Someone slipped Herbstreit some blue Kool-Aid
I don't really know how to take this, because although he's a buckeye, I typically think Herbstreit's take is meh, fairly objective. But it seems like he's on the kool-aid for us pretty hard against ND, while Desmond's enthusiasm is quite tempered.

I'm definitely in the camp with Howard, I was just a little surprised to see Herbie so high on Michigan after 1 game. Setting up his rivals for a fall maybe?

Herbie also said in a an interview that he likes to pick the upsets more because Corso always goes with chaulk. UConn was the underdog and if you had to pick an upset, many would have picked UConn (wrongly, however)

Did she say "1 and 3 is your record at michigan against notre dame."? What am I missing here?
September 8th, 2010 at 9:55 PM ^
She meant that his record against ND + OSU is 1-3. Dunno why she left out MSU.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:08 PM ^
I sure didn't take it that way, at all. She didn't bring up the other rivalries until after that.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:08 PM ^
As far as the national media is concerned, those are our two rivalries. MSU matters mainly to the statewide media.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:05 PM ^
I just can't believe he didn't correct her.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:32 PM ^
Let's hope Herbie is right (I think he is a B10 fan at heart). Howard is probably being more objective since he is an alum and doesn't want to come off as a Lou Holtz homer type.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:37 PM ^
Desmond is calling it like he see's it. After reading the UFR it was clear that this defense is much more suited to have better overall success then our defense last year. Offensively there is not a lot of weaknesses and not a lot of teams that are going to be able to slow down Denard Robinson. I don't think Notre Dames defense, who gave up a pretty poor touchdown run to Robert Marve is going to be able to stop our offense from making big plays. As long as we don't turn the football over then we're going to be fine.

I would have to side with Herbie on this...I really like us against ND. Herbie also strongly defended RR when the freep thing broke - called it a witch hunt on the air the following Saturday.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:46 PM ^
Is relatively objective and fair-minded; he does his research and generally knows what he's talking about (research? buckeyes?). That being said, his freestyling of "Texas Fight" was atrocious.
If you think about which team looked more impressive over the supposedly stronger opponent, then you would have to go with U of M. Head to head is a different story, which I think Desmond was getting at.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:49 PM ^
At this point, I am not sure I can believe a word that Herbie says. I think he is simply trying to cover his arse. He has a really tough time covering his true feelings about us and I am sure he gets it from his bosses to be careful. As for this opinion, I am tempering my feelings as much as possible. I want to believe, deep down I do believe.... but I have been hurt so many times.. Better to expect the worst and be surprised than the other way around, right? There should be some benefit to suffering through the last two years. Go blue!
September 8th, 2010 at 6:59 PM ^
A) Would you want Herbie to like the UofM? If that's the case, you should have been for the early season Game. You want your rivals to hate you, its more fun. That's why I wish Tressel would just call us out for sucking these last few years... I want to be able to seethe when his name is brought up.
B) Herbie is vanilla. I don't think he could hate anybody. Spielman is the real Wolverine hater. And truth be told, I like it. Let him profess his hate all over ESPN. Just makes me reciprocate all the more...
September 8th, 2010 at 7:22 PM ^
Neither Herbstreit nor Spielman has it in for us. You guys are paranoid.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:31 PM ^
No, my friend. Listen to Spiels on Columbus radio. He has it in for us. He says he has it in for us. He hates us. He disguises nothing.
He is a very good person, but his duodendrum is tuned to hate our team. It's cuz he has all dem teeth and no toothbrush.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:11 PM ^
I do know he has stated in the past if it wasn't for his dad he would of been a Wolverine.

In 2007 before our game against Oregon, I remember him being downright disrespectful towards them. Saying stuff like "Are you guys ever going to be relevant again?"
I read after the game that the coaches caught wind of it and made sure the players knew how they were being addressed in the national media. If Herbie's saying that we will "pummel" ND, I would bet he's trying to get on their bulletin board before I'd believe that he's giving an honest assessment of our team's chances.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:08 PM ^
Herbie is level-headed 99.9% of the time. No analyst knows what's going to happen this Saturday, but his opinion holds more weight than most analysts regardless of his team affiliation. I don't know that we'll pummel them (that would be great, wouldn't it?), but I think we'll put up quite a few points.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:08 PM ^
I have always liked herbie for some reason. Maybe it started when we knocked him out of the game giving us another victory. He was the only analyst sticking up for us in 06 saying we deserved a rematch against OSU and doesnt worship the ground the SEC walks on. He always seems to be honest and when he said in 08 that Sheridan was just awful and OSU would win I respected it. He was honest and didnt sugarcoat it. He also breaks down flaws in OSU and in Pryor so I respect him.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:21 PM ^
Herbstreit wasn't a very good QB. Knocking him out of the game may not have been that bad of a break for OSU.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:30 PM ^
I totally agree with you. Just saying knocking out any OSU quarterback in my book is a good time.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:45 PM ^
He's no asshat cheerleader like that little spitting Irish fuck Lou Holtz. Having followed Herbie as an annoucer, he's been very consistent and objective. And he probably has a lot of respect for U of M considering how they pounded him like he was some wanna be female porn star at a gang bang.

He isn't that great of an analyst. His opinions are pretty blah and not very profound. Bring on Musberger!

feels about Michigan's performance, most of the fans know exactly where the team is at. Any true Michigan fan knows that we can be happy about playing well last Saturday, but that doesn't mean that we're at the point where we can lie back and win games just because we show up. Both the offense and the defense are going to have to take care of business this Saturday. Not to mention, I really don't care how bad ND is, or how good we are; the Irish are always going to give us a good game when we go into South Bend. Personally, I believe we have the tools to beat Notre Dame in true blue fashion. GO BLUE!!

Starting at the 1:27 mark, there is a hat on everybody. Great blocking at the point of attack. Somebody on the radio actually said that the O-Line wasn't that impressive. That it was more Denard then anything else. Would like to send them this clip.
