need to get the big hit earlier.   In the first 2 innings we had 2 on with less than 2 outs.

In softball, a runner on 2nd base is NOT considered to be in scoring position.  It is rare that a base hit directly to an outfielder will score a runner from 2nd base.  Although Hutch did this with our first run.

We need some key hits like Sara's.  This has been our problem all year.

Runners on second  and third base are both considered to be in scoring position. Why? Because all it usually takes to score that runner on second base is a base hit. There are some circumstances when this is not true (a slower player, or a very weak hit that makes it to the outfield) but generally speaking, they will score with a good base hit.

Softball pitcher extraordinaire, girlfriend to justingoblue (although maybe I shouldn't admit to that).

runners on third are but not second.  The outfielders are only playing150-160 feet or so from home plate.  In most cases a runner who tries to score on a base hit will be thrown out.

In baseball however, runners get to lead off and the outfielders are over 200 feet away from home plate.
