Some New Names on the Harbaugh Radar

Submitted by alum96 on

Some new names out there - and some fun info on who Harbaugh is following.

ATH/WR Ryan Davis out of FL tweeted today he received an offer and apparently someone from staff will be down to visit today (Thu), along with Bama and Miami, FL.

Just talk to Jim Harbaugh!! Received an Offer from Michigan Wolverines #GoBlue

TomVH had reported Michigan had reached out to him Jan 6th.  He sounds like a slot WR type at 5'10 170 lbs.  Rivals has him top 50ish overall and 8th WR, 247 is less enthusiastic but still top 200.  Obviously if he commits Rivals will be correct.  Crystal ball is Gator oriented so Durkin knows about him obviously.  FSU is #2 with UK #4 (Marrow!).   His offer sheet is pretty much the entire top 25 - for some odd reason offers from teams like MSU Wisconsin OSU but no Michigan until today.  Grrr last staff....

Some of the beat writers are following who Jim follows on twitter to gauge interest.  If interested, today we saw KLS, Kinnel (commit), Davis, and Clark (and the Pope).  I don't think the Pope has eligibility but it can't hurt to have him in the film room.  Chris Williamson is the other guy he followed; this name was floated on the board late last night, 3 star CB with a loaded offer list.

The other new name is TE Aliz'e Jones

  • Jones is the #1 TE for 247 out of Vegas who is a UCLA commit. (Clark #2)   Rivals has him #2 behind Clark.

I had not realized Mora had such a top rated TE in this class - makes it strange Clark would be considering UCLA so strongly.

An interesting year in terms of the cross pollination between UCLA and UM recruits.

I think Harbaugh has the ultimate snake oil. These kids are very impressionable, if Jim can make up for lost time several nice players may switch. Id like to see two big DT's personally. Currently Ohio state is the leader for 4 class of 2016 5 star defensive linemen. We need to be just as good in the trenches.

I am a bit surprised we would go after a WR with Cole in the class as we don't have much room for offensive players in the few slots remainin in 2015.  Looking at the massive departures post 2016 on the DL and DB this is how I see the needs.  This accounts for 9 spots which would require 3 attritions before Feb 4th (assuming both Glasgows and Kerridge get scholarships)

  1. S #2 (S #1 is Kinnel)
  2. DE #1 (was Roseboro)
  3. DT #1
  4. CB #1 (was Taylor or Crawford)
  5. RB #1 (was Weber)
  6. LB #1 (was Kirkland Jr)
  7. CB #2 (was Taylor or Crawford)
  8. DE #2
  9. Best available player - Clark

Looks like we are going after a lot of DBs which is a must - we have almost no DBs left post 2016, assuming Peppers goes pro 1 year early.  We need to replace Crawford and Taylor, and in a bigger class I'd probably take a 4th DB in this class as well.  Then another 4 next year.

Davis is only 170 lbs but his vision is so good (and cut back ability) you can almost envision him as a 185 lb change of pace RB in 2 years if not the slot WR.  We're going to need 2 RBs in the 2016 class since Isaac will be the only guy on the roster in 2017.

Jim recruited 2 QBs in every class except 1 (of 4) at Stanford.  He has exactly 0 QB recruits at Michigan which he picked currently.  I don't know if the type of guy he is after is a guy who gets a scholarship offer.  Or he might be a guy who is a preferred walk on year 1, with the promise to get a scholarship in 2016 when we have more vacancies open.  OL Glasgow and Kerridge graduate so he basically takes one of their scholarships post 2015 - that could be the offer.  It is not a kid in high demand and getting to be coached by Harbaugh and have to pay for 1 year and then get a scholarship would be a solid deal.  Actually with a grayshirt I believe he could get the scholarship Jan 1, 2016 so he'd really only be paying for 1 semester out of pocket.

Agreed.  There are a few obvious candidates out there for attrition - not just WR.  Sort of been surprised not to hear any news this week.  If they do end up going it would help the program if it was before Feb 4th.  There are guys out there now in year 2-3 and are not even talked about in terms of 2 deep.

I haven't heard that Michigan has had much contact with him recently, but I'm not a huge fan of Moorman as a prospect. But Harbaugh and Drevno have a history of coaching up offensive linemen, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. If they see Moorman as being fit for an offer (which he would probably accept), then I guess I'd be okay with it.

Contrary to popular opinion, the Ohio State NC is not a complete zero sum game loss for us in recruiting.

It is true that we are not going to beat them for a lifer Ohio kid they really want, or a kid from the south that fits their system perfectly.  But there are a limited number of those kids each year, and they can't take them all anyway.  We are not going to lose 20 out of 20 recruits to Ohio State.

Where their win actually helps us is with national recruiting.  The Big Ten East is becoming a glamour destination for recruiting.  Ohio State won the NC.  MSU won the Rose Bowl last year and the Cotton Bowl this year.  The Harbaugh hire generated a buzz for all of college football.  Penn State is off of sanctions and ready to regain form.

This helps us tremendously when competing with schools nationwide like UCLA, Tennessee, Notre Dame, etc. for recruits.  Our conference division is now a plus for recruiting, not something we have to apologize for.

Marcus Lewis.  I get that other guys might be a priority at this point (Marshall) but it seems like we should be casting a wide net this late in the game and Lewis has always had interest.

On Tuesday I was talking about the college football championship with a nice kid from the San Clemente High track team. I mentioned that I went to Michigan, and he says, "Yeah, Harbaugh. He calls my friend Sam (Elite 11 San Clamente quarterback Sam Darnold) every day and tells him, 'Come play at Michigan. You're going to be my next Colin Kaepernick'."  This kid goes on, "I think he should go there. Harbaugh's the best coach, with all his connections, to get him into the pro's. But he likes USC."

I had to agree with the young mans sentiment. Sam Darnold, however, remains committed to USC as of now.

Seemed like an interesting glimpse of a high school athletes view of Jim Harbaugh.
