For those not wanting to click..."U-M put two satellites into space this morning – M-Cubed and RAX. They hitched a ride on a NASA rocket and satellite. U-M was one of three universities across the nation to send satellites into space on this rocket"

This is actually the second RAX satellite to go up into space. And major props to S3FL (Student Space Systems Fabrication Lab and something to look into for current and future Michigan students) for a tremendous job on these and other equally ambitious projects.

Anyone know if Simon (Pete) Worden and Alfred Worden are related?  Both born in Michigan.  Both grads.  Both military officers.  But I cannot find a link to the two on Google.

I was stationed at Falcon AFB when Pete was the base commander.  Neat guy to talk to but  not necessarily cut out for military service.  I got to work one of his special projects too... a spacecraft sent to the dark side of the moon.

At any rate, that time in the AF, pilot career fields were overmanned.  The AF sent a lot of the banked pilots to Space Command.  When Pete was the commander, he replaced the daily playing of "Retreat" base-wide with the Star Wars death march.  That  lack of respect for customs and courtesies really rubbed people the wrong way.  Especially the banked pilots and/or those who had been shot at or lost buddies in combat.

he's the head of NASA Ames and has basically become NASA's go-to-guy for small satellite development. He was Gen Lord's right hand guy at AF Space Command for quirky and spooky space stuff... there's a lot of really important capability that we have now that  Worden was directly responsible for.

Funny story about Worden. When he was pushing for the AF to worry about small satellites from foreign nations, he tried to prove his point by making a picosat in his garage in C-Springs then bicycling it out to Vandenberg. And yes, the pilot mafia in the AFwas NOT a fan of Pete Worden.
