Softball wins B1G Championship outright

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Another day, another game against Penn State, another B1G Championship and another walkoff winner in a run rule.

Kelly Christner hits the walkoff *single* on senior day and Michigan leaves no doubt. They win 10-2 in 5 innings and are the 2015 B1G Champions outright.

21-2 B1G record.

Now go win the B1G Tournament!

YES!  So glad to see us get that solo title back after last year.  I did not like sharing, and I can't imagine the team did either!  Such a fitting way to wrap it up, too - at home, on senior day, senior pitcher getting the final outs, and the two stars of the hitting line-up combining for the sealing run, with Christner driving in Romero.  We've set ourselves up really well for the post-season - a home regional seems to be in the books regardless of the B10 tourney, and probably a home super-regional as well unless something weird happens.  We've just got to keep playing our game, and the sky is the limit.

Small correction to the OP, it was a walk-off single.

I'll admit I was feeling a bit uneasy after the KSU and Iowa losses. The team last year did not finish the conference season in good form, but this year was a completely different story. Pitching down the stretch was fantastic, and the team showed great resolve in the few real nailbiters. Can't wait for postseason softball at Alumni Field!

I was in the same boat around that time of the season, especially after getting run-ruled at Minnesota.  I thought the super-regionals were gone for sure, and that we'd have to work just to host regionals.  Fortunately our fantastic non-conf. buoyed us up, and we turned things around in a big way.  After the run-rule, I said we'd have to be pretty much flawless the rest of the way - and that's exactly what the team delivered!I

If you had to peg a turning point in this season, it would have to be the 3rd inning of the 2nd Minnesota game.  We'd given up a few ugly losses, the defense was looking questionable, and we'd just let a 3-run lead turn into a 1-run deficit.  The ladies answered back, scoring 6 more runs, starting with 1 in the 3rd, and shutting the Gophers out for the rest of the game.  They haven't looked back since - let's hope they keep going in that direction!

If Auburn beats Lsu in Baton Rouge ( up 1-0 in 2nd) then Auburnn wins the regular season SEC title. IF Michigan wins the BIG tournament and UF loses anither in the SEC tourney then UM would prob be #2 seed depending on Oregon or #3 becuse of the 2 head to head losses to UF...either way its looking VERY good,,If a few things go our way who knows they could capture the #1 oveall seed

Mets owner Fred Wilpon was at the game.

Alumni Field is officially known as Alumni Field at the Wilpon Softball Complex.

On BTN we have Indiana vs OSU.

Indiana head coach Michelle Bolster vs OSU head coach Kelly Kovach. Both played for Michigan under Hutch.

Ashley Lane is a volunteer assistant at Kentucky, Jessica Merchant is an assistant at Minnesota. Melissa Gentile is the head coach at EMU. They all played for Hutch here, as well.

Fielding Yost would be very proud of the program Hutch has built here. Bo already saw it coming in the mid-90s when he was quoted by Bacon saying Hutch is "the best damn coach on this campus".

B1G Tournament bracket is out.

1 Michigan will play one of the teams they swept in their final two regular season series.

They'll play the winner of the 8 Maryland vs 9 Penn State first round game. Game will be on Friday at 2:30pm on BTN.

The B1G Tournament will be held at Buckeye Field in Columbus. The last time Michigan played there (which was March 20-22), they won their 3 games against OSU by a combined score of 46-2.

If Michigan wins 3 games by that margin again at Buckeye Field, they'll win the 2015 B1G Tournament.
