Softball sweeps MSU w/ 8-0 win, 17th straight over Spartans

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Last Wednesday's game against terrible MSU was a lot closer than expected. In fact, it was a pitcher's duel for 5 innings before Michigan plated some runs. The story of that game was Betsa dominating with 13 strikeouts.

Today was a different story in terms of offense in Michigan's case.

First off, it's important to note that after Kelly Christner's strong weekend against OSU, she has been put back into the #3 spot in the order and Kelsey Susalla is batting right behind her.

It didn't take long for Michigan to get going. After a 1-2-3 inning by Sara Driesenga, Christner hit a two-out single to get on base. And then Susalla, who was being honored today, sent her home with a 2-run shot to put Michigan up 2-0 after 1.

Two innings later, Christner struck again but this time she was the one driving a run in. Her double scored Romero to make it 3-0 Michigan.

Driesenga's no-hitter bid was ended in the 4th inning, but nothing ever came of the hit for MSU.

The 5th inning is where the game was won. Christner singeled to score Si-Lo, and then Susalla singeled to score both Romero and Christner to give Michigan a 6-0 lead.

With Susalla on, Tera Blanco blasted one over the fence for a 2-run shot, ending the game in 5 innings via the run rule.

Susalla and Christner finished a combined 5-for-5 with 6 RBIs. They plated every run but the final two. Hutch certainly knew what she was doing by inserting them into their new spots in the lineup today. Welcome back!

Michigan wins 8-0 in 5 innings via the run rule. That's the 17th straight win for the Wolverines over the Spartans. 10 of those 17 wins were via the run rule, just for perspective on how dominant Michigan is.

Michigan is now 34-4 and 12-2 in the B1G.

Michigan will face Maryland this weekend at Alumni Field for a series, with the first game being on Friday at 6pm.

We lead in every sport but WBB, Volleyball and Men's Soccer.

WBB is the least successful program here historically. Brutal history. One of neglect. Just never have found that coach that has made the program into something successful.

In all honesty, all women's sports were neglected at the beginning. Canham was pretty awful in that regard. Bo was the one who brought the winds of change when he took over as AD.

VB has a pretty rough history prior to 1999. Thankfully Mark Rosen has turned the program into something. Final 4 in 2012.

MSOCC is only 16 years old as a program. They've won 3 of the last 5 in the series and have kept Big Bear home in Ann Arbor the last two seasons, and 3 of the last 4 times he has been on the line.

Just pathetic - it's so clear that, outside of football & b-ball, they're just a low-standards athletic department.  Keeping Anastos on yet again, keeping these clowns on staff ... ridiculous.  The most amazing thing out of the story about their softball staff was the player actually publicly saying that she regretted choosing to attend MSU, because she wanted to have an opportunity to win, and never got it there.  I can't remember ever hearing anyone else say something like that!

They're a garbage department overall and Hollis is a terrible AD.

He didn't hire Mike Dantonio.

He didn't hire Izzo.

He hired a disgraced conference commissioner who hadn't coached in literally 20 years at the collegiate level as their hockey coach.

What has he done besides create gimmick events and update facilities for the two sports they care about?

It's been really good to see Christner getting her bat going again these last few games.  Early in the season, we heard a lot about the team struggling under the weight of expectations hanging over from last season, and I wonder if she was one of the players more impacted by that than some others.  She was nowhere near her standards early on, but has been slowly creeping back towards what's she's truly capable of.  Still not quite in the glittering form from a year ago, but moving in the right direction.  If she can keep making progress, that'll be a big boost heading into the post-season.

Great to see Driesenga put up a goose egg as well.  You know that's the thing Hutch is happiest about after this W!

during that time there have been five HRs that have cleared the RF bleachers--17 rows with the the first row even with the top of the fence, Hasselbach, Christer, Sweet and Susalla hit her second one tonight. None of our opponents have hit one over.

That is legitimately a cool story, bro. :)  I remember watching Sweet hit hers last year, also against MSU - unfortunately I had to settle for BTN, living in DC as I do.  Tight game against Sparty, and she delivered maybe the hardest-hit softball I've ever seen in my life, not even CLOSE to the bleachers!  What a moment!

That's pretty amazing that you've gotten to be at every game during that span.  I'd love it if in these threads you could share some more stories that those of us who have to follow the team via BTN/twitter/Gametracker/box scores might not have had the chance to know about.  I love the sfotball team so much, but so rarely get the on-the-ground experience, I am always excited to hear from those who do get to have it!

is hitting they are something to watch. They have been up and down, at times this year, but seem to be putting it together now, which is the right time of year to get the bats hot.

Megan and Sara keep pitching well and this team might just clear that last hurdle this year and win it all.
