 and Michigan goes to 14.
I think we are ranked in the 11-13 range tomorrow. What's good about this, though, is that it probably keeps MSU ahead of TCU, potentially leaving them out of the bowl if Georgia and Houston don't both fall past them. If OSU gets into the NCG, then that means that there are 3 true non-AQ picks in the BCS because Houston is no longer an AQ and Bama would eat the #3/#4 non-champ AQ, leaving Stanford as an at-large team. That opens up potential teams for us to play. Stanford, Baylor, KSU, BSU, VaTech, and WVU are all possibilities at this point.
Moo U always seems to do some stupid $hit to get themselves out of a game. History repeats itself over and over again. Mike Clark (WRIF) is having a meltdown as I type this.
lost so UM still has a good shot at a BCS bowl. OU and UGA losing big help Michigan a lot.
They're already way behind in the computers, so falling even a couple of spots in the polls will be enough for us to pass them.
it's ok people oklahoma lost bad, houston lost, and georgia lost. We'll be in the top 14
Probably not. OU, Georgia, probably Houston will all drop below us.
I think it tastes delicious, not bitter at all.
Bitter like a sweet, sweet jar of Sugar!!!!!
Like a big bowl of Krusty Flakes.
could someone enlighten me on the bitter half of this..? I understand the sweet!
It's bittersweet that it's a virtual lock that Michigan will be BCS Bowling and sparty will not.
Bittersweet would imply that there was something bad about that.
I posted once, and it's all over ... sorry - lol.
I feel, with Michigan and Ohio State down, this was MSU's biggest chance to do something -- go to the ROSE BOWL, while we were down, and it didn't happen... Thing is, Ohio State won't be down for long, nor will Michigan. When will MSU play in the Big Ten Championship again ..... I am betting it'll be awhile.
how is that "down"? Except for losing to an MSU team that, per Brady, manhandled us, and to an Iowa team we should've at least had the chance to tie at the end of regulation, how were we down this season?
Sorry - my bad.
But you can't feel bad for Sparty here .. you can't.
because they didn't pass the course the first time?
/sparty fail
As I remember either they lost big or win. A competitive game won't drop them much.
That helped:)
Apparently over on rcmb that was a "bullshit call" and the punter is a "fucking flopper"
Don't run into the punter -- EVER!
One rose bowl in over 40 years
That screams on how lucky we've been.
Hopefully ... Michigan can get back there soon.
...as the day 4 billion people broke the internet by simultaneously tweeting, e-mailing, blogging and posting a simple two-word phrase....
SPARTY NO!!!
Sparty gonna spart.
Needs to call every game. I could care less about both of these teams but his announcing made this game for me.
Right
Youtube link to Sparty no?
I officially like the new championship game format. Sitting on the couch eating apple pie while watching that no-tackling joke of a game unfold was highly entertaining.
Dantonio discipline at its finest. Comes back to bite 'em. I can't think of a more Sparty way for that game to end. Hope they like the Outback Bowl.
1st question of post game presser: Mark...so where do u see michigan going bowling...sugar or fiesta?
very sweet indeed!
MD called for the block (according to the radio).
"We're still one of the best 2 teams in the B1G" ....
we will see ... we will see!
Go Blue!
It's amazing how well they played tonight with no Sparty No!! moments. And then when they're in perfect position to come back with 2 minutes left, they pull the second biggest Sparty No!!!! moment of all time. (2006 Notre Dame still ranks first.)
I dunno man. This wasn't an epic collapse, no, but the big stage and bright lights have something to say too. I'm gonna have to say this trumps that one. Also partly because Dantonio was supposed to eliminate Sparty No moments and instead he indirectly created one.
I couldn't disagree more. This was in the conference title game and a shot at their first Rose Bowl in almost a quarter century. This was the best shot MSU had to get to Pasadena and it went up in couch flames because Sam the Eagle thought he'd get cute and call for the most unnecessary punt block in the history of Spartan Football.
No. This was by far the biggest Sparty No moment in their pitiful history.
I guess you're right. First Rose Bowl since the Reagan administration would have been huge.
2006 ND was still epic bad.
Why they hell would you try and block that? Fakes? Penalties? As we saw, any mistake ends the game.
as they mentioned how bad it was to lose on a roughing the kicker call!
It keeps cracking me up watching him practically giggle with MSU hatred.
Even if sporty wants to try and defend themselves, by using the excuse of the punter "faked" it. Lewis still ran into him. ERGO, state blows
Sparty losing a close one is bad for us BCS-wise, but still: a perfect ending. Sparty, No! indeed.
I had full-on hyena laughter going on for a solid 5 minutes after that penalty was called. I even danced.
Karma's a bitch
To quote the German foosball player on Community this week: "I wish there was a word to describe the pleasure I feel at viewing your misfortune".
Community's writing is above so many other sitcoms'.
ze German would know more words in his own language: schadenfreude
I really think he is going to cry on this Brewster interview right now.
HAHA, on the penalty "I don't know if he touched the guy or not". What a crybaby.
"I don't know if we'll go to a BCS game or not, we're certainly one of the best 2 teams in the conference..."
Man, this guy is whining like a baby.
That was incredibly hilarious...but the sweetest part of that interview was the subtly ironic part where he basically scoffed at the idea that the game hinged on Wisconsin's "throw it up and pray" 4th down play that led to the GW TD. Just delicious.
dantonio just said he's not sure his guy touched the punter
Wasn't able to watch. Anyone have a link to a video of the penalty?
Isiah Lewis is a hoe
At the BCS. He Sparty'd it and now he gets blown up by Arkansas
Plaxico'd it!
They did beat Michigan. If a BCS bid is to be determined by play on the field then MSU deserves a bid over Michigan. However, we adults understand that the BCS is a business and as a business they will take the option with the highest level of earning potential. UM is that option in this scenario.
The BCS ratings are already going to be brutal this year, they don't need another team with a "meh" fanbase.
10-3 we're 10-2, Nebraska is 9-3 They beat us, we beat Nebraska, nebraska beat them. We beat ND also, they didn't. Our resume is better than theirs.
k, just FTW.
got hammered by two teams that Michigan beat, one of those Neb, Michigan beat in convincing fashion. To me that makes the two teams pretty similar, in terms of deserving a spot. One head to head win does not represent the entirety of the two team's resumes.
Bourbon Street is so much sweeter than Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. GO BLUE!
So Sparty way to lose. I actually think for competitiveness they would give Oregon a much tougher time than Wiscy.
But a loss in a way only Sparty could conceive...
Outstanding, simply outstanding Team Dantonio.
Bourbon Street is so much sweeter than Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. GO BLUE!
I really don't care what this does to what bowl we land in - we'll get a good one, far better than in the last 3 years, and a really good chance to win, no matter what. I'm just so happy to see Sparty go down . . . due to stupid penalties no less. I grit my teeth and curse under breath watching MSU. Honestly, I hate OSU and ND (but generally respect them - okay, maybe not OSU so much) but I despise, revile, abhor MSU.
ON WISCONSIN!
I enjoyed that Sparty moment immensely.
That was the mother of all Sparty No plays. You're going to get the ball back in decent field position with nearly two minutes and only needing a field goal to tie. You don't even THINK about rushing the punter on 4th and 3 in that situation. That may have been the single dumbest penalty I've ever seen any team take, and I vividly remember the 2001 MSU and 2006 OSU games.
That was what went through my head as I watched Sparty do what they do best--implode.
The Spartans of centuries past were known for their discipline. These Spartans are known for their lack thereof. Oh, the delicious irony.
Bourbon Street is so much sweeter than Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa - GO BLUE!
Attempting to block that punt was almost as stupid as tsiO trying to block the punt against LSU in the 2008 MNC. The only difference was the LSU punter got leveled and the Badger punter kind of World Cup'd it. But still funny to see Sparty implode so close to grabbing the brass ring.
The only thing that bothered me about the game was the final score. Brought back some tough memories.
Noooooo!
I am going to sleep like a little kid tonight with gum drops and sugar plumbs dancing in my dreams with Isaiah Lewis (ss- #9) crying in the background. Lol. Priceless!
I just love how they're bitching about the officiating when they constantly call us out on bitching about officiating.
at The Only Colors are calling it a legitimate call. Some from other fan bases are sympathizing w/ them saying they got screwed. But credit to the Sparty fan base as most weren't whining.
I'm reading RCMB, and there's only a few who are saying it was legit.
My favorite: "watching the replay...UW fans should thank the UW player who blocked/pushed Lewis a little bit.....Lewis would not have run into the punter if he had not been pushed."
God forbid an offensive lineman pushes a player who's trying to block a punt. The Wisconsin player wasn't even beat on that play, he shoved him to the outside, but Lewis's momentum carried him right into the punter. There's at least a 2 second delay from the block to the penalty.
He was fairly close to being blocked into the punter. The blocker changed his path. That said, too bad Sparty, enjoy watching Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.
What makes this even more priceless is they are bitching about the overrule following instant replay of Keyshawn Martin's catch, where he probably came down out of bounds and certainly bobbled and dropped the ball.
On the other hand, they supported the overrule following instant replay of Fitz's touchdown against Ohio.
Huh, right?
Sparty No! - but a Sparty's gotta be what a Sparty's gonna be. I thought they had broken the Same Old Sparty routine of boneheaded penalties. I was wrong - SOS returns!
Is East Lansing on fire yet???? Probably some cars and couches at least?
Anyone taking bets on how many couches are burning in EL right now?
I was literally just thinking today after Dantonio went for 2 in the first that the downfall of this team would be his cocky ass "no one can touch me" attitude when making play calls...I love that he got exactly what he deserved---not going to lie though, I feel bad for that poor kid.
Is East Lansing on fire yet???? Probably some cars and couches at least?
in my mind I had written a nice post about how this team of sparties was different, how it was time to acknowledge that Dantonio can coach, and he has changed the attitude around the MSU program. How they weren't going away and would probably be our biggest challenger to future Division titles (still will be esp with their f'd up Big Ten schedule in 2013 and 2014).
Then this
I mean I'm really starting to believe we are back and MSU is back to being 'thats why your Michigan State'.
why my Michigan State is what? Ugh.
State's dirty play all year has caught up with them. Karma is a bitch
Also, I'm calling complete bullshit that Sam the Eagle called for the punt block. He's just protecting his player. It's a good gesture but it doesn't make him any less of a turd.
I see others are thinking the same thing. I would not want to be in EL tonight (or ever really for that matter)
The difference between Sparty and Michigan is that Michigan fans can be unbiased when we need to. Sparty got jobbed by the refs tonight, on that bogus call. But, Sparty won the first meeting on pure luck, and Wisconsin won this one on something very similar. At first I thought Wisconsin didn't play well, then I realized Wisconsin really isn't very good, especially on defense. Sparty is good on D, no doubt, and looked great on O against a very bad Wisconsin D. Keshawn Martin is LEGIT, and I'm glad Cunningham is gone.
I don't want this Championship game at an indoor, pro venue. Something about roses indoors doesn't feel right.
I don't see what was bogus about the call. Dude ran into the kicker. It was a 5 yarder, not a 15 yarder. Legit call.
Do you really think that wasn't a legitimate running into the kicker penalty?
Kid dove. Bigger problem is that they call it like they MUST.CALL.PENALTY. He wouldn't have gone down without diving. Those plays should draw an unsportsmanlike flag. Two flags cancel each other out and replay down.
Totally legitimite. Guy runs into kicker, it's an automatic penalty. That gets called 100 percent of the time.
actually, not true and this made it all the more hilarious: Oklahoma State had at least 3 running into the/roughing the kicker penalties and only one was called.
This was the absolute definition of Sparty No!!
Disagree. What happened in this game will get called 100% of the time, and a Sparty fan I was watching it with agreed. Bad way to end the game for them, but schadenfreude for us!
I don't know what to tell you because it went uncalled twice in the OSU/OU game.
So you can disagree, but you'd be wrong.
2 40 left, if you don't get it you've got to hope you stop them and they kick a field goal with a minute thirty left. Instead, you punt, and just hope you get them 3 and out. Amazing.
In good field position, with a great return, and lots of time, against a defense he's shredded, just needing to get into FG range.
Now thinking you need a punt block in that situation....
The best part is they lose almost their entire offense for when we play them next year.
Great success. High five!!!
They lose most of their passing attack, with Cousins, Cunningham, Martin, Nichol, and even Linthicum all moving on. They return all 3 backs and 4 of 5 starting OL, but the OL had some issues this year.
(Partly anticipated by Eve_of_the_rivalry above) was the fact that prior to this the announcers just couldn't shut up about the "riverboat gambler" D'Antonio. "Does that look like the face of a riverboat gambler?" blah blah. After he went for two. After he did the roll out and pass on fourth and short, etc. etc.
Well, there's a reason why more people aren't riverboat gamblers. Sometimes when you take chances it will blow up in your face. The two point conversion worked, the punt block failed in the way that punt block attempts often do. The cautious play would have been to trust his offence, which had been moving the ball and had scored a lot of points. Tell your special teams players not to go near the punter under any circumstances. He rolled the dice, and learned why riverboat gamblers so often end up broke.
That. Was. Hilarious. After Wisconsin spends 58.5 minutes shooting themselves in the foot with sloppy play and terrible defense, Sparty manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The fact that there was any Spartan within 10 feet of the punter is a sure sign that Dantonio is an idiot. They didn't need a punt block, and the only focus of that play should have been getting the ball back into the hands of their offense that had moved the ball on Wisconsin all day long. Dantonio is a fucking arrogant prick, and got what he and his team deserved.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=313370127
Video plays there that shows the penalty.
People complaining about it don't have a leg to stand on (HA!). Running into the kicker is a zero-tolerence penalty. You run into the kicker without touching the ball, it's a penalty. If you're lucky it's 5 instead of 15 but it's always something. Non-negotiable.
MSU is an irrelevant program!! GO BLUE!!!
"roughing" the kicker. so apropos. Rather Hall's on DEFCON 5.
Thank God for that Sparty loss. I'm not sure I could have handled any more of Mark D smugly proclaiming that "times have changed." Not so fast, my friend. Looking forward to seeing Michigan back where they belong in years to come under Hoke.
Yes - D'Antonio looked very proud after that 2 point conversion succeeded. And then, subsequent in time, he fell. I have this weird feeling that there's a saying in there somewhere.
The luck finally ran out on those criminals from EL hahaha. We wolverines get the last laugh as usual. Little brother, the dream is over lol. Dantonio can cry me a fucking river! SPARTY NOOOOO!!!
I wouldn't want to be a sofa in east Lansing tonight.
That's was an incredibly hard loss and it couldn't have happened to a better team. This one will sting in EL for a long time.
I wonder if Sparty has a fancy name for their punt block, ala Little Giant? If not, maybe for the bowl game they can call it "Wilted Rose."
The winner against Wisky last time was "The Rocket." Perhaps this one was "The Challenger?"
option for funny, but disturbing.
Even for Sparty fans. That is straight SEC type BS, maybe worse.
Well, to be fair to Dantonio (not that he deserves it), the Wisky kicker put on an Oscar-winning performance. I agree the penalty had to be called, but the punter was not hit hard enough to go down in legit fashion.
The punter was legitimately hit, and that will get called all the time.
and that the penalty is always going to be called. But if you think the punter was hit hard enough to legitimately fall down, you need to watch the replay a few more times. He purposely pulled up one leg as he spun around and then fell down like an 8-year old acting like he got shot while playing war out in the front yard. The penalty would have been called regardless, but his acting job was frosting on the cake. I hope a Michigan punter in the same situation would be able to do as well.
It should never have come to that—Sparty was an idiot going for the punt block in the first place. The most important thing was to just get the ball back; they were playing with fire by trying to block the punt, and they got burned. No sympathies from me.
Yeah, but I think it's pointless for Dantonio to complain about a flop when he probably coaches his own punter to do the same in the same situation. I'd think any good punter in the country would've done the same thing - heads up play to sell it to the refs.
Eh, it was totally legit. He touched the kickers outstretched leg. That will get a flag everytime, no matter the acting. If you dont want a penalty, dont go after the kick.
Above all else, Sparty needed the ball back. Had they gotten it, there was plenty of time on the clock, and they'd been just killing Wisky on those quick passes to the outside WRs. All they needed was a field goal to send the game into OT.
That was the same lamebrain thing that cost us in the 2009 Purdue game; late in the game we needed the ball back; instead, GERG calls for the punt block, predictably we ran into their kicker, enabling PU to keep their drive alive and seal our doom.
Sparty has never Spartied quite so hard as they Spartied tonight.
They got what they deserve...Karma is a bitch....
Protective services are in EL right now watching #9... haha poor fella, he's gonna get lynched.
