Typically LH batters start out deep in the box with their left foot on the back line. The box in softball is larger than the box in baseball.
When the batter runs and "slaps" at the ball, they are 3-4 steps closer to first base. The slapper will try to punch it between 3B and SS or slap down at the ball to make it bounce very high. Quick batters will usually beat a throw unless it is hit directly at a fielder.

What would happed if a batter fouled off a pitch and broke her foot? The new batter would assume the pitch count. The batter could re-enter on defense and the sub would be spent.
