Really thought he would stay one more year, but the best of luck to him in the pros!

Of course, I wish GRIII the best of luck in his pro career.  At the same time, the kid just doesn't look like an NBA player yet.  I don't understand what is making these kids declare early, only to risk a second round draft position or no draft position.  Sure, money's good but it's good for such a short time.  I know, been discussed to death already.  I just don't get it, at all.

This would be somewhat disappointing, if only because Robinson could be a star if he stuck around. Instead, he'll leave college as a fairly good player without much of a legacy. Kind of like Jamal Crawford, who played well but didn't really turn into a Michigan fan favorite.

In terms of "legacy", I agree that both somewhat underachieved, but GRIII hit far more big shots at UM than Jamal, and will have a prominent place on any highlight reel for two different teams that accomplished a lot; Jamal didn't have that. Thus, I think GRIII easily made more of a mark and will be remembered fondly by most in a couple years (while many don't even remember Jamal at all, he was here for such a short time for a team that didn't really do anything).

Beyond that, as you probably know, Crawford had eligiblilty issues that GRIII did not, so that affected Crawford's tenure at Michigan. More importantly, I think, is Crawford was a better player. He was a Top 10 pick and he's justified it by being a vet who regular scores 15pts + a game. Not an all-star, but a very valuable sixth man.

GRIII has as much talent, but there is no way he will be a Top 10 pick, so I'm less sure about this decision. Heck, I agree with many others who think there's a good chance he won't be a 1st round pick at all (though I could certainly see some established team, e.g., San Antonio, taking a late 1st rd flyer on GRIII b/c of his pedigree, talent and good citizenship).

In any case, best to GRIII. Hope it works out and he has a 15-year career like Jamal.

I don't think that being a star is what Robinson seeks. Belien has said before that he's incredibly unselfish and always does what's best for the team. There were many times this year when I would scream at the TV for him to take it to the rim and be more aggressive, but I don't think that's what he was coached to do. It's a shame that we won't get to really see him take that next step in a Michigan uniform, but hopefully we can whatch him do it in the NBA. He's achieved a lot as a member of this program and he must feel that it's time for him to take the next step in his career.

"I don't think that being a star is what Robinson seeks. Belien has said before that he's incredibly unselfish and always does what's best for the team. "

Lebron James has made a pretty good career out of doing those things. Just because you do what's best for the team doesn't mean you can't be a star. A star can just as easily be a guy who will take big shots, grab rebounds, dish out some assists, play some defense, and have a solid all-around game.

P.S. I'm not saying that GRIII is as good as Lebron James or wants to be him. I'm simply saying that there's more than one way to become a star, not just the Carmelo Anthony way.

terrible decision by GR3. He isn't ready at all. It meshes with the report from Sam Webb that he was regreting his decision to come back for a sophomore year. Oh well, have to wish him luck at the next level.

That regret shouldn't be read as anything negative about the team, the staff, or the school; it was apparent to anyone closely following the team that GRIII had been passed by both Stauskas and Levert as offensive contributors, and when McGary went down the two-post offense (which I had always taken to be a move by Beilein to keep GRIII happy with his role) went away for good and GRIII had to go back to the 4 spot, which wasn't his best position.

As a consequence his draft stock has dropped; there's no question about it. He struggled a bit. It is not unreasonable for a person in that position to be a good teammate and still think that perhaps they would have been better off making the jump earlier.

So from that standpoint this doesn't surprise me at all.

It's really hard to blame GR3 for feeling some sort of regret. His draft stock slipped, he was promised time at the 3 but played exclusively at the 4. The man had to fight downlow with guys like Randle and Stokes. How much better would he look if he played the 3 in college? How more better would he look if he had a veteran pg that took advantage of this slashing and dunking abilities?

Glen has an NBA skillset. He can run, jump, slash and finish with contact and hit the mid range jumper. Getting drafted in the later rounds and being placed on a team that will utilize those skills and find a niche role for him will be beneficial.

I know a lot of people were hard on Glen and to an extent I can understand it. However, he was never placed in a situation to shine. Our offense is meant for guards to drive and shoot. Glen is more of a slasher and finisher. He was an outstanding teammate that did whatever was asked of him to win games, that can not be denied. I loved having him on our team and best of luck in the NBA>

Last year, absolutely it would've had an impact.

However, McGary is a lot closer with Spike, Dakich and the bench mob than many people realize.

And if they both were pro, they weren't playing together anyway.

If this was last year, I think McGary leaves because at the time he didn't have "best/best/BEST" friends that compared to his relationship with GRIII.

That isn't the case now. I think McGary stays and it has nothing to do with GRIII leaving/staying.

This is disappointing, but I can understand the logic: Yes, GRIII could use another year to really refine his game... but if something goes awry and he doesn't improve significantly (including, say, an injury that limits his game for half the season), he won't get drafted at all. And then, even if his game does blossom, he would face a huge uphill battle to ever make an Association roster.

So he may be choosing to get out while there is still a lot of "athletic potential" attached to his name.

And if that's the case, I don't blame him. Even if he does improve quite a bit, he would still probably be the third option behind Levert (for sure) and McGary (if he comes back) next season.

Sometimes you have to make the leap. College will be there.

I assume this has a lot to do with no playing the 4. I think it's kind of funny that he tried to frame it as if he wasn't given the opportunities to show his perimeter skills, when really, he just doesn't want to spend effort on defense guarding big guys. I get not wanting to do it, but pretending as if you were deprived of the chance to play your game on offense is bullshit considering that he was basically used as a guard offensively.

Not really sure what he will offer an NBA team at this point...

A 3 with very limited dribble-drive skills and a very inconsistent shot... Hmmm

Congrats to Glenn, but I feel like next year could have been his break-out year.

I expect him to perform well in pre-draft workouts and work his way up to mid to late first round (17 or lower). Which will be good because he could go to a decent to good team.

If true, I'm going to miss watching GR3 play.  He was a big part of our last two runs.  I am feeling optimistic about the future when a lot of his minutes will probably go towards Zak Irvin.  Michigan basketball is in good hands.  This probably pushes him into the starting lineup if Nik is leaning towards the NBA.

We can fill GRIII's spot on the court we just need Zak to step up and chatman to play well and we will be fine. The only player I worry about going is Mcgary, we need his post game.

Obviously there's tremendous value to staying in school but it's hard to begrudge someone for taking advantage of the opportunity to make millions of dollars. Best to luck to GRIII. I think he has the potential to be a very good player eventually.

Good for him. His decision is probably tied to where he might play next season. Lets say Horford and McGary were returning and Donnal is emerging by all reports, he's would see very limited to no minutes at the 4. But with Horford gone, he stuck playing the 4 more than his preferred 3 spot (which is his natural position). Now people around here hate on this kid because he doesn't produce like he should but he sacrificed his game more than any major contributor for the team.

cbs650

April 14th, 2014 at 2:57 PM ^

I don't think McGary is returning. but lets say he did return, his back is a major issue and an injury would put Michigan is same position it was this year. Look Michigan had Horford, Morgan, Biefeld and Donnal who they redshirted even after McGary was injured. You lose Morgan and Horford McGary come back and u have him with Donnal and Beifeld. You bring in one legit big in Doyle and two tweeners in Chatman and Wilson. Do you think that Beilein will play freshman (he didn't take Donnals redshirt even when needed) inside when he can just put Glenn there? he didn't do it last year. Wilson is smaller than what Donnal was.

Mr. Yost

April 14th, 2014 at 1:53 PM ^

Looks like next year's lineup is set without knowing what the freshman are going to do.

PG: Walton (30) / Albrecht (10)
SG: LeVert (35) / Walton (5)
SF: Irvin (35) / Chatman (5)
F: Donnal (30) / Chatman (10)
PF: McGary (35) / Beilfeldt (5)

That lineup is WAY too thin a C/PF (not that GRIII really changes much), and I'm not sure McGary can play 35mpg with the way he plays, that's a lot of minutes for a post player that relies a lot on energy and effort.

With that said, I think all three freshman end up playing 4 or 5 in this offense. I think Chatman will be a 4, Wilson a 4/5 guy and Doyle a 5.

So really it could come down to whether Irvin is ready to play big minutes. If he's not, I think you see more Albrecht/Walton/LeVert than people are anticipating.

Mr. Yost

April 14th, 2014 at 1:58 PM ^

Where do you see that? Link?

Because I think McGary IS coming back. People close to the program will tell you that the friendship thing with GRIII is overblown this year. Last year, abolutely, but McGary bonded with the "bench mob" this year and he's just as close to those guys (now) than he is to GRIII.

Where do you see McGary isn't coming back?

Or are you just making shit up to make yourself feel better like when Horford left and everyone said McGary WAS coming back so Horford left?
