Spartans' Max Bullough Suspended
It boggles the mind, how some of these guys can go their entire career without incident and then screw up right before the final game of their collegiate career.
Understand your point, but Bullough was arrested and suspended as a freshman because he and another teamate assaulted a guy in a Colorado bar.
Does anyone recall?
Don't you remember what your senior year in college was like?
I don't.
Remember his incident in Aspen a few years back?
would you mind filling me in, sir?
No, I actually didn't recall any trouble. I knew he was an Academic All-American.
I guess he has made at least two poor decisions in his playing days:
everyone knows the french are assholes.
That's pretty rough for Sparty and incredibly stupid on Bullough's part. I was almost kind of pulling for them to win...
I wouldn't mind seeing it on line...in images...being worn by people in a third world country somewhere.
I think that's usually what happens to the loser's pre-made swag.
Edit: The comment I responded to is no longer there. Hmm...did someone make an unscheduled trip to Bolivia?
What happened in Aspen?
He forgot to wear his ski mask.
Well played sir, well played.. +1 to you and happy holidays.
Aspen? Mmmmm California!
I haven't really seen any projections yet. Where is he expected to be drafted? Tough loss for Sparty as far as the rose bowl goes. Solid player who always seemed to be around the ball. Id say like our JMFR, but not as quick.
I'd like to say he's more like Desmond Morgan...but better.
Ryan plays a lot of DE and still makes plays.
Comparing him to JMFR isn't really fair, they're two different positions. Ryan's style almost certainly wouldn't be as effective inside.
As far as his draft status, I think the general feel was that he was an early 3rd day kind of guy.
Wouldn't expect that of him. The one time I wanted t Sparty to win, too.
You knows Sparty did it on purpose. A lot of Michigan fans want them to win and they just can't have that. So boom, there goes Max
why do we want them to win?? I'm glad they beat ohio st - somebody had to stop that streak and keep them out of the NC game. now that that's over... I would rather that they didn't win the rose bowl.
so we pooled $$ as a family to get him two tickets to Pasadena. Basically I just want them to win so he will have a good time.
Because I'd rather not see the B1G lose a 4th straight Rose Bowl.
This will definitely hurt, especially with Stanford's offense being the ground and pound run game
Sparty or not, I feel bad for the kid. Having to sit out a rose bowl after working through college to get there is going to be a tough regret to leave in the past.
You feel bad for him? Look I'm the same exact age as him and I understand that there's consequences when you make horrible decisions. If I'm in the same boat as him and going to one of the biggest games in my school history, I am not going to make whatever bad decision he did. He made his choices and now he has to live with them. Whatever he did was bad enough to warrant a suspension from Dantonio. I don't know how you could feel bad for him.
horrible decision. It will make it easier for us to judge for ourselves.
I have no idea what the cause of this is, but I'm guessing he made some sort of bad decision and now has to live with the consequences. Please enlighten me about any situation you can think of where a player would be suspended over something he didn't have the power to control or make a decision on.
I'm not going to speculate, there are plenty of others here who seem to relish the misfortunes of others. Of course he might have had control over his decision - but I've lived long enough to realize that things can go from fun to "oh shit" in a heartbeat. I'll wait for a detail or two before I judge, if that is okay with you.
No judgement here either. People make bad decisions. I make bad decisions, though never ones bad enough that I would be suspended from an athletic team. But my point is, you have to live with your decisions. I'm totally fine with waiting for details before we "judge," though I won't be judging either way. Everyone is human and makes errors/mistakes. The only thing I'm saying is that we all have to live with those errors/mistakes, and sometimes those things cause us to misout on great opportunities in life.
You called a poster out because he stated that he felt sorry for Bullough - he did not say the punishment was wrong or not fitting. That is what I am taking issue with. If Dantonio suspended him, cleary there was good reason. That does not mean that I cannot feel some empathy for his situation - pending details, of course.
Now, comments about ski masks are a horse of a different color - feel free to pile on, because he/they left themselves open to that.
This is true and I'm not trying to argue with anyone here. I'll just say this, he feels bad because Bullough is being punished. But the reason he is being punished is because he violated rules. He has been there 4 years and he's a captain. He should know the rules and it's his fault that he broke them. He shouldn't even put himself in any situation where he could break the rules. So I can't feel bad for a guy that is being punished for something he did to himself, aka breaking rules he's known for 4 years. Rules that, as a captain, he should have followed better than his other teammates.
ZZZZZzzzzzz.........
say he felt bad because he was punished. He feels bad for Bullough because his career is ending this way. Totally different. And for someone about Bullough's age, your tone is a tad sanctimonious.

What? I'm sorry, I've gotten by being a rational person just fine. I've never been arrested because I've never done something dumb enough to get arrested. I've never put myself in a position where I have to make a choice between two bad options.
I haven't been perfect, and I have regrets, but to excuse poor decisions as "human nature" is insulting to everyone who does act rationally.
Wow, not quite the rational response. First, where did I say that non-rational behavior = law breaking behavior? Or dumb behavior? In fact, the opposite is often true. Its often non-rational behavior (such as intuition) that results in very positive outcomes. So, how was I excusing bad behavior? He should face consequences. Its not about that. Its about understanding that people make mistakes, but must also learn from them. Try to be a bit more rational in your thinking.
The fact is, if you think you have gotten by by being nothing but rational, you are living a fantasy. There are piles and piles of psychological and economic research on the topic. Thousdands of careers have been made our of research into the circumstances and reasons humans do not act rationally. That people normally act non-rationally is without debate. Its not about having regrets, breaking laws, being dumb, or negative consequences. But it can be. But it can also be about being very compassionate, thoughtful, giving, when its not rational to do so. Try some of that before giving an ignorant response.
Response moved.
If you don't have things you regret from your past, good on you. I do, and I can empathize with how he's gonna feel about it a couple years down the road.
Well I guess I'm just less sympathetic. I don't have any regrets, but that's because I think through things that I am going to do before I do them. Making poor decisions is what usually leads to regrets. I highly doubt someone forced him to do something against his will, in which case I would feel bad for him.
You have to think about the big pictures in life when you make decisions, and if he couldn't step back and think, "how will this affect me being on Big Ten football team?" Then that's just too bad.
Dude, totally uncalled for. MLive-level response. You can disagree respectfully.
Sometimes it's called for.
It's one thing to say "I don't have any regrets because no matter what I wanted it at the time and whatever happened happened" and another thing to say "I don't have any regrets because I always think things through and make a decision tree everytime".
No one asked for moral superiority and anecodtal evidence doesn't change what the other poster was saying.
"fuck off Dad" is not needed. Even if it is deserved. You can get the same point across without the sophmoric attitude.
My apologies if you think I'm trying to be morally superior. I am simply stating that it's not hard to think things through. I'm not saying it's a anything related to alcohol, but many have speculated it is. So let's say they're correct. If the biggest game of my life is about to happen do I drink and then go a drive a vehicle? No, and it's not even a hard decision.
I'm not saying I sit and make out a life plan every time I am faced with a choice. But, most things are pretty easily cut and dry. Drink and try to operate something? No. That simple, I've never done it and I absolutely never will. I don't see how things like this are even hard for people to decide.
I am just saying that in life choices are usually pretty easy. When they are not, sometimes you should think them through. Luckily for me, I have no regrets thus far in life. That doesn't make me perfect, it doesn't make me always right, and it certainly doesn't make me morally superior. I'm sure at some point I will make a decision that I regret, but my point was so far in life I haven't. And that has more to do with the fact that I don't put myself in bad situations as much as possible.
So I can't feel bad for someone who was kicked off of his football team right before the biggest game of his life, because he clearly did make some kind of horrid decision. It was his choice whatever it was. All I am trying to get across if that in his situation, I would be extra careful about what I was doing for a few weeks. Nothing more, nothing less.
The internet is full of douchebaggery, but this post ranks pretty high up there for what I have seen. If you spoke like that way to me in person, you would finall have something in life to regret. lol I kid I kid,,not really
Well apparently I'm not coming off as intended. I don't necessarily care that you think I'm a douche. I must say though that I have no idea how any of this comes off as me being offensive to the poster. I'm just stating my viewpoint, not knocking his. I said I can't feel sorry for the guy, I never said the poster was wrong for feeling bad for him. He can feel however he wants, I just wondered why because I don't, so I was sincerely wondering.
Edit: If you're talking about my response to the poster who told me to F OFF because of my viewpoint, then I understand a little better. I didn't mean it in a bad way. Just as a matter of fact. And I also don't necessarily appreciate people taking me to F OFF, and I think I responded in a much better way than I could have. I don't go telling people to F OFF just because they have a certain opinion.
Dad? Actually there's a great chance that you're older than me. I'm a Senior in college. I just understand that you don't make stupid decisions with no consequences.
The thing is, humans dont think this way the majority of the time. It is a fiction we love to impose on people whose actions may or have harmed us, or as a way to feel superior to those people. And to make up for our own shortcomings. Only in rare circumstances are we actually rational actors, in which we have perfect informaiton and the time to assess all outcomes. So perhaps you should try to deal more with reality than fantasy.
Plus, I would say for people in general, the rare times are the times we make mistakes and make poor decisions. The vast majority of times we do act rationally. It's that 1 out of 100 time where we make a mistake or make a bad decision.

Its not about having regrets, breaking laws, being dumb, or negative consequences. But it can be. But it can also be about being very compassionate, thoughtful, giving, when its not rational to do so. Try some of that before giving an ignorant response.
Ignorant?
I spoke of law-breaking or dumb behavior because that's the context of this discussion.
Apparently, you were speaking much more broadly - I apologize for not being able to pick that up from the context of your post. Perhaps I was ignorant in that regard, but given the context I think it is understandable.
Rational in the context of being giving/compassionate/thoughtful etc is a different topic than what we are talking about here. And even then, I'd argue in favor of rationality.
It may be rational to not pay off my student loans too fast and instead invest into a Roth IRA because my student loans compound at 4% interest and the stock market has a history of 7% return. However, I've made the financially less-shrewd move to pay off my student loans at an accelerated pace instead of put that money in the stock market, which is the better move mathematically. I guess you would argue this is not a rational decision. I think it is a rational decision because I am aware of the consequences and more heavily weigh the emotional stress of getting rid of my student loans. Is that being irrational? Probably a matter of opinion.
"Whatever he did was bad enough to warrant a suspension from Dantonio. "
This is the key. Dantonio would gloss over anything minor (as he has done many times in the past) so this has to be something substantial.
other people consider substantial. I doubt he had a choice (which is your point I think - it just needs to be said I think here.) The cred doesn't flow from Dantonio's character as much as his lack of it. Dantonio would likely not take action if it was something he could get away with given his past.
In addition this is a bowl game, the last game of a senior career and Max is a singular talent that is the heart of that defense (along with all american DB paly.) Like you said - all things point to major screw up.
Agreed. What makes me feel so bad for the kid is his family's ties to the program. This Rose bowl has to mean so much to that family, as it does for the rest of the fan base.
However, kudos to Mark Dantonio for having the balls to suspend him. His duty is to help these boys become men, and actions have consequences. He has done a lot of stuff recently to really make me like him.
This is true, but I guess his brother does get to play, so at least someone in his family will get to Pasadena.
That said, this feels like a situation Dantonio needed to sit him for. It wasn't missing training table or a meeting, I'm guessing. Though as was pointed out on TOC, no police reports could be found, so it must have been an internal issue.
Sparty gonna Spart
How does this happen before the biggest game of Max career. Wow!
I don't know - but thanks for asking me.
It's not like Max is vital for that defense to work. /s
#SpartansWill do something incredibly stupid before the game they played their whole lives to get to.
I feel bad for the guy who's waited his entire life to play in this game. On the other hand, I find it hilarious that they lost the best player on the entire team six days before their biggest game in 25 years because he did something stupid.
RCMB meltdown much lighter than expected.
Must be the holiday cheer.
Then bargaining.
Too soon for anger.
Not really. Plenty of heartache.
it sucks.
Must have been a serious mistake for Dantonio to boot him.
I hate the Spartans....but i feel bad for them now. They busted ass to get there....and now a good player fucks up....
That sucks, strange that it happens to a team captain. Also, glass houses.
Out loud
Damn, sucks for them. I always thought Max Bullough was a squeaky clean guy and a hell of a LB. Quite unexpected before their biggest game in 30 years.
He ran from the cops just a few years ago in college.
?
As noted earlier, because he forgot his ski mask and didn't want to be Id'ed.
By in all seriousness, because he ran from some cops in Aspen after a (pretty rough) fight.
But I was asking why the poster had the opinion of being shocked and surprised and never saw it coming.
Does he know the kid? Is it because he's a legacy kid from a football family, a well-off white kid that plays hard-nosed football?
Just wondering what sparked that train of thought. Clearly it wasn't his criminal history because he's already gotten in trouble.
Sorry. Didn't catch the context.
Merry Christmas Max!
Well this now makes me think of Lewan. If Sparty is going to suspend one of if not their best players before a huge game are we not going to do the same? I have no idea if Lewan screwed up of course but if there are serious charges which there appear to be then shouldn't he also sit? Of course this sucks and I don't want either player to miss their final games but who knows a little lax discipline now can lead to terrible consequences for them and others down the road if they think it is ok to behave unacceptably.
Now of course I am far from perfect as is every other human and i feel for these kids but if you break the rules and are caught you should face the consequences.
Yes, because you should assume guilty until proven innocent right? Lewan came out and said he had nothing to do with it. The OSU fans story sounds bogus, and many people in the area say they can back Lewan up. So until we know what Bullough did, it's not fair to compare. You're basically saying that if tomorrow I release a story saying ten guys from the Michigan team beat me up, they should automatically be suspended. Forget actually going through the legal system and checking to see if Lewan was actually involved.
Innocent until proven guilty is a fantastic principle and one that i believe in though even in those cases where somebody is accused of a crime and facing a trial that person may be held in jail, "suspended" if you will, while a court determines that person's innocence.
I, like you, have no idea if either player is innocent or guilty but what is indisputable is that both players have now had repeated incidents of suspicious behavior.
Anyway I hope that both players, if guilty, learn from their mistakes and have successful careers in the NFL and elsewhere in their lives.
Being held in jail pending charges is not like a suspension. It is done to guarantee a court appearance. No action is necessary to assure an NCAA athlete continues to show up on campus. They already have incentive to do so. A suspension would not help in that regard. there really is no comparison to be made there.
Well, in Bullough's case he ran from some cops, was arrested, and pleaded out. Lewan was not charged and, at best, was investigated. I know he had some issue earlier on in his career, but when your coach suspends you before the biggest game in the last, what, 50 years in your school's history AND you were arrested and convicted in another state, that to me rises above this potential non-story about Lewan.
All that said, I'm not going to argue about the morality of college kids getting into fights or breaking rules. Every team has guys who do, and the vast majority of their teammates don't do anything wrong and pass through the school successfully. It sucks for the MSU and its fans that they will have to play Stanford without one of their leaders, but Hoke has suspended important players for big games before (Fitz against Alabama, Stonum and Hagerup for whole seasons as well as individual games), and I'm guessing if there was sufficient fire behind the Lewan smoke he'd be sitting as well. But this idea that UM is not addressing real, punishable acts because they want to win the f'king Copper Bowl and finish 8-5 is silly. I commend Dantonio for doing what he did, though I'm guessing Bullough had to do something pretty bad for it to come to this.
I'm not sure how you commend a guy for taking action and then go on to see it must have been pretty bad. If it was bad enough Dantonio had no choice.
As others have noted, Dantonio could have pulled one of those "let's wait and see" approaches that drags it out just long enough for the game to be played. I mean, Tressel basically did that and it blew up in his face, but lots of other coaches have dragged stuff on long enough. I'm guessing this involves something rather cut-and-dry, but LOTS of coaches have found ways to slow-play those offenses to benefit them. I'm just giving him kudos for addressing it early and moving on.
We have no idea whether a "let's wait and see" approach was at all realistic in this case.
and that is where the devil lives. Coaches gonna coach. Best leave this to the professionals. Dantonio is not the gold standard here. Players and teams respond differently but no matter - fans and rival fans will always second guess.
Until we know (and we may never know) what Bullough did, it's too early to praise or diss either the kid or his coach or make comparisons to other players and coaches. Even the saner State fans (the non RCMB types) seem to acknowledge that it must be something serious. Someone on TOC even speculated that it might be academic in nature. Suppose he's ineligible to play in the bowl? We just don't know, so it's way too early to pass judgment.
Anyone accused must be guilty!
Show me real facts of an incident and I'd agree with you. A Bucknuts retelling doesn't hold much water.
You have no idea if Lewan screwed up, but you want him suspended. Okay.
Look at FSU's situation...imagine if this guy was running the show. No Heisman or National Championship.
And Winston was being accused (but not charged) with MUCH more serious allegations.
Someone is going to make a joke, but imagine if that was Gardner and Michigan's season. We'd all be IRATE if we lost out on a Heisman and an undefeated national championship because of an allegation that didn't draw any charges.
If it's that easy to get a player suspended, next year I'm creating 22 accounts and going after every OSU starter with flase allegations. They'll have to be suspended, because it must be true if MGoBlog is saying it about OSU players (with no link, proof, etc.)
You can't suspend Lewan for the bowl game beause you don't know if the charges are correct or bogus. If Hoke suspends Lewan and he's innocent then Hoke suspended Lewan for doing nothing and that is worse than if he plays and did infact commit the assault because it can be made up with down the road in jail time and NFL draft status.
I feel for the kid, but I feel bad for exactly zero of the MSU fans.
I'm the opposite. Bullough did something dumb enough to get him suspended. MSU fans have been waiting a generation to play in the Rose Bowl and one of their leaders screwed up enough to significantly undermine those efforts.
His decision making was extremely selfish in light of what is in front of him and his team.
From my perch now, I shake my head at myself when I played. I am reminded of my foolishness.
I feel bad for him. Always seemed like a very good guy. I know he was very smart. Stunned this is how he ended his career
is a serious blow to the meme of Dantonio as lax disciplinarian.
I figured he would have to some pretty terrible for Dantonio to suspend him. So we'll see what the problem was and where the memes go from here...
When the details come out, we will most likely learn that max did something a coach 100% has to suspend him for. I'm sure dantonio had no choice
When it comes to off the field issues?
He allows his players to be goons on the field, but I don't recall off the field situations that he's skimpped at least not like Meyer and UF.
That said, I really don't pay attention to MSU so you could be 100% correct.
of ski masks, back in '09, and the re-instatement of Glenn Winston to MSU football in fall '09 after serving jail time in an assault on MSU hockey player A.J. Sturges. I recall there was at least some gloating over UM moral superiority at the time.
The Bucknuts pushing of the Lewan story has led me to a site called Washtenawwatchdogs.com, with which I have no previous encounters. This site is reporting, in a tendentious tone perhaps inseparable from the investigative reporting mindset, on an alleged cover-up of an incident involving Brendan Gibbons and, tangentally, Taylor Lewan, from fall 2009. A sinking feeling of retroactively established moral equivalency, then and now, rears its ugly head.
This has been a tiring season. Perhaps, after cheering for yet another freshman QB in the Copper Bowl, it will be a good time to hibernate for a bit.
Nah. Dantonio runs a decent ship and all, but those Spartans are like most college teams in that they get in their fair share of police blotters but (I'm guessing) rarely to the level that they need to suspend a guy for his last game.
Saving myself from the RCMB, anyone know the word on what he did?
Only rumors with nothing substantial.
Not worth mentioning here until more comes out.
Dantonio made it clear that they are done talking about it and this was supposedly not a very recent thing to happen. The coaches knew this was coming before the trip and the players tweets and accounts dont reference it so a likely gag order has been imposed so the time of this release was by design not just when they made the decision.
Other interesting tidbits :
His birthday was just a few days ago
He had been talking with Larry Caper on twitter about getting him rose bowl award gear (not sure if allowed per ncaa)
Looks to be something that only he did, as nobody else had to stay home.
Not going to speculate butvI am interested to see the "next question" presser
There isn't record of his arrest in East Lansing.
He had been trolling/challenging the nay sayers on twitter, even going as far as offering to meet up so he could explain things a little better.
This is a huge loss for the Spartans. It's not just his tackles; he is essentially their QB on defense, relaying the plays and making sure everyone is lined up correctly.
If anyone is interested, the team has at least gotten as far as an official statement on the issue, some of which is quoted here - LINK
Dantonio is quoted in it - it was released a little after midnight Eastern Time:
"It is extremely disappointing for all parties involved. We will stay focused and close ranks as we prepare for Stanford on January 1 in the Rose Bowl. Max will forever remain a Spartan and valued member in this team's achievements."
He also mentions that there will be no further comment on the issue, so I have to guess that any information on what precisely happened will not come from official channels.
Congrats Max, you had an opportunity to
- Play in the Rose Bowl
- Be a starting MLB against a smashmouth offense (aka the most important defender on the field)
- Make 20 tackles in one game against Stanford's RBs
- Do all of this in front of 100 NFL scounts interested to see your skillset and peg you as a mid-round sleeper
dude, your mgopoints fluctuate like the stock market.
Even during their best season in decades, MSU still can't stop slamming their proverbial balls in the door.
Tough loss, obviously. He was going to be a major party in doing Stanford's riding attack.
Tough loss for Sparty. Kid was pretty damn good! I picked Stanford anyways!
I'm sure Sparty will just plug someone else in to this spot and be just fine, can't believe I just said that.
I was on TOC and they were talking about a couple of options, but nobody sounded particularly excited about those prospects. This is a veteran, older team, but the guys behind them aren't all studs. It will be interesting to see if Ed Davis (who sounds like the next guy up) will be able to match that production. I'm guessing not.
What an idiot
Feldman confirms off twitter too.
on the Bullough family vacation to LA
Tough break for the kid and MSU. Maybe now Kyler Elsworth #41 will get some PT. He's a great kid and former undefeated state wrestling champion. Time for others to step up now.
I think, as we expect to get some of the same courtesy (though it rarely happens that way), I have to give Dantonio credit here. Obviously we don't know the details, but it would be much easier to say "we'll let this play out and make a decision when the time is right", and have that decision be after the Rose Bowl. Honestly, that wouldn't be a hard thing to do, but he didn't.
While this could be something he did, in fact, have to do, I'm just reminded of other circumstances when it being something a coach had to do didn't get met with immediate push back until someone above forced their hand (this goes for Dantonio himself as well). He didn't seem to wait for that time.
Total conjecture here, but I would guess it is some NCAA violation. While I applaud Dantonio, he does exactly have a track record as a disciplinarian. See: Grant Winston. I bet he didn't have a choice.
I first thought of Curtis Enis.
I agree this is more likely an eligiblity issue than 'internal' discipline. If so, Dantonio cannot run the risk of playing an ineligible player. Time will tell.
Depending on the circumstances of the incident, it may have been a case of there being no room for ambiguity. This coach doesn't have a history of simmply doing the right thing.
That's totally true. Dantonio definitely acted appropriately. I do wonder, though, if his hand was pushed by either someone in the program or the nature of the incident. It will be interesting to see what comes out; I'm guessing it is an NCAA-level violation that was a non-starter in terms of waiting.
Well first glimpse of the MSU D without Bullough. I'm interested to see it.
he just got caught doing something he has been doing all along.
but, you know, if he didn't actually hurt another person, maybe this stuff shouldn't be taken so seriously.
Ironic... this is the first time I wouldn't be totally heart broken if Sparty were to win their bowl game.
Sounds eerily familiar to what got Adam Stenavich suspended for the '04 Rose Bowl... Kid goes home for a break, goes out, makes a bad decision. Just amazing it seems to have happened within hours of the plane leaving for Pasadena.
We don't really know the timing of what he did or the decision to not let him play. It could be something days old that the coaching staff just decided to wait a day or two, perhaps more, to announce. At this point, there had to be an announcement because reporters would start to notice he wasn't with the team, but I could see even if the decision had been made on Christmas Eve to wait until the wee hours after Christmas to release the statement.
Going to need to update that commercial of theirs showing his family tree....
He was the accomplice in the Lewan assault. There's no other explanation.
(obvs. /s)
Alternative explanation: Bullough held up a "Burn the Coach" sign and the East Lansing Police nabbed him.
If that were true I would feel sorry for the poor bastard that crossed those two guys!
MSU was already going to have a tough battle trying to beat Stanford. That just got a whole lot tougher. If I'm not mistaken, he was their team captain and leading tackler.
Oh well, sucks for them. I'd rather watch Stanford put a pounding on them, anyway. If Michigan is having a down year, I want my rivals to go down in flames with me.
Must be some serious shit if Mr. Zero Tolerance (sit out a series) suspends him for a Rose Bowl game.
He probably killed a Hooker and showed up at Dantonio's hotel room with the body, drunk, and wearing Michigan gear.
#RememberTheFive
just got caught doing something he, and most other college students, do all the time.
the timing sucks for them, but oh well.
I didn't think they suspended guys for masturbating furiously while his roommate was in the bathroom...
I don't feel sorry for anyone who drives impaired. It's not a mistake. It's a concious decision that risks the lives of others. And, yes, I was a kid in college once, but I was also an adult and knew not to do this crap.
Bullough isn't 16. He's an adult. I'm tired of the kid-who-made-a-mistake crap. Mix driving with alcohol, pay the consequences, and I won't feel sorry for you. That includes Michigan players.
Are you such an MSU insider that has info re: Bullough and a drinking offense? Please Link cuz people that speculate and pass it off as fact are scum bags that gossip and spread false rumers. Your right Bullough isn't 16 and since you know he has an alcohol related offense feel free to stand on your high horse and crucify him with your very high moral standards.
U mad bro?
^^^^^^ Someone got coal in their stocking.
Are you saying Bullough got suspended for riding his horse high? I highly doubt it
Wow crazy news. This has to be a huge loss for their D. Hopefully Stanford can take advantage.
Academic dishonesty or DUI I bet. What else would get you suspended so quickly?
Just saying.
I thought everybody kills people? Kills you, kills me.
Egregious, not recent and about to break or Zero Toerance would have buried it.
My guess is NCAA violation or he flunked out not-- just a DUI. Sparty doesnt sit kids unless it's not optional. Not this kid and not at this moment.

What sort of NCAA violation? Like taking money from an agent?
I can't imagine any of the last ten or so coaches at MSU making this decision. They have always been the team that lets these things slide - at least until after the "big game". I begrudgingly must have to admit they might now get more respect from me than OSU.
Seems unlikely Dantonio had any choice.
I just noticed the story on CBS sportsline and clicked on it to read it and it said story has been removed... so maybe they are changing their mind. Or maybe they need additional time to spin it a different way.
Say what you will but as much as I detest Dantonio as a rival coach I sure as hell respect and admire the way he handled this situation. He not only suspended his team captain and QB of his defense he suspended a name that is absolutely synonomis with Michigan State football. Dantonio is clearly sending a very strong message to not only his team but he entire State program that NOBODY is above the rules. I also really like that he made the announcement directly before the team plane left and was able to keep it completely silent on socail media - so far I have seen nothing even speculating what may have led to this so he's been judge, jury & executioner and done so completely controlling the media narrative.
that Dantonio had no choice. I agree with the posters guessing it's an NCAA issue.
You don't know the circumstances, so you don't know if Dantonio is being noble or his hand was forced. If you're familiar with his history, you'd know it was probably the second.
His hand was forced. Dantonio is absolutely not the kind of guy to do the right thing of his own volition. Also let's face it, who knows any Sparty fan that would not CRUCIFY Dantonio for suspending Bullough unless he had no choice. A good friend of mine is a huge a Sparty fan and he even said that even if it was a DUI that you have to let the legal process play out and play him.
Good. The less good players they have for the Rose Bowl, the better. I want Stanford to beat the living shit out of MSU.
Yep will be nice to see Sparty eat humble pie. Can't stand the "root for the conference" mentality. That's SEC crap.
this site (and thank you mods for letting speak my, for the most part, mind), I'm going to take a chance here. You two sound like the proverbial little brother - regardless of the regionality (not an Oxford word, I know).
Yeah, MSU fans were probably pulling for Texas....whenever that was. Welcome to the JLS era.
The truth is, if you want UofM to get national respect, (as in a BCS bowl for the losing team in the BigTen champs game, or a MNC contender for the BigTen champ), and one way or another it will eventually happen for UofM - YOU NEED A STRONG BIGTEN BOWL GAME SHOWCASE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS.
That's all. You may not like it, but OSU and MSU wins mean the BigTen aren't pretenders. Have some faith in your program. UofM will be back in the mix - one way or another
The other bowls (Minnesota) don't really count. WE (just talking about the bowling season) need to beat the media handjob teams.
At least he's a RS SR.
Honestly kind of tired of all the Bullough talk all year. Great player, but did he not beat the shit out of some kid I Colorado on spring break a few years ago as well?
Lol
Academic All-America
Pride of the Bullough legacy
Anchor of the nation's best defense
and captain of the team playing in the school's biggest football game in 47 years
Now he'll have to walk the streets for the rest of his life - the rest of his LIFE - knowing he had to watch from the sidelines in street clothes.
Ouch.
Not even the sidelines. He wasn't allowed to make the trip.
Kirk cousins is very sad that max bullough will have to walk the streets knowing this.
was hoping MSU had a chance against Stanford.. This does not help the Big Ten at all. Based on MSU'S complete lack of enforcement of any rules in past incidents this must be serious....
Max: Mom and Dad... I know you already dropped 10 grand on the trip to california... but I'm not travelling with the team.. I committed a violation of team rules and plan on watching the game from the Buffalo Wild Wings in E.L. with a few friends. Sorry to let you down.
Your Son -Max
you have to feel for the person. BUT, I hate the Sparties so the line should change I guess lol I wonder if his replacement is a Sophmore or younger and will he be able to play like a SR especially one who could be all big ten in his last game. I doubt it, but thats no excuse at least it isn't for a 1st or 2nd year Michigan player. (They must play at an all B1G level or they just aren't being coached up as well as Dantonio and his staff can) S/ ickening
We have to be the only fan base in the country that is harder on our own players and coaches than on our rivals' players and coaches. The amount of "Damn, I feel bad for him" and "Dantonio does these things right" blows my mind, especially when we don't know what Bullough did to get this. With Dantonio's history and the magnitude of this game, it was probably pretty serious. I feel like our guys getting suspended for a big game is usually met with a "screw him - what an idiot."
One of my New Years wishes will be for a little less self-loathing from Michigan fans.
High quality investigative reporting by the traditional media on this. Articles have the MSU statement and literally no other details. Pathetic.
For a senior captain that seems to be a guy that hasn't gotten into trouble that is really surprising.
No information but I can guess it was something like a bar fight. He had a 2010 incident in Colorado, and Dantonio has a policy (or had one at Cincy that it appears he carried over to MSU) of excusing one mistake and coming down very hard if you repeat it. That's all I have.
Dantonio also believes in keeping everything his players do a secret, which stinks of the Tressel "Brotherhood" crap--hardly the first time this has been leveled at him.
Tough blow for MSU. I respected Bullough a lot, both for his play and his Molk-ian attitude toward the press. I know that Mark Dantonio is a terrible human being, but have never heard that Bullough is and am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I know more.
But I am from his hometown and the rumor mill up there (Traverse City) is that he got picked up with a DUI possibly on Chirstmas Eve. It was also something to note that Aaron Burbridge had a b-day on the 23rd and a few guys went out to celebrate. So to what it is, we still odn't know but it seems like it is in the direction of either a DUI (OUI) or some sort of physical altercation, however if it was the latter, it would seem like more people would be involved and it would be public.
Just the rumor mill. Again, not confirmed, but if that is the case it will come out in the next couple days.
Either way, this breaks the legacy of the Bullough's playing in the Rose Bowl, his Grandpa and Dad both played in it. His brother (Riley) will get to, and his younger brother, (not yet enrolled at MSU) will have a chance. He was within hours of making his dream a reality and he blew it with a STUPID decision. This is something he is going to regret his entire life.
as if Bullough gave Dantonio no wiggle room here. Whatever he did it is something major. My hunch is that Max had contact with an agent.
vs. Stanford's power game. But what can you do?
MSU hasn't been to the Rose Bowl since 1988 and should have gone way back in 1978, if it weren't for Sparty no recruiting violations.
So your team finally gets there and when you want it the most, and when your team needs you the most, reality sets in, ending it all with an "I fucked up at the Rose Bowl!" t-shirt.
wouldn't have hurt them as much as losing their MLB. Imagine Michigan losing David Harris or Jarrett Irons going into our bowl game?
Sparty's good-news karma may have run out 1 week early.
JT Floyd got suspended for "team rules" - which, based on his lengthy apology, sounded like a failed drug test. His announcement came on December 17th for a NY day bowl.
We'll have to see if Bullough ever issues an apology. I expect him to do so. I do like this guy's play, even though he played for the wrong color uniform.
NCAA rules, on their web site, do indicate that a failed drug test, including test for street drugs, results in a 1-yr suspension. In Max's case, his last bowl game.
So, those who are wondering if Dantonio had to suspend him IF he failed a required NCAA drug test...then answer is yes.
Expect to know more if Max issues an apology this week.
A PED?
JT Floyd supposedly smoked weed if that's what you're asking.
Something like grades would be an internal matter. This sucks for Sparty and for the B1G who I'm thinking, with DG's and this situation, may only win 3 bowl games.
DUI according to the following
http://3minutedrill.com/2013/12/26/breaking-spartans-lb-max-bulloughs-su...
wasn't throwing a turd at me. I clearly said anything positive was a sickening sarcastic thing to say and not to mention saying I hate the Sparies I am also never hard on UM players I have always been as fare as I can be with them.
Goddammit! It's 2014 and the stupid about DUI just never stops does it?
And oh look! Joy! December 31st/January 1st celebrations coming right up!!!
People out drinking don't always make good decisions? I am shocked that there is gambling in this establishment.
In all seriousness, things aren't perfect in regards to DUI and they never will be. They are getting better and hopefully will continue to do so, but expecting people to magically not be shitheads is perhaps not productive.
Would there be special drug testing prior to the Rose Bowl?
Or maybe too much stretching time?
"I think it was more shock when the team found out; everyone deals with their own demons, so to say,'' [Kyler] Elsworth said at the Disneyland press conference on Thursday afternoon. "Right after we found out (Wednesday), our team had a little meeting and said: `Let's not dwell on it, let's replace him, it will be tough, but let's do what we can and don't worry about what we can't handle.'"

Sounds like one too many failed drug tests to me.
someone on RCMB said he was tested at the bowl and failed the substances test.
don't think Dantonio did it based on team rules...he suspended him because his hand was forced. and i wouldnt be surprised if he is somehow re-instated.
He never even left Michigan with the team, so there's no way he was tested at the bowl site.
I heard he "crapped" on the season.
This is bad news for the Big 10, 12, 14 conference. As an alum and ardent fan, how could I want Stanford to win the Rose Bowl. Sparty can make the State of Michigan proud. Whatever happened to their linebacker, it had to be serious and a no brainer to suspend him. I hope it wasn't some family gets tickets thing or something like having spoke or signed an agent.
GO BLUE TONIGHT and good luck to Sparty in the Rose Bowl!
That guy is football. Coulda been a MLB on any nearly any team. And any University would have loved having Max as their MLB. Had a Spielman like play, tenacity, understanding, and love of the game. It's sad that he lost his chance, by his own doing, to play in a Rose Bowl. For him, and his family. He'll regret this for the rest of his life. I am sure his extended family was so proud watching him play this year. Must be heartbroken.
Whatever happened, I hope he gets help if necessary, learns, and moves on and forward.
There is a pretty serious allegation floating around today about the reason behind Bullough's suspension. If its true then its absolutely devastating to Bullough and the Michigan State football program.
I heard he tested positive for Adderal, which might be considered a PED. Heard that Bullough ws unaware that Adderol was a banned substance and was surprised about the whole thing. Lots of Adderol abuse going on at college campuses.
Truly sadened by the depths we accuse yet never look into our own house. All schools have situations that determin suspension, time out or just not starting a player for the first series. U of M has been there. Most of us screwed up in college, it's part of growing up, learning and adjusting. We started a convicted Felon and there was very little outcry from the fan base. We didnt suspend a player from getting arrested for peeing off a porch, and we certainly didn't repremand a coach for almost the same thing. Let's not get "Hollier then Thou". Dantonio is no different then 90% of other head coaches, Brady included.
