Spartan(s) you love

Submitted by Maize Rage on

If you are a Michigander, there is likely someone you know and love, who is also a Spartan.

Mine are my dad, sister, cousin, brother in law, and four friends.

Who are yours?

Colin. Im still pissed he didn't get into Michigan. He didn't exactly fit in at state (although he had a good time he's just not a bro bro)

I hope someone knocks his helmet off tomorrow so that I can yell my usual:  "Our pets heads are falling off!" and listen to crickets as my in-laws try to figure out what I mean.  Good, clean fun.

Total class act: He was on the Scott Van Pelt show last week on ESPN radio and had quite possibly the best college football player interview I've ever heard. He had nothing but good to say about Denard (I was expecting something like "Greg Jones is gunna destroy him, DUR!!!!"). Plus his summary of the rivalry was pretty dead on and made me laugh a little:

(SVP asked him about Michigan being down the last two years does that detract from their victories?)

Well, wether they're good or not we'll take whatever we can get, anytime we beat them we'll take it

Paraphrased, but you get the picture... great guy, Hope he hits Cam Gordon between the numbers on every drive though.

Cousins was on Jim Rome's radio show yesterday, and Rome asked him about Denard. He had nothing but good things to say about him, even saying that Denard doesn't get the credit he deserves for his passing. By Spartan standards, he seemed like a good guy.

I love many people who have been affiliated with that place, but the part of them that retains the taint of Sparty has no place in my affection. In other words,  I block it out, but that doesn't mean it doesn't fester a bit. I also am sensitive to the fact that I care WAAAAYYYY too much about this game, and will be irrationally devastated if Michigan loses.

I love my best friend Chip enough that he has one of my four tickets for the game tomorrow

Which, will be awesome if we win, because he has to ride home with me and two other Wolverines; but then there's the other scenario......

Ok, ok. My grandparents used to be big on State, but that was because they had no strong affiliation one way or the other. After learning I was going to UM they became huge Michigan fans. Outside of that, nobody I know (that I care for) is a Spartan fan. I'm not sure if this is coincidence or not...

Steve Smith, of MSU basketball fame, for donating $2.5 million dollars for the Clara Bell Smith Student Athlete Academic Center at MSU.

It's GREAT to see athletes give back to the universities that helped them along.

Tom.  Well, not LOVE, but he's a cool, smart guy.  Made up for his time at MSU by getting a Master's at Cornell.

I actually only know one other person from MSU who turned out to be a total d*ck.  We had a lot of mutual friends and he needed a roommate when he moved out to Chicago.  I was a year out of college and looking to leave my ghetto for a more decent abode.  Worked it out so we'd get a 2 BR apt together, but at the last minute (literally, within 2 weeks of when we were supposed to move in), he totally flaked out and said he wasn't moving in with me after all.  I ended up homeless for a month with my stuff in storage for a month.  I basically lived out of my suitcase at various friends' houses for that month (friends who all lived at home with their parents - home-cooked meals, at least!).

So after the Chris Perry game in '03, I was walking back to a friends dorm and there were a bunch of drunk Spartans half passed out on a picnic table. They were kinda angry but I decided to press the issue so I started talking shit like I tend to. This dude got up from like ten feet away and chucked something at me kinda fast but because I am so sweet I caught it. It was a disposable camera. My quick wit came into play and I realized I had a golden opportunity in my hands. So I wound up the camera and took a picture of a bunch of depressed Spartans after yet another loss. Best part is that it was their camera. I love those Spartans.

Magic and Mateen, and no one else.

Well, technically Kirk Gibsonn, too -- but I've just never even thought about him as a Spartan, so the cognitive dissonance is minimized.

I loved watching Gibby play baseball.  He played it with the energy and excitement and need-to-win that he had from college football.  There was a big difference between having 10 games and needing to win them all and 162 games, but he played like he needed to win them all.

I remember watching a game on TV where he was in the booth doing color, and the Tigers won it in extra innings.  You could actually hear him jumping up and down in the booth with excitement.  He is a fan, which made his color commentary better for fans in a lot of ways I think.

I don't know if there are any I love, but I've always admired Kirk Gibson.

I think the MSU grad who cleans our house twice a week is pretty cool too.

... derrick mason. Of all the spartan receivers who went into the NFL he was one of the few who didn't waste his talent (rodgers, plax, muhammed)

He's the best goalie in the world right now and got the USA to within an inch of a gold medal.

I hated him when he was at MSU and was (wrongly) convinced that he would not be as good at the next level.
