Sorta CS: Coaching interview question
With rumors swirling about interviews of potential coaches, I was asked a question and don't have the answer. I could look it up in the NCAA rules, but I've drank too uch since this has started and have lost the will to care. Nonetheless, here is my question........ Does a school have to grant permission for another school to talk to their coach about an opening?

but not required

I don't think they "have to" but it's kind of common courtesy; an "unwritten rule" if you will.

The NCAA doesn't govern that sort of thing, so there's no specific requirement. It's just considered common courtesy.

In Miles's case, yes - his LSU contract requires the school's permission for him to speak with anyone else.

His contract might, but he still doesn't HAVE to. What would the school do if he didn't ask permission and signed a contract with Michigan? All they could do is enforce the buyout.

Relevant section from LM's contract:
C. . Unless notice has been given to COACH by the UNIVERSITY of
COACH's termination pursuant to Section 13 of this Contract, neither COACH nor his agent shall, under any circumstances, discuss or negotiate directly or indirectly his prospective employment with any other institution of higher education or professional athletic team without giving at least 24 hours prior written notice to the Athletics Director
If anyone is interested in reading through what a big-time coaching contract looks like, his is on file here: http://i.usatoday.net/sports/graphics/2009/coaches-contracts/pdf/miles_lsu.pdf
There's some interesting stuff in there... And if nothing else, it could give you a 15 minute reprieve from hitting F5.

Is Palasky suggesting we ask OSU if it's ok to interview Tressel?

If they deny it, can you still contact the coach?

F* them, take the coach! ASAP so I can sleep for the first time since the Gator Bowl please

I always wondered how some of these interviews work. What if Harbaugh had been interested in going to Michigan? Would we still go through with an interview, even if both parties are sold? What do you ask? Do you ask guys why they think they're qualified, even if it's obvious whether or not they are?

But in some cases, if you talk to the coach without permission, then steal the coach, and that stolen coach has breached his employment contract, then the aggrieved school might sue you for tortious interference with contract. I believe this happened with the Tennessee Titans suing Lane Kiffin. I'm not sure what the result of that case was.

give a shit about the topic really. I'm upvoting this because I really like your post.
I celebrate, in particular, this line:
I could look it up in the NCAA rules, but I've drank too uch since this has started and have lost the will to care.
I've been there man. I may or may not be there now. One of the few times I'll raise a drink to such a misspelling, which really captures where so many of us find ourselves on certain evenings, or in certain circumstances.
