I just graduated boot camp, I've been gone since national signing day. Anyone wanna give me a break down of the major happenings since then? Is there any where I can watch the spring game online? It's great to be back, not having access to Mgoblog for this long was unbearable.

I don't know how anyone else feels, but I actually like the all white away uniforms. I know we don't do alternates, but it would be pretty sweet to have that as an alternate for the maize pants next season.

I usually don't get worked-up over internet stuff, but to to neg someone for thanking a poster for serving out country is just lowdown and chaps my ass.
First, it's irrelevant. The guy just wanted to know what's happened in the world of UM sports over a given time. He wasn't fishing for reinforcement for his career choice.
Or, second, if he is just proud to have graduated basic and wants everyone to know about it, and also wants people to tell him how great it is, that's nice and all, but maybe someone got annoyed he chose to make his personal announcement on a blog about UM sports. Graduating basic isn't exactly serving one's country, yet. It's a great accomplishment, and - since he's apparently in the Army - he'll eventually endure more discomfort than most of us. But this whole "thank you for your service" seems premature, which maybe drew a vote down.
I don't care either way. I think he could have just looked up news from the time period in question, which is what I do. But MGoBoard posts are notorious for being pointless; at least his ostensibly was about UM sports. But I could see someone irked by the whole "I'm in the military!" announcement followed by the almost cliche "Thank you for your service."
I'm writing this from my CHU in Iraq, so please take that into account if anyone wishes to use an ad hominem argument in response. Also, you can thank me for my service or not; what I really care about is Congress' balancing the budget so I don't miss a rent payment.

Yours is a very thoughtful post, and these are as legitimate grounds as any for downvoting the post. However, if I may provide a respectful rebuttal:
1) "What did I miss?" may have solicited more than just news about Michigan athletics. It may have sought developments on the board, who freaked out about points, who did whatever, etc.... MGoBlog and MGoBoard are their own cultures with their own developments. If the OP's question was getting at these things as well, he could not have read the newspapers to get an anwer. Moreover, while he may have been able to get raw news elsewhere, perhaps he was also interested in MGoBlog opinions surrounding the news.
2) Even assuming that all the negs were motivated by the reasons you articulate, are those reasons really sufficient to justify downvoting someone who sought to show gratitude for someone else's service of our country? Why not just see it and scroll on by? Call it "cliche," and you are certainly well within reason to do so, but that does not take away from the genuineness of the sentiment expressed. Moreover, it may appear "premature" to those who are doing/have done a tour(s) already, but this gentleman who finished basic has gone further than I ever have or will. To me, it's not premature. I admire him now - I'll admire him even more if he does a tour or tours. Similarly, I'm grateful now, and will be even more grateful then.

I guess I'm ambivalent - I'm not worked up if someone wants to say thank you, and I'm not worked up if someone wants to down vote. I was just trying to give an answer to the guy who thought there was no reason to down vote. Seeing it and scrolling on by makes the most sense to me.
As for your paragraph #1: you're right, and I didn't account for that in my first post; that's an entirely possible motivation, and, if it's the true one, probably the one least open to a down vote.
I certainly don't mean to dismiss the genuineness of anyone who says "thank you for your service" - I can't imagine trying to go to a cruddy place like Vietnam in the rainy season and getting beat down when you get home. My guess is that people who thank others for their service generally mean it. My only point was that - in the context of a sports blog about UM sports - someone could get annoyed that it's out of place. But again, I agree: scrolling on by would have been my choice.
And yeah, if he's enlisted in the Army, I'm guessing he'll still have to go to some kind of technical school after basic, but he'll end up doing a lot more in 4 years than I'll do in three times that. So I don't begrudge him anything - he deserves whatever praise people want to give him. Just to repeat myself - if that praise comes on a blog post about UM sports, I can see someone being annoyed.

As the person that negged the OP, I'll state this is exactly why. Between his avatar, signature, and totally irrelevant "I just graduated boot camp", I just felt like being the only person to neg him. Besides, the proper thing to do would be to go back and read just the main page articles from the day he last read them.
1. He'll catch up on all the news.
2. It's really enjoyable to read Brian's writing.
This isn't me condoning that puffywoods guy's comment, as I hope everyone returns home safely from whereever they may be. It was more a neg for the same reason I occasionally neg PromoteRichRod ("Have I told you I'm in law school at Michigan?") StephenKrass or Mgowrld("Hey, I have a hot wife") or anyone else that drops totally irrelevant personal information they are just that proud of.
TL;DR - the innertubes occasionally make me cranky.

However, even assuming that's what OP is doing here (and I'm not convinced that's the case), his purpose is clearly distinguishable from the two examples you mention. Neither of those examples of vain self-assertion compares with OP here in my view. Even if this is vain self-assertion, you must (IMHE) acknowledge that his is of a different order. "I'm fighting for my country" is a hell of a lot more noble and more worthy of pride than "I go to M law school," or "I have a hot wife."

Basic is one of those things that I'm most glad I experianced , but never wish to go through again.
You haven't missed too much: 6 2012 recruits, lots of talk about manball (and the endless debate it musters), tOSU's unfolding saga of lying, a great hockey run, constant comparisons to the old coaching staff (see manball), Sparty getting arrested, and a spring game that had some worried until they watched other spring games.

The basketball team took Duke to the brink in the "second" round, but fell just short. Pending Darius Morris' decision on whether or not to enter the draft, there are great expectations for next season.
The hockey team got a Monumental win over UND in the Frozen Four, but fell just short against UM-D in an overtime final game with seriously questionable refereeing throughout.
And Thank You for your service, we all appreciate it greatly.

i mean i cant really blame it on anyone but myself but this year michigan admission's office really did a bad job. they took so much time and at the end bcuz they couldnt review all of them, they are just waitlisting people.
w/e. ill watch michigan games at nyu.
So why would they take more time this year than any other year? Are you just assuming that gobs of people were waitlisted to make yourself feel better or did something fundamentally change at the University? Just curious b/c that seems like a rather bold statement.

M went to the common app, and I heard that it caused applications to almost double, or something like that. I'm not sure admissions was ready to go through them all.
yea like sambojangles said, this is the first year they are trying out the common app so people from everywhere applied to michigan this year.
i wasnt saying that they shouldnt have used the common app because its easier for students. but i think they werent well-prepared and ready to take and review all the application. they took 3 more wks than other schools did (normally decisions come out by april 1st), and may 1st is the day seniors send deposits and decide where they are going. so i think it was a little unfair for students waiting for michigan's decision.
now, am i mad at michigan for waitlisting me this late? sure a little bit but i am still obsessed with UMich and im wasnt blaming them for releasing their decisions this late.
If you go to NYU then you'll at least be chest deep in hipster pussy.
Hmm. This explains why a top clarinet auditioner last year at the school of music wound up going to NYU instead of Michigan (semi-s)

First let me echo everyones thank yous. My daughter is in the Air Force and will be deploying to Kuwait in late May or early June. As far as happenings, Michigan football is heading in the right direction again and we are well on our way to a top recruiting class. Can't wait to see the team on the field this fall. I started working out again after shoulder surgery shelved me for three months.
I forgot to renew my subscription to Enigmatic Monthly.
My buddy Rob told me about some Chinese herb he's been taking and it helps him with his manly stuff (working out, strength, boners, etc)--but I can't remember the name of the herb and now I have to wait until Monday to find out.

BASKETBALL: Michigan's win at Breslin became the catalyst for a huge finish to the year. They won 8 of their last 11 including a season sweep of Sparty. The RCMB imploded, and we got Muppets. We lost a game to Wisconsin on a last-second lucky bank of a 3-point bomb. We now hate backboards. We hit the Tournament as an 8 seed and destroyed Tennessee by 30. Bruce Pearl was fired. We were then down by more than a dozen to Duke, but came back in the second half. A Darius Morris floater in the lane clanked around and out, and we lost by two. We now hate rims, too. Darius has been flirting with the draft, and has entered his name (but has NOT hired an agent, so we remain hopeful).
HOCKEY: Hockey became really really good. The won the CCHA regular season, though they yakked it up to Western in the CCHA tournament. They made the Frozen Four, where they beat probably the best team in the country, North Dakota, as Hunwick stood on his head whilst pulling saves out of his ass (not an easy contortion to pull off). More muppets. They lost the final to Minnesota-Duluth in OT; they didn't play especially well, but still had a shot. Red has said that he doesn't expect anyone to turn pro. The Big Ten hockey conference will also be starting next year as a six-team conference (UofM, MSU, OSU, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Penn State).
FOOTBALL: Brady Hoke is receiving some serious positive press from the media, both locally and nationally. Greg Mattison has earned a reputation as a hell of a recruiter, and we're in on a bunch of top-flight defenders. We've already got two 4-star linebackers, with another "silent commit" who is apparently a big deal. Offensively, we've got two OL commits (both 3-star at this point), and two tight end commits (their profiles are still on the main page).
OTHER: Michigan Softball has been dominant all year. So has Men's Lacrosse, and there is an expectation that they will declare an intention to move to D1 status soon. Wolverines won the individual all-around competition for both Mens and Women's gymnastics, and the women finished 6th in the country as a team.
Small addition to basketball summary: we finished the regular season by sweeping Sparty, 70-63, after which Tom Izzo whined, with a straight face, that we ran up the score.

That is so much less bad than I expected, btw. It wasn't good, but it wasn't apocalyptic either.
