Somewhat OT: The Ups and Downs of Fair Weather Fandom

Submitted by michman79 on

Disclaimer: This is not my opinion.

January 2008: Michigan hires RR. A progressive offense-minded coach to bring his high-powered offense and restore Michigan to national prominence.

Spring Game 2008: Uh Oh, we don't have a QB. We will probably only win 8 games now. That's ok, it's his first year.

Utah Game: Oh, so close.

Toledo: Uh oh.

Minnesota: Shrug.

OSU: Thank God that is over.

Post Season: Rodriguez is known for year 2 turnarounds...plus, the cupboard wass bare. We should improve next year.

August 2009: We will have much better QB play. I hope we can beat Western. That will be the barometer.

September: Allegations?! This is the last thing we need right now.

ND: Tate for Heisman! We will easily win at least 9 games. Who would have thought he would get this team turned around.

Indiana: Deep breath, we escaped. Good to know we are now good enough to play bad and win.

MSU: This guy doesn;t understand the rivalry.

Iowa: This guy can;t win on the road. Tate looks lieka freshman and can;t play if it is less than 60 degress outside.

DSU: We're back!

PSU: GERG couldn't coach my high school JV team.

Illinois: Fire everybody now! This coaching staff stinks and these players have given up on him.

Purdue: We need to get Brian Kelly now before ND does. Cut our losses.

Chrystal Ball Scenario A:

Wiscy:Fire him!

OSU: Fire him!

December: One minor infraction, Rodriguez stays.

2010: 8-5 record with a bowl win over Arkansas.

2011: 11-2 with BCS bowl loss to LSU.

Chrystal Ball Scenario B:

2010: 6-7 record, ROdriguez fired.

2011: Michigan hires Mike Debord as head coach and brings in Matt Millen as consultant.

how short all fans' memories are, including Michigan fans. Yes, we're in a substantial collective rut right now. Things are pretty bad. In fact, I'd say they're "scream obscenities in the tunnel heading out of the stadium after The Horror, get told by a security guard to 'cool it,' and walk all the way back to North Campus just because of a need to settle down and think"-bad. Or "leave during the third quarter of the Oregon game, despite never EVER leaving a game early"-bad.

Every setback for every diehard fan is the worst sports-induced pain imaginable. I'm guilty of it too. But at a certain point everyone's gotta turn down the venom and just let it play out. (Regular sex helps.) Unless you're a bajillionaire donor, nothing you say is going to figure into the coaching process.

Two more weeks to hope for a bowl, if we don't make it,
do I jump ship? No way. Most of the urinating and moaning
is coming from the fair weather fans. Do we have a
Woodley, Woodson, Gold or Law on this D? We have one guy
performing to that level, and that's Graham. If we
just had a couple more guys like that, the results would
be a lot different. As disapointed as I am, I'm not
bailing on RR or the Team. We're going to get there.
