Some Football Playoff Talk

Submitted by alum96 on

We are in our own little bubble today but the rest of college football marches on.  Today's update on the playoffs had 2 interesting results - Florida State continues to get punished for winning in uninspiring fashion... which I like a lot.  They have now fallen to #4.  TCU moving up to #3 and separating from Baylor by 3 slots is the other shocker - their bodies of work are quite similar and Baylor won the head to head.  TCU seems to be ahead mostly on SOS overall which is mostly due to Baylor's horrific OOC and TCU's win over .... wait for it... Minnesota.

The Fighting Rich Rods also jumped ahead of MSU to the #7 slot and OSU stayed at #5 despite the loss of QB - granted it was an impressive win over a great opponent last week. :)

Wisconsin is not getting respect and still out of the top 10 with the same record as MSU however - I'd put their wins over Nebraska by a bazillion (vs MSU's by 4) and Minnesota, over MSU's resume of top 2 wins of Nebraska by 4 ... and I struggle to find a 2nd quality win... Maryland would be it I suppose.  The  afterglow of the OSU and Stanford wins is really helping MSU along with "quality losses".

And for all the talk of SEC bias there is ONE SEC team in the top 9.  The SEC West bludgeoned itself to death.

  1. Bama
  2. Oregon
  3. TCU
  4. FSU
  5. OSU
  6. Baylor
  7. Zona
  8. MSU
  9. KSU
  10. Miss State
  11. GA Tech
  12. Ole Miss
  13. Wiscy
  14. GA
  15. UCLA

Baylor plays KSU this week and has 1 more chance at a convincing win. OSU plays Wisconsin.  TCU has a tomato can.  Zona v Oregon looks like a straight play in game now with Zona at 7.  GA Tech can now knock out FSU from the playoffs as that 4th seed puts them in a vulnerabe position.

but their 5 losses are:

a competitive opener to #1 Bama by 10

kind of a bad loss to #20 Oklahoma at home by 12

to #3 TCU on a late field goal by a point

another bad loss at Texas by 17

to #9 K State by 6

Not your typical 5 loss team.  Meanwhile, TCU's big Minnesota win keeps being pumped up, but Minny has 4 losses and did not really beat anyone aside from Nebraska.

I really like the chaos idea. Here is total chaos:

1. Alabama loses to #16 Missouri

2. Oregon loses to #7 Arizona

3. TCU loses to unranked Iowa State

4. Florida State loses to #11 Georgia Tech

5. Ohio State loses to #13 Wisconsin

6. Baylor loses to #9 Kansas State

That puts Arizona as the one seed, Kansas State as the two seed, Georgia Tech with the three seed and either Michigan State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Wisconsin, or Missouri as the four seed.

Hopefully it will be this,

Arizona vs. Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl

Kansas State vs. Georgia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.

if what you are saying is true, the committee basically feels that a win over a barely above average Minnesota team trumps a head to head win, which is completely asinine.

I really really REALLY hope Richrod gets in, and not because I want to keep rtying to make some point about him being a good coach. I just LIKE watching him develop offensive talent out of young 2 and 3 star players. He is one of the most innovative coaches out there, and honestly I'd like to see him somehow knock off Bama... IDK if he beats the ducks 3 times in a row, but he's had a crazy run as it is this year.

I'd cheer for that shit all day, would make it more interesting. I'm tired of Oregon.  I want the dog to win.

is the complete lack of SEC teams.  Like Alum96 said, they beat each other up and out of the rankings.  Most people seem to think that it's just a matter of time before the playoff expands, but heck, even with these rankings if there was an 8 team playoff the SEC would only get one team in it.

I like Chaos.... So, if Georgia manages to beat Bama,  K State knocks off Baylor,  GTech triple-options FSU back to Tallahassee, and the Fighting RR's make 3 out of 3 vs. Oregon.  For shits and giggles Wisky runs for about 700 yards against OSU.

The playoff teams would be in no particular order:

Arizona, TCU, Sparty, and Bama?  (can't have a playoff without a SEC team right?)  Unless Georgia rolls Bama, and one of the others is a nailbiter loss, I just don't see another legitimate 4th team?  What are your chaos theories?
