Soliciting Opinions re: Watching Michigan Football Games on DVR

Some of you may recall my posts last season about how I was able to increase my viewing pleasure during gamedays by fast-forwarding through all defensive series so as only to watch the offense.  Last year, I found that was the easiest way to prevent cardiac arrest, teaching my toddler words that I would not want him repeating at school, and/or destruction of personal property.

This year, however, I am not sure how to proceed . . . Like most, I am looking forward to a new season, to seeing the new direction of the program, and most imporantly to watching Denard and the offense again.  The question is:  Will the defense be improved enough to warrant watching that side of the ball as well?  In the short term, do I start out the season by watching the entire game?  Or do I start out pessimistic (my default position) and go into the season thinking I'm going to continue the trend of skipping watching the defense?

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

You must be much more heavily medicated than I am, or much less emotionally involved in the games.  I seriously had to fast-forward through the defensive series, it was that painful.  This coming from a guy that used to tape games on VHS back in the 80s (yes, before the internet) and re-watch them that way.

of talent, ability, or results, I will never turn off a Michigan game. We could be down 50-0. That doesn't mean that I will turn off the defense. I want to see Demens, Martin, Roh, ect. I wanna watch them progress. Even if their unit as a whole has a tough time, I invest enough into them that I owe it to myself and them to watch them. You either experience joy with them AND suffer with them, or neither. Your choice. You can't have one or the other.

It would have been a good point if I had not been being facetious in my OP.  I guess I should have made it clear that I watched the vast majority of the games and fast-fowarded only through the defensive series when I couldn't take watching them anymore (e.g. 4th quarters of the second half of season).

The purpose of this thread was to discuss the outlook of the defense early on, whether we should be on "fast-foward" lookout or go in not having to have our fingers on the button.  But I guess my subtle point was wasted (or poorly worded in my OP).

If you DVR the game, then just ffw through the commercials, this is totally acceptable. The defense will be improved this year for several reasons, namely that they will be better coached and a year older with with 10? previous starters returning. I would hope to see a FSU/ Texas A&M type of improvment in terms of last year to this season as those two teams were ranked in the 100s in 2009 and quite a jump in defensive production in 2010 from new coaching and many returning starters.

Unless the team gives up 435 yards against Western or something then feel free to go back to your previous DVR habits.

suck it up! watch the game. the only reson to watch a game on the dvr is if you have to work or miss it. or you are rewatching it!! if you are a fan then be a fan, good or bad! the D will bounce back some day. hopefully soon. The reason you watch and the players play is because you dont know what is going to happen. This is why they play the game! you cant just skip the parts you dont like. Love Michigan football good or bad. Dont do it half ass!

All things reflect this, including Michigan football.  In order to fully appreciate the highest of heights you have to have been to the lowest lows.  Increase your awareness of both potentials.  It'll make our future naitonal championships that much sweeter to have watched every agonizing second of the building process.  I was 13 when we won in '97, I remember thinking that it would be a common occurence.  Having watched Michigan Football for 20 years I can now more fully put that championship into context and realize how special it truly was.

Negative emotions are rough, but everything happens for a reason, so watch every single second of Michigan football this season and all those to follow, or else your emotional ecstacy will not be as potent when the time comes.

Also this is a good reason to have continued watching the Lions over the last decade plus.

It is your birthday.

Yes, it definitely does.  However, with a toddler at home it is a necessity - I can't take watching the game in bits and pieces, pausing constantly.  I need to be able to watch it in one sitting in peace and quiet.

I really cannot believe this even warrants a post. If you are a fan of football and a fan of Michigan there should be no question that you watch the entire game. No need to give up on half the team, the defensive players put out their best effort and deserve your support.

You gotta at least be curious as to how the defense is going to perform.   I don't see how you could skip it.

I always use DVR and watch games later.  Occassionaly (like, when the weather won't support golf during the day), I'll start watching about 60 minutes after kickoff.  This allows me to not have to listen to between snap commentary, commercials or halftime "experts" telling me what I already saw.  Works great, for me, but I understand that some people like to watch live.

That said - I can't imagine not watching defense or part of the game.  I love to watch the game, the entire game.  I care about more than the final score.

My advice?  Use the DVR, play some golf or hang with the family and watch the whole thing later.  Works wonders for my blood pressure.  I hardly ever find myself standing on the couch yelling at the TV anymore...:-)
