Softball beats OSU twice

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Due to cold weather yesterday and warm weather today down in Columbus, #18 Michigan took on #25 Ohio State in a doubleheader today on the road.

In the first game, Michigan would come out pouncing on OSU early in front of a full capacity Buckeye Field (not a sellout since they don't charge admission, even though they charge admission for an intrasquad football practice game).

Michigan went up 4-0 on a 2 RBI single by Abby Ramirez and a 2 RBI triple by Kelly Christner.

OSU would get one back on a solo shot in the bottom of the 1st to make it 4-1.

But Michigan would respond with a two-out RBI single by Aidan Falk to make it 5-1 Michigan.

Abby would again tack on a run with an RBI in the 4th to push it to 6-1 Michigan. OSU would cut the lead to 4 shortly after when they scored on a fielding error, but Kelly Christner would add one more insurance run in the 6th inning to make it 7-2 Michigan

Michigan would hang on to win, 7-2. Betsa gave up just 4 hits and finished with 12 Ks.

That win extended Michigan's winning streak over Ohio State to 20.

The second game would take place 30 minutes later and would be quite a different game.

After a quiet 1st inning, OSU would hit a 2-run shot off of Tera Blanco to go up 2-0.

That lead lasted just half an inning, as Michigan would take the lead in the top of the 3rd on a 3-run blast by Aidan Falk to put Michigan up, 3-2.

OSU would again hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 4th to go up 4-3, but Michigan would AGAIN respond to just a half inning later, and re-take the lead.

The Wolverines permanently recaptured the lead on an RBI single with two outs by the pitcher Tera Blanco and then an error on a fielder's choice when the OSU 2B dropped the ball, allowing Blanco to cross the plate to make it 5-4 Michigan.

After pitching a full 7 inning game just hours before, Megan Betsa would take over in the circle for Blanco. She picked up right where she left off, striking out 9 in just 3 innings to finish the day with 21 Ks! Betsa would even make her second appearance at the plate in this game, reaching base on a walk and keeping her perfect career OBP.

Michigan would add three insurance runs in the 6th inning on a 3-run double by Blanco, to make it 8-4 Michigan.

Michigan would win it, 8-4. Taking both games of the doubleheader.

Michigan is now 28-7-1 and 8-0 in the B1G.

Michigan will play OSU again in the final game of the weekend series tomorrow at 1pm.

Whew!  They had me worried for a bit there in the 5th.  Glad the ladies pulled out that 2nd game.  I love that they pulled their pitcher after Blanco hit that 3-run double.  She had been pissed off at Blanco the entire game.  It was awesome. That hit was just icing on the cake.

Also, if it wasn't already confirmed last week when they got swept by Nebraska, it's definitely confirmed now with them dropping a game to Iowa.  Wisconsin is weak sauce.  Officially at threat level zero.

Well, anytime you have the opportunity to beat OSU in a given day and you do it, that is a nice day indeed. When you do it twice, well, that's just an awesome day and there's nothing that can subtract from that.

As I'm sure Hutch knows, you can't ask Betsa to throw as much as she did the last couple of days. Blanco's improving, but the fact that a very tired Betsa had to go again today is an issue. Hutch is in a tough spot. OSU has the best offense in the league, and taking 2 of 3 on the road was great, though.
