Sparty deal with Nike: $34 million over 10 years
Signed last summer. I guess all the walmart wolverines they like to talk about are worth some actual money, maybe they should get some of their own.

This is another testament to the power of yes, the Michigan brand. If it was all about football and b-ball success recently, you would not see this huge discrepency in fee.
They sell a lot of NIKE at Walmart - Sparty

I could care less about MSU's brand, image, or program. Just want to beat them on the field.
well go head then, care less.
I don't see the point of this. You might have a coworker you dont like, but do you make fun of them because they signed a smaller contract than you? Seems to me in football we should be silent about MSU until we get back to beating them often. This thread is kind of the epitome of what we rail on Sparty for. As Woodson said "they do the talking, we do the walking" I like to stick to that style.
Do I need to make another "can a crocodile swallow..." thread?
Mark Mangino, Chris Christie, pre Subway diet Jared????
I posted it because it's summer, and since M's deal is in the news this week, a sparty contract is in the news today. Pretty simple. My post was about the difference in brand appeal, and I'm not known for anti-sparty, little brother, comments or threads.
True, I did just see horseshoes on ESPN.
They need to bring back Aussie rules football
Top level rugby is fun to watch
Kind of like Jabril Peppers, be quiet until you do something!

I miss the days when we could rail on Sparty and not have to worry about our own fans complaining about it. Just because we haven't beaten them much lately doesn't mean we should never be able to poke fun at them. It's a rivalry. Everyone is so fucking worried about upsetting the big bad Spartan fanbase. You have the guy who originally posted this defending why he made fun of MSU and their tiny apparel deal. That shouldn't happen. If it were a post that said "hurr durr little brother spartina sucks lol lol lol" them maybe I could see a point. Our apparel deal has been talked about a bunch on here and this is a story about our instate rival's deal with the same company. Fuck Sparty. They win more than most every other school in the last 5 years and still no one gives a shit about them. Harbaugh has been here for 6 months and is recruiting better than them, Dantonio gets asked regularly about Michigan and Harbaugh, and their fans have convinced themselves Harbaugh isn't a good coach because they are deathly afraid of Michigan being good again. I love that we can have threads about them being irrelevant in a time when they are one of the better programs in the nation. This does not take away from the fact that we need to win more in the field.
It is the same thing as Hoke apologizing for the stake in the ground.
Yep. It's a scaredy little wimp mentality. Enjoying making fun of them can exist in the same universe as valuing beating them on the field.
Agreed, beat Sparty on the field, who cares about beating them to the bank
How about we do both? We wont negotiate another apparel deal for another 11-15 years. This is a nice step towards rubbing salt in their wound the next time we beat them.
if our deal is split roughly 50/50 between $$$ and unis/gear, does this mean that schools like MSU (or for that matter, all schools not in the top 10-15 in terms of populrity) are (1) using less unis/gear; or (2) using the same amount of unis/gear, but buying it from their sponsor? The former does not seem to compute, unless a school like Michigan is getting tons of stuff they really don't need; the latter seems nuts to me -- they give you a few million in cash, which you turn around and give back to them for the unis/gear.
Apologize if this ihas been discussed or represents my own ignorance, but would appreciate some insight on this.
The 50/50 split for Michigan is unique - according to the article State gets about a 1:5 cash to gear ratio. This leaves State with about half as much money for gear. My guess is that the difference is made up in one of two ways: either State ends up buying some gear or their non-revenue sports get a lot less extra swag.
about how we/Texas/OSU/etc value the "gear." I'm sure we're savvy about this, but there sure seems to be a lot of room for Nike/Adidas/UA to give us lots of retail-priced stuff that doesn't represent either the cost of the supplier or what we would actually pay for this stuff in a free market. The only other answer is that we have way, way better gear than the rest of the crowd.
Has anyone seen a list of Nike's contracts by most money? I'd think $3.4 million per year is still in the company's top ten payouts.
They would be 7th on this list of Nike deals, although they're actually 9th now since ours and U-TN's deal are bigger

Just beat them on the field.

That 1-2 of these schools below will be leaving Nike soon. I REALLY CAN SEE One or Two of them packing up and heading over to Adidas and or UA for the cash! It's gonna happen as those schools w throw serious Jack Cash at these schools to get them. Some below are not in as good of financial shape as we are in either. Watch
USC
Texas
LSU
ALABAMA
OSU
SPARTY
GEORGIA
FSU

OT: So, with the Jordan brand for basketball, I've been wondering if Nike will give Michigan water sports some of its Hurley brand surfing and swimwear (for practice, general-purpose, etc).
Focus more on revenue sharing and less guaranteed cash in these deals. That way, when schools have successful years (like MSU), the school makes more?
Spartry got a deal from Nike! They definetly sold high.
Way to go Sparty!
Victory is more important.

Glad you cleared that up, being that these things are mutually exclusive and all.
Keep worrying about apparel. Why does it matter? Of course MSU isn't going to get the same deal as UM! We all know that...stuff like this just comes across as drawing straws or something. I could see this on RCMB.

It matters because some fans want to beat rivals at everything. On the field, on the court, in the stands, classroom, everywhere. Every detail exists as a potential bragging point to hang over a rival's head.
Well if you didn't know Michigan is a bigger name and an actual brand compared to MSU, you're either under 21, or haven't been paying attention for the past 40 years.

Keep worrying about others worrying about apparel. Can you see the point of that?
most obvious barometer for these apparel deals, although media impressions are a big factor.
Michigan is consistently in the top 5 despite the RR and Hoke struggles. Despite the recent run of success in football and two decades in basketball, MSU falls way short in generating merchandise sales.
https://www.clc.com/News/Annual-Rankings-2013-14.aspx
Why isn't Michigan State on that list anywhere?
along with USC. Also noted a few other P5 schools are missing like Iowa, Indiana, Mississippi State and NC State.
Hard to believe the NCAA would allow schools to evade their licensing control, but it's possible.
These are the CLC numbers. USC doesn't use CLC (nor will Texas after this year, I believe) and maybe those others don't either. The list has nothing to do with the NCAA.
There's a "clients" tab on the left. MSU isn't a client.
So the question remains: where would these "non-clients" land in the merchandise rankings?
And they done release there sales, I've heard this before from them.
Maybe if Dantonio would crack a smile once in a while and quit crying Sparty could get more money.
Surprise this wasn't reported last year that MSU renewed there contract with Nike good for Sparty.
There is a reason people like wearing Michigan gear over Sparty. You want to associate yourself with the best. Rarely do you see people wearing shirts that say Iraq, but you do see lots of people wearing USA shirts.
Absolutely hate the term "Michigan brand." Yuck. Thanks Dave.
