Something needs to be done about the helmet stickers (pic)

Submitted by Maizen on

I'll admit that when coach Harbaugh announced the return of helmet stickers I was lukewarm about the idea because a) I grew up in an era where Michigan did not wear them and b) I prefer the clean and classic look of the winged helmet.

As the season has gone on they have grown on me a bit, however it's becoming clear (just take one look at Jabrill Peppers helmet) that the criteria for the stickers is either too lax or that the stickers themselves are too big. I mean this looks ridiculous and cluttered no?

Yes, I realize life is good when this is what we have to complain about, but can we get some smaller stickers next year so our beautiful helmets don't look so busy? I don't think that's too much to ask. Perhaps something like this (EDIT: for Firstbase's idea for helmet stickers)

(A) Don't care. Harbaugh.

(B) When players earn stickers beyond the helmet's ability to carry them, I think there already is a board in the locker room that displays the additional stickers.

(C) Before reducing the sticker size, I'd simply make stickers that are worth 10 conventional stickers. Just reverse the colors on the current stickers, and make those worth ten.  That'll take care of it better than smaller stickers.

As long as players aren't receiving stickers for plays during losses Im not upset. However if they are more concerned about themselves than the team, that is an issue.

Anyone who became a fan of Michigan football circa 2005 telling me how the helmets should look are insane. The stickers are the greatest symbolic embodiment of Bo's legacy, and it always seemed they were taken away to keep Nike and then Adidas happy. Love having them back as a testament to doing things the Michigan way.

Harbaugh uses helmet stickers: everyone loves it

RR or Hoke uses them: riots ensue, end of the world.

That is our fan base for you. I'm just calling it how it is.

I hate these straw man attacks on our fan base. Our fans are loyal as hell given all that's transpired over the last decade. Even if our attendance numbers were massaged a bit to get over the 100,000 mark last year, we still were drawing at least 80-90K per week, which very few other schools could have managed in the same circumstances. (Most schools don't even draw that many, period.)

Am I the only one that sees a dog when I see these stickers, not the wolverine? I think it looks dumb. Just my opinion

I think the reason they are earning so many helmet stickers is bcuz they are competing at every level of football and school.  If everything is a competition then your going to have a lot of helmet stickers.  I love the helmet stickers but i do feel that they are going to run out of room on the helmets for some of our players lol.  I think Harbaugh gives out helmet stickers for more then just what you do on gameday also.

The problem, as many have said, is not the size of the sticker, but the number of stickers being given out. If Harbaugh insists on giving out so many stickers, the best solution is to decrease the size of the stickers. You can't change the design though -- it's a classic.

I hate to say it but I've been admiring the MSU helmet stickers from afar this season. The block 'S' ones, not the spears or whatever the other ones are. They're small and they stack nicely. Part of the problem with ours is the oblong shape so they just don't stack well.

It is the players and coaches choice. I support Harbaugh's choice to have these exact stickers and I would assume the players would feel comfortable enough to weigh in if they thought they should be imporoved or eliminated. I spend zero seconds during the games evaluating how I feel about the uniforms/helmets. You should too.

Who cares. Enough of this crap! Seriously, enough! It's always something! Just watch Michigan football, root as hard as you can, support the team and quit being fashion police/sticker critics.

Sorry to interrupt this thread, but I want to say the following: Today is an important day in America. If you are a veteran or you are the family member of a veteran, I just want to thank you for the sacrifices you and your family have made for our freedom. Without the efforts of our veterans, we could never enjoy the things we take for granted. God bless. Thank you. GO BLUE !!!

or that Harbaugh can't choose what he wants to do, but I'll just ask this question. When you look at all the other classic college football helmets (notre dame, usc, penn st, alabama), none of them employ helmet stickers, and none of them seem to have problems recruiting. Really, the only other classic helmet that features stickers are the buckeyes (maybe there is anoher exception). Taking out things like Bo's and Harbaugh's preference, tradition, motivation, reward, etc, just ask yourself what looks better, the traditional, uncluttered winged helmet (the best helmet ever), or what they're wearing now? When you have to pose arguments about the size of the stickers, perhaps the answer is more obvious than you think.

Like on a war plane or fighter jet. Everyone of those stickers is a pass breakup, huge block, 15+ yard run, great catch, etc. They motivate, create competition (healthy) from within and I think could be intimidating to opponents.
