Softball clinches 9th straight B1G Championship!!!

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The streak continues.

Michigan punched Rutgers in the face again to clinch the B1G Championship.

Not only is this the 9th straight B1G Championship, but Michigan has won 18 of the last 21 titles.

Michigan went up 3-0 in the 1st inning on a sac fly by Romero and a 2-run shot by Blanco.

Rutgers scored a run in the 2nd after they got some base runners on walks and, but Michigan scored two more runs in that same inning on a bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice by Christner to make it 5-1.

In the 4th, Michigan ended the game. Romero hit a 2-run blast--her second HR of her senior weekend--to make it 7-1 Michigan. Aidan Falk put the game into run rule territory with a 2 RBI double that took a slow roll all the way to the wall, making it 9-1 Wolverines.

Faith Canfield has officially arrived. She's been making noise the last few weeks and once again hit another big one: a 2-run shot to put it out of reach and make it 11-1 Michigan.

After a Dreiesenga strikeout, backup catcher Katie Alexander made a PHENOMENAL diving catch in foul territory to record the second out. Rutgers would fly out for their last out to end the game.

Michigan wins 11-1 in 5 innings and clinches their NINTH (9th!) STRAIGHT B1G CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Michigan is now 43-4 and 20-2 in the B1G with one conference game left. Senior day, tomorrow at Noon.

Michigan has also locked up the 1 seed in the B1G Tournament and will play at 2:30pm on Friday in the B1G Tournament Quarterfinals at University Park, PA.

It is perplexing that Mlive can't see fit to cover the softball team on a regular basis.  It's not like the Michigan beat writers have much else to do right now anyway.

If I heard correctly, and they were correct on tv, Michigan Softball is now alone in 2nd for longest ever B1G title streak behind Michigan Women's Swimming (12) and ahead of Penn State Women's Volleyball (8). Is this correct?

I tried Googling it, but softball info is hard to come by or paywalled.

What year?   Betsa has another year, so the new pitcher wouldn't be coming in until fall 2017?

Any info on the other recruits would also be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to the softball team on essentially dominating the conference for a decade now - it has been a rather spectacular run for them indeed.

As for championship threads, I always thought they should be a separate deal, but for softball we're so used to these threads containing good news in general that I think we get spoiled. I am OK with this too.

1) Florida    47-4

ERA                  1st at 0.94/gm

Runs scored  27th at 6.19/gm

2) UM          41-4

ERA                23rd at 2.28/gm

Runs scored     2nd at 8.49/gm

With today's Mercy Rule walk off, I just figured out that UM only bats 4 times in a home game walk off.

For the season, UM has 25 Mercy Rule walk-offs in 47 games (thru today)

Imagine their scoring average, if they had played full 7 inning games.

By comparison, Florida has 17 Mercy Rule walk-offs in 53 games (thru today)

Will be interesting if we get the matchup that everyone is expecting in the NCAA finals.

I was just reviewing the current rankings. Florida 1, Michigan 2. My question, does anyone else in the B1G play softball? I think I saw Minnesota at 20 or so. Seriously B1G, best you can do?
