The Sound of Football
I have been having Simon and Garfunkel's song the Sound of Silence running thru my head for a couple of weeks now, not sure why. Last night I had a restless night and the song kept coming at me but the words were different.
Today I wrote them down, the tune is the same so just use that as a guide. I hope this can take it out of my head. I know it isn't perfect but it needed to come out.
Hello Michigan, my old friend
I've come to cheer for you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sounds of football
In linemen’s dreams we ran it well
Come hi’gh water or fiery hell
We beat them underneath the lights
This year we didn’t win the fight
When the ulnar nerve was hit by the huskers just right
That ruined that night
And touched the sound of football
And in the glaring light I saw
Hundred thousand people, maybe more
People cheering without shouting
Students paying without watching
Bloggers writing words about things that I don’t care
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of football
"Fools", said I, "You do not know
Off season like a cancer grows
Victors valiant that I might hear
Conquering hero’s that I might cheer
But my words, like schadenfreude fell
And echoed
In the wells of football
And Jim Delany go’t paid
By league that he had made
And the blog flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the blog said, "The words of the coaches are written on the stadium walls
And Shembechler hall”
And whispered in the sounds of football

I'm getting up there in age but I'll always have that scene in Old School where WF get hit in the neck with the tranc dart when I hear that song.

Don't worry man. This economy will eventually turn around and you'll find a job again. Then you'll be able to fill your days with something meaningful again.

To me, football sounds like a bunch of dudes running into eachother and making grunting noises as they do it. Literally, thats what is sounds like.

Benjamin: Where did you do it?
Mrs. Robinson: In his car.
Benjamin: What kind of car was it?
Mrs. Robinson: Come on now.
Benjamin: No, I really want to know.
Mrs. Robinson: A Ford.
Benjamin: Goddamn, that's great. So old Elaine Robinson got started in a Ford.

Mr. Braddock: Ben, this whole idea sounds pretty half-baked.
Benjamin: Oh, it's not. It's completely baked.
