is a serious blow to the meme of Dantonio as lax disciplinarian.
Spartans' Max Bullough Suspended
I figured he would have to some pretty terrible for Dantonio to suspend him. So we'll see what the problem was and where the memes go from here...
When the details come out, we will most likely learn that max did something a coach 100% has to suspend him for. I'm sure dantonio had no choice
When it comes to off the field issues?
He allows his players to be goons on the field, but I don't recall off the field situations that he's skimpped at least not like Meyer and UF.
That said, I really don't pay attention to MSU so you could be 100% correct.
of ski masks, back in '09, and the re-instatement of Glenn Winston to MSU football in fall '09 after serving jail time in an assault on MSU hockey player A.J. Sturges. I recall there was at least some gloating over UM moral superiority at the time.
The Bucknuts pushing of the Lewan story has led me to a site called Washtenawwatchdogs.com, with which I have no previous encounters. This site is reporting, in a tendentious tone perhaps inseparable from the investigative reporting mindset, on an alleged cover-up of an incident involving Brendan Gibbons and, tangentally, Taylor Lewan, from fall 2009. A sinking feeling of retroactively established moral equivalency, then and now, rears its ugly head.
This has been a tiring season. Perhaps, after cheering for yet another freshman QB in the Copper Bowl, it will be a good time to hibernate for a bit.
Nah. Dantonio runs a decent ship and all, but those Spartans are like most college teams in that they get in their fair share of police blotters but (I'm guessing) rarely to the level that they need to suspend a guy for his last game.
Saving myself from the RCMB, anyone know the word on what he did?
Only rumors with nothing substantial.
Not worth mentioning here until more comes out.
Dantonio made it clear that they are done talking about it and this was supposedly not a very recent thing to happen. The coaches knew this was coming before the trip and the players tweets and accounts dont reference it so a likely gag order has been imposed so the time of this release was by design not just when they made the decision.
Other interesting tidbits :
His birthday was just a few days ago
He had been talking with Larry Caper on twitter about getting him rose bowl award gear (not sure if allowed per ncaa)
Looks to be something that only he did, as nobody else had to stay home.
Not going to speculate butvI am interested to see the "next question" presser
There isn't record of his arrest in East Lansing.
He had been trolling/challenging the nay sayers on twitter, even going as far as offering to meet up so he could explain things a little better.
This is a huge loss for the Spartans. It's not just his tackles; he is essentially their QB on defense, relaying the plays and making sure everyone is lined up correctly.
If anyone is interested, the team has at least gotten as far as an official statement on the issue, some of which is quoted here - LINK
Dantonio is quoted in it - it was released a little after midnight Eastern Time:
"It is extremely disappointing for all parties involved. We will stay focused and close ranks as we prepare for Stanford on January 1 in the Rose Bowl. Max will forever remain a Spartan and valued member in this team's achievements."
He also mentions that there will be no further comment on the issue, so I have to guess that any information on what precisely happened will not come from official channels.
Congrats Max, you had an opportunity to
- Play in the Rose Bowl
- Be a starting MLB against a smashmouth offense (aka the most important defender on the field)
- Make 20 tackles in one game against Stanford's RBs
- Do all of this in front of 100 NFL scounts interested to see your skillset and peg you as a mid-round sleeper
dude, your mgopoints fluctuate like the stock market.
Even during their best season in decades, MSU still can't stop slamming their proverbial balls in the door.
Tough loss, obviously. He was going to be a major party in doing Stanford's riding attack.
Tough loss for Sparty. Kid was pretty damn good! I picked Stanford anyways!
I'm sure Sparty will just plug someone else in to this spot and be just fine, can't believe I just said that.
I was on TOC and they were talking about a couple of options, but nobody sounded particularly excited about those prospects. This is a veteran, older team, but the guys behind them aren't all studs. It will be interesting to see if Ed Davis (who sounds like the next guy up) will be able to match that production. I'm guessing not.
What an idiot
Feldman confirms off twitter too.
on the Bullough family vacation to LA
Tough break for the kid and MSU. Maybe now Kyler Elsworth #41 will get some PT. He's a great kid and former undefeated state wrestling champion. Time for others to step up now.
I think, as we expect to get some of the same courtesy (though it rarely happens that way), I have to give Dantonio credit here. Obviously we don't know the details, but it would be much easier to say "we'll let this play out and make a decision when the time is right", and have that decision be after the Rose Bowl. Honestly, that wouldn't be a hard thing to do, but he didn't.
While this could be something he did, in fact, have to do, I'm just reminded of other circumstances when it being something a coach had to do didn't get met with immediate push back until someone above forced their hand (this goes for Dantonio himself as well). He didn't seem to wait for that time.
Total conjecture here, but I would guess it is some NCAA violation. While I applaud Dantonio, he does exactly have a track record as a disciplinarian. See: Grant Winston. I bet he didn't have a choice.
I first thought of Curtis Enis.
I agree this is more likely an eligiblity issue than 'internal' discipline. If so, Dantonio cannot run the risk of playing an ineligible player. Time will tell.
Depending on the circumstances of the incident, it may have been a case of there being no room for ambiguity. This coach doesn't have a history of simmply doing the right thing.
That's totally true. Dantonio definitely acted appropriately. I do wonder, though, if his hand was pushed by either someone in the program or the nature of the incident. It will be interesting to see what comes out; I'm guessing it is an NCAA-level violation that was a non-starter in terms of waiting.
Well first glimpse of the MSU D without Bullough. I'm interested to see it.
he just got caught doing something he has been doing all along.
but, you know, if he didn't actually hurt another person, maybe this stuff shouldn't be taken so seriously.
Ironic... this is the first time I wouldn't be totally heart broken if Sparty were to win their bowl game.
Sounds eerily familiar to what got Adam Stenavich suspended for the '04 Rose Bowl... Kid goes home for a break, goes out, makes a bad decision. Just amazing it seems to have happened within hours of the plane leaving for Pasadena.
We don't really know the timing of what he did or the decision to not let him play. It could be something days old that the coaching staff just decided to wait a day or two, perhaps more, to announce. At this point, there had to be an announcement because reporters would start to notice he wasn't with the team, but I could see even if the decision had been made on Christmas Eve to wait until the wee hours after Christmas to release the statement.
Going to need to update that commercial of theirs showing his family tree....
He was the accomplice in the Lewan assault. There's no other explanation.
Alternative explanation: Bullough held up a "Burn the Coach" sign and the East Lansing Police nabbed him.
If that were true I would feel sorry for the poor bastard that crossed those two guys!
MSU was already going to have a tough battle trying to beat Stanford. That just got a whole lot tougher. If I'm not mistaken, he was their team captain and leading tackler.
Oh well, sucks for them. I'd rather watch Stanford put a pounding on them, anyway. If Michigan is having a down year, I want my rivals to go down in flames with me.
Must be some serious shit if Mr. Zero Tolerance (sit out a series) suspends him for a Rose Bowl game.
He probably killed a Hooker and showed up at Dantonio's hotel room with the body, drunk, and wearing Michigan gear.
just got caught doing something he, and most other college students, do all the time.
the timing sucks for them, but oh well.
I didn't think they suspended guys for masturbating furiously while his roommate was in the bathroom...
I don't feel sorry for anyone who drives impaired. It's not a mistake. It's a concious decision that risks the lives of others. And, yes, I was a kid in college once, but I was also an adult and knew not to do this crap.
Bullough isn't 16. He's an adult. I'm tired of the kid-who-made-a-mistake crap. Mix driving with alcohol, pay the consequences, and I won't feel sorry for you. That includes Michigan players.
Are you such an MSU insider that has info re: Bullough and a drinking offense? Please Link cuz people that speculate and pass it off as fact are scum bags that gossip and spread false rumers. Your right Bullough isn't 16 and since you know he has an alcohol related offense feel free to stand on your high horse and crucify him with your very high moral standards.
U mad bro?
^^^^^^ Someone got coal in their stocking.
Are you saying Bullough got suspended for riding his horse high? I highly doubt it
Wow crazy news. This has to be a huge loss for their D. Hopefully Stanford can take advantage.
Academic dishonesty or DUI I bet. What else would get you suspended so quickly?
I thought everybody kills people? Kills you, kills me.
Egregious, not recent and about to break or Zero Toerance would have buried it.
My guess is NCAA violation or he flunked out not-- just a DUI. Sparty doesnt sit kids unless it's not optional. Not this kid and not at this moment.
