can i have your fries
So Long and Thanks for All the Fish
Gimme some of your tots...
But seriously, Dan, I've really appreciated your thoughtful diaries and comments over the years. I hope you come back when you're ready, and I hope that when some of your frustration passes you'll understand that the snarky or angry/bitter/devastated reactions of mgousers in the past week are due to their love of Michigan.
I'm warming up to Hoke, especially after seeing the presser and hearing that the players seem to like him and hopefully most if not all will stick around (this was my biggest concern with not hiring a big name), but yesterday I wanted Dave Brandon's intestines on a skewer. We done wrong by our last coach, and I'm not thrilled about how Brandon handled the situation...I'm starting to get over it but it will take others a bit longer. We've experienced some emotional losses and have tons of uncertainty here, any way you slice it, and people grieve loss and deal with uncertainty in all sorts of ways. It'll take some time for folks (including Brian) to come to terms and regain equilibrium.
See ya when you get back; otherwise, take care.
Wrote a few days about the same feeling. Read alot and don't post alot. But the negativity can be really bad around here. My wife actually noticed and commented on it. Life is short. I'm amazed at how many people are so purely negative and willing to trash. I think Brian must be simply exhausted at this point. But he needs to get alot more positive about this stuff. I mean, this is college sports, not life and death. Let's have some fun, right? Brian, please lead us to a happier place with inspiring, supportive stuff, not the nearly constant downer stuff.
Nice avatar. I have a framed picture of that hanging in my dorm room. As for the guy leaving, I get what your saying, but people can have their opinions. Some are negative, but not everyone will be on the same page. Im sure Brian will warm up to Hoke. Im sure after watching the presser today, it had to change him a little. It changed me. Im now a Hokeamaniac.
But now you're just as bad as those who caused you to leave.
Those who stay will be champions... and won't leave us with just OMG Hoke (+ or -) ranters.
And follow him.
Aren't you done being a fan since Brandon saddled you with Hoke?
I will not stick around for Lloyd Carr part 2 aka Brady Hoke.
January 11th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Sorry, didn't know you'd climbed back down from the ignorant-ass statement that the last coach to win Michigan a championship since 1948 was utterly unbearable for Michigan fans. Maybe you're too young to remember anything Lloyd did before 2007.
My thinking is that the people who are so childish that they're first reaction to something disappointing is "Fuck you guys, I'm taking my ball and going home" ... should just do us all a favor and go home.
here's a link in case he feels the need to claim he never said it.
you went on a 5-7 comment binge saying "fuck hoke," "fuck db," calling "LLLLLLLoyd Carr" a benchmark to be avoided, etc.
pot kettle on this one
EDIT: Damn, you were that much faster.... Great minds think alike i guess. Also, snarkiness = the interwebz. sorry....
scrolled down excitedly, hoping to see the elusive triple post.
And my own foolish edit, didn't see it was two people.
I agree with much of what you said Meechigan Dan.
I think that the creator of this site (Brian) needs to police it more to run a more productive site where information can be shared and keep the ass clowns off the site.
Someone asks a simple question on the board and we get 50 hits and not a single one is productive. So I hope that things improve otherwise I am right behind you.
Police it? He's the one leading it...
Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.
Good Riddance! To you and your terrible avatar. I'll be happy not to have to see either anymore.
Who are you?
Take care man.
This is all about you.
I'm with you. I'm going to try and ride it out, but this site has been pretty frustrating as of late. Hopefully it's just a knee-jerk reaction and we can all get back to loving Michigan and hating OSU, ASAP.
I'm on the same page as you. I've decided that I'm blocking ads and checking once a day to see if Brian has changed his tone, Until he does I'm not coming on the site.
Yeah, it would be nice if that would happen. I have to admit, I'm starting to feel the same way as the OP. The level of discourse on this site has been far below what any of should expect from a site of this caliber. This should be one of the most exciting times we'll ever have as fans of the program. This is the type of hire that will absolutely rejuvinate this program, not tear it apart. It is apparent that some people think that because the process wasn't fair to Rich Rodriguez that they need to act the same way toward Brady Hoke. That's just silly. As Michigan fans, we should all be better than that, especially if we really and truly live by the values that we say that we believe.
well, that's like your opinion man.
Can I have his points?
Take a deep breath and relax. Good God. Its a damn blog for Christ sakes. Aka, a place where intelligent, unintelligent, and everyone in between meet and discuss things (in this case its typically Michigan football).
Now I'll never know if that's actually a picture of you.
I see where you're coming from. But I'm not going anywhere. Your complaints are akin to my coke dealer showing up 10 minutea late. I'm upset, but I'm not going to stop buying.
Sorry about that...I really needed to stop at Starbucks for a double latte.
Later on, Lieutenant Dan. Don't let us see you pop up with a new username.
See you in a month, tops.
Yep!...coming together.........oh ya I feel it.
With RR it was all hate and "wins will cure all."
With Hoke it's all love and he hasn't coached a game yet.
I will hold him to the same standard and will pass judgment based on if he wins or not. Right now my opinion leans toward us rehashing upper-level overratedness and not competing for national championships.
I was not a big RR fan at the end and was happy to see him go, but I did not make my judgement until he had three years of FAIL securely under his belt. I will do the same with Hoke: reserve judgement until I actually see the product on the field. I find it odd that some people who were vehemently anti-Hoke are now saying that his presser (?!?) won them over.
As far as the upper-level overratedness and not competing for national championships, at this point RR has lowered the bar so much for me that I will be positively thrilled if UM can get back to Carr-esque levels of performance.< Sigh>
You must really be upset. I heard there is a forum at http://www.mlive.com
Meeechigan Dan is the antithesis of an MLive poster. Unfortunately, this board has been trending toward MLive levels of discourse, which is discouraging him.
From one old poster to another, I completely understand what you are saying. I haven't written much in years, but I enjoyed our discussions a couple of years ago, especially the halo scan days. You have been one of the original contributors (though won't miss the avatar).
I am not going to quit the site as you are suggesting you are doing. However, I understand your feeling. The banner especially is beneath what this site is about. I think Brian is a brilliant writer. I have enjoyed the addition of TomVH and the growth of the professionalism of the site. However, the tone has devolved.
I agree that the current Banner is a disgrace. Unfortunately, it is the first thing anyone (including a curious, potential new poster) sees and is a poor example of the kind of work we can usually count on at MGo.
Please, for the love of God, pull the Banner ASAP!
hit you on the way out. I never cared for your avatar by the way.
EDIT: Perhaps I was a tad too harsh there. Come back when you, Brian, and the rest of us have had time to get used to the new World Order.
Yeah I agree that maybe Brian was a bit unfair towards Hoke. He criticized the man before he's even coached one game here at Michigan which is the exact thing he couldn't stand with Rodriguez.
But acknowledge that this is HIS website and he has every right to post his opinion. He wasn't the only person unahppy with the prospect of getting Hoke but things are changing and I think Brian's opinion of him is changing as well.
Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeechigan Dan, if you think that you will be able to find as good of information, as in-depth of information regarding analysis, data, and recruiting (for free) you will be sorely mistaken.
What has probably upset you is the natural peak of emotion as the program enters yet another significant change. Most people disappointed by the Hoke hire will probably forget about it for at least a year as they remember that they're Michigan fans and find themselves rooting for him and the rest of the team.
There are some other issues that may be upsetting you that can only be characterized as growing pains for a site that is visited by more and more fans. I trust that Brian is always thinking of ways to optimize the site so that we can continue to have a good time here.
In any event, my prediction is that in about a week you're going to get the itch and find your way sneaking back to mgoblog.
I'll miss ya, M-Dan.
Keep your head up man. You can control what you read and the threads you enter. This is the USA. This site represents opinion. This site represents The Michigan Fan. Regardless if you agree with some of the content...the one thing in common is we all want what is best for the team.
Don't give up! A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner!
that this will be just like when girls deactivate from Facebook because it's "too much" then go back a week later. Hopefully this happens to you too!
Bc I'm up too late already. Probably more disappointing than your observations is the flippant way everyone is dismissing you. Don't leave. You seem like a good guy. And you're right. Brady Hoke seems like a good man, and I'll bet he's a good coach too. People who are jumping to criticize should pause and breathe.I've defended Brian, as this is his site, and he really can do with it what he wants. However, you're right. The offensive towards Hoke is too far and needs to change. I think it will.
But we need guys like you. Stick around. Input like you did here and maybe a few more of the guys who are attacking you will appreciate your points as others join you in time.
Although, the Michigan soul thing is a little far. They're just reacting. Their soul will find it's balance again, it's first love will remain. Be there to encourage it.
get a lot of that crap around here. The OP is spot on with his assessment and then you've got jerk bags saying stuff like, "don't let the door hit you". Real classy everyone.
I have to say I share your sentiments to some regard. Last week I found myself begging for someone other than Hoke to be our coach and it was because of this site. I had no particular reason other than Brian's utter disgust for him as a football coach. However, after watching today's press conference and hearing him speak I am looking forward to a great couple of years with Hoke at the helm. I believe it was EXTREMELY unfair the way that Brian treated Hoke in some of his posts, even worst knowing that this guy was on the shortlist of coaches who might actually end up in AA. In a time were the Michigan fanbase is extremely divided this site should be use as a unifying tool, but it was not. In the end, as a Michigan student & fan, I trust the people who made this decision (Brandon et al.) and I am 100% behind the hire and the coach. I urge you to do the same for the sake of the team... and more importantly for Michigan
I've heard a lot of really good things about Hoke, but I was also hoping he wouldn't get the job for this same reason. Well, at least if Denard stays, I think it will reduce the teeth-gnashing.
Seriously, while I agree that the press conference was great, there seems to be too much contagion that it means BH will win games. I'm with Brian, I like to use real tangible evidence (like a previous record) to draw my prediction, not a speech.
Can't say I disagree with you. Given how big this site has become, Brian doesn't have the luxury of taking such a contentious stand against a coach. I think he probably realizes this, given that his rhetoric hasn't been as swear-laden as he promised. Mgoblog has become a legitimate source of information and as such, needs to have a certain amount of objectivity.
I've been around for 2 1/2 years and there have been some great posters and not-so-great posters here. I ignore the ones who seem like idiots or who are incredibly uninformed. Then, there have been the ones who have gotten banned (King of Belch comes to mind). But there was a time when extreme views were frowned upon, as was dickishness. Hopefully, we can get back there.
Wait, are you even still here, Meeeeechigan Dan??????? Meeeeeeechigan Dan???
Those are mammals.
Oh, probably fleeing from Rosenberg.
Stop being such a pussy.
A fanbase that's gone through a lot of disappointment, surprise, and uncertainty over the past few years isn't going to miraculously come back together overnight. Sure, a new coach can be a uniting factor, especially one who loves Michigan as much as Hoke clearly does. But some people have different requirements for what earns their respect. Some still feel ripped off.
And many of us, including Brian are still a little shell-shocked and dealing with our own visceral, gut reactions to what's happening. It's both agonizingly slow and incredibly fast at the same time. We're being pulled side to side constantly, but we're not moving forward. Yet.
Once the new regime (or the old guard, as some think) picks up a little steam, we'll see where we stand. No one here is going to stop rooting for Michigan because of this hire. But people's minds don't just change. We've been divided for a decent chunk of time. Let's take a little bit to allow our wounds to heal before we make rash decisions - even if we feel as though our program hasn't afforded us that same courtesy.
Well that's the great thing about the internet. See, if you don't like a site, especially one that's provided for free, you can just not go to that site anymore...
Of course, the whole emo whiny post about how the site used to be so much better just makes you sound petty but whatever, take care.
No, it let's the owner of the site know that people are sick of him pouting about the hire. It shows threw in his posts and it makes it really hard to read knowing that he's doing the exact same thing that he has criticized the last three years.
Brian has integrity and, surely, reserves his right to criticize and applaud when he sees fit. He's not a cheerleader, he's a cheerer, to be sure, but his job isn't to fall in line.
I'm not saying he has to. But, I'm not supporting someone who doesn't support my coach and my team. He has two options, he can continue mocking Hoke or he can get behind him. I have two choices, and I can assure you that both of those choices is paired with one of his. So, I'm leaving it up to him. He can either support the team or lose some readers. It's that simple.
And the owner of the site has an e-mail address which he reads. Airing his concerns on the board shows that the OP is just being petty and vindictive. If his concern was with the quality of the site and Brian's writing, he'd be best to e-mail to Brian rather than publishing it for the entire site to see.
The irony of this post is suffocating.
completely off topic and the kind of posting that the OP has made obvious is the kind that has driven him away.
... but you won't be a champion.
Completely contradictory and not well thought out........sigh.
It's been two days since a coaching change that seemed like it's taken the last 3 months to complete. Let people have reactions, rational or irrational, we'll all unite at some point.
And what exactly is a sissy point?
Did you really just play the "lack of Michigan family values" card and bail? Ok Justin...
Hopefully you'll be back, the rest of us will be waiting. If you're looking for a better place to go, good luck. Should some changes be made? Probably, but not on Brian's part. It's his blog and if you should be mad at anyone, it's the users (and I'm not excluding myself because I've posted some really dumb things). My guess is it's because we're a fan base who has had to go through quite a bit that we're not used to these past couple years (losing--a lot, NCAA allegations, coaching changes). This blog is a good way to get through it, even if it means some posts that are below the integrity of this board. So what you're seeing, we hope, is just a temporary way to cope with what's been going on as of late. Also, it's a blog. A better blog than the rest, but still a blog nonetheless. People will come around. But what the hell do I know, I haven't really been around that long.
P.S. I hear mlive's a good option.
I share your feelings in many ways, and I disagree with many things that Brian writes, but I've never felt the need to just quit the site in protest. If that's the way you feel, though, best of luck to you. I suppose that doing things like spending time with friends or family are more rewarding than mgoblog anyway.
I think that the response that Meeeechigan Dan is getting speaks volumes. Wendyk5, JimHarbaughScramble, and the others that go back to the haloscan days understand what the OP is saying. There is a problem with the boards and it takes someone to stand up and say it. I wouldn't advocate taking your ball and going home, but something has gone wrong.
Problem with the boards? Absolutely. But you can't expect an internet discussion board to be completely free of idiots who may occasionally generate an unpleasant tone.
Problem with Brian? I wholeheartedly disagree. What's the problem - that he rationally analyzed the situation and decided that a coach with a 47-50 career record and effectively 2 winning seasons wasn't qualified to coach at Michigan? That he's not pretending that everything is wonderful if he doesn't really believe it's the case? I literally have zero problem with anything Brian's written about the coaching carousel of late.
Go back and read his "Profiles in Cronyism" post about Brady Hoke 3 years ago and tell me you think his tenor has changed. Sheesh.
Honestly, I didn't see a whole lot of rational analysis of Hoke's candidacy on the front page before his hiring. It was more like "Here's 5 more reasons why this is a terrible idea," complete with cherry-picked statistics and quotations that make Hoke look bad. If you were to draw all your information on Hoke from Brian's articles, you probably wouldn't have known that he ran a spread offense at BSU, or that he used a variety of formations at SDSU - or that he's 25-13 over the past three seasons. Or that he was our designated West Coast recruiter when he was here, and landed Tom Brady. And this is a guy who demeans the MSM for "lazy reporting"!
I don't expect a board free of idiots. The best I can hope for is a tone set to marginalize the idiocy.
The problem is that the opinion has been based previously on copius amounts of analysis and thought. The ESPN scroll says that Hoke is 47-50. It's a complex situation with good aspects and bad aspects. Simplifying the discussion does it no justice on either side. This simplification in turn leads to even more simplified analysis on the boards or worse, just parroting Brian's ideas.
I was all for Rodriguez. I still wanted him to stay, even when the evidence was building at the end of the year. I have reservations about Hoke. I can also see the reason a change was necessary. It isn't a worry about the opinion expressed, which I have agreed with Brian on more than not, but the simplifications made to back up the arguments.
I can understand Brian's sentiments and his writing is inherently sarcastic when it's appropriate. The aspects of his disdain seem melodramatic and unfounded, though. I can understand not being excited about a hire, but not coming out and supporting the guy seems strange from someone who is obviously passionate about Michigan. There was also Joe Schad-like speculation of Denard leaving and the recruiting class imploding, etc. based enitrely on pessimism that eventually bordered on whining. I hope the tone changes soon. Brian should run his website the way he wants to, but the recent posts seem out of character to say the least.
it's an emo blog. he writes what many feel, but would not necessarily express publicly.
I guess that could be his stance. But he's also banned people for emo posts.
nor his opinion that he knows more than David Brandon on hiring people.
I think Meeechigan Dan could have made his point in a way that wasn't all Cartman-like, but I do think this site is built on the community having an intelligent conversation, and letting people know when they are beginning to rant versus discuss.
Watching the basketball game I was surprised that students have embraced this faster than random people commenting on a sports blog. I mean the cynical could just explain it away as people trying to be on TV, but then again they already would be on TV regardless, they are in the first 5 rows! They could have worn a banana costume and gotten on TV, but they chose to paint themselves blue with yellow letters spelling out Brady Hoke!
I definitely enjoyed this blog analyzing Rich Rodriguez, and I hope that when fall comes it will be analyzing Brady Hoke in the same exact way.
But for now I'm just hoping they talk more about basketball and hockey!
But....Those who stay will be champions
In my defense, I have class at 11. So I am up at 10.
I don't really get people who assume just because they didn't like the hire means they don't support Hoke as the coach. I didn't like the process, I didn't agree with the decision made. I still have my doubts about whether Brady Hoke can build a consistent winner here at UM. That being said after listening to him, I'm fired up and ready to run through a wall. I'll be at the Big House Sept 3(?) cheering till I have no more voice as we beat Western.
Hey Dan can I have your MgoPoints?
This is Brian's blog. He is entitled to his opinion in any way he wants. So I guess everyone putting their opinions about Brian's opinion makes you all hypocrits (can someone help me out on the spelling..ha?).
maybe it's the meth.
That word pairs nicely with a smile at 12:50am...
I can't really disagree with anything you've posted. I'm wondering right now where this site is headed.
Swim high, little dolphin. We'll just have to muddle on without you, somehow.
Thinking about how this site has changed, I'm wondering if it's simply due to the size/popularity now. It seems message board posters share a problem people with microphones have; they don't know when to shut up. Give people a mic and they tend to say far more than needs to be said, and with such a large audience here I see the same thing.
But I don't know what it takes to change the current culture. I'd imagine if people just didn't respond to most of the crap it would go away, but how do you get everyone to ignore all the garbage and not respond with negbombs and the like? Maybe moderation that deletes the topic from everyone but the posters view, so they think they are being ignored.
I understand the sentiment of the OP but I think it's logical for people (particularly Brian) who effectively spend their lives on Michigan football to react negatively to a coaching hire that was perceived at first to require another long transitional process. The perception seems to have changed somewhat since the announcement and I expect it will continue to change if/when Hoke starts to win games.
Just as I had predicted, massive mgoblog transfers with the arrival of the new coaching staff.
I feel like Brian has provided, and always has provided-a very strong counterpoint to the mainstream (read: Detroit) media. That's what he's doing now, providing a counterargument to what everyone else is writing. You may not agree, Brian may not even be right-but it's absolutely worth reading.
Bottom line: you're crazy to leave, and you're crazy if you don't think Brian's tone will change. Come on-seriously? Dude loves Michigan the same as we all do.
Also what is this "Brady Hoke is 10 times the man..." hyperbole? I don't even know what that means. Doubt you know the background and accomplishments of everyone on this site. I loved him today at the press conference and bball game-but he's a public figure and has a right to be scrutinized...
the "Hoke-y" post was from Misopogol (sp?). I re-read some of Brian's front page stuff and it appears that he is setting up an "I told you so" post for 2-3 years from now. He expects the team to get better with Hoke because of all those returning starters and the easier schedule. When RichRod haters say I told you so, Brian can respond by saying, "so what? that's what I thought would happen." Brian appears to be really hung up on the 47-50 record and the fact that Indiana and Minnesota turned Hoke down. I think that's reasonable. I think he's starting to come around a little bit (see the PAN chart, maybe one of Brady's main resume pluses.) I think IU and Minny said no thanks to Brady because they knew if he had any kind of reasonable success he would leave them for Michigan whenever he got the opportunity.
Regarding the cat stuff and the banner headlines, come on dude, have a sense of humor. I'm sure it will be gone in short order. If only Brady had dreads we could rework the banner as, "Hoke is a many dreaded thing." (It was something like that right? It's been awhile since the CC started.)
I think Brian will address this in the near future but let's remember he was the poster child for defending the program when no one else in the media was. He let on at the end of the season the constant barrage of negative emails and the negativity around the program was getting to him. He talked about how unfair it was to the players on the team, coming from so called "Michigan fans and boosters".
Now the tables have turned and it's hard for him to become united with the people who were the source of the negativity. In particular I (and I sense Brian) have a huge frustration with Lloyd Carr who is the one man who could've given Rodriguez some momentum and guidance instead acted jilted that one of his guys weren't hired. I loved Lloyd but his inaction during the last 3 years was an act of disloyalty that will never be forgotten by me.
If we all agreed on everything this blog would shut down. Brian knows what he is doing. No bathhouse male massage train would work around here. Maybe San Francisco. I have nothing to do with college football for awhile. Let's debate and learn more about Michigan from each other.
Agreed that the banner is some kind of fifth-rate knockoff of a Daily Show intro, and that Brian has generally lost his shit entirely about Brady Hoke and the coaching search. I think dude loved the Rodriguez era and its promise really hard, and he wasn't professional enough to pull the pieces together during the strain of the coaching search. More broadly, I think that Brian has serious trouble giving credence to notions such as toughness, competitive fire, etc., fixated as he is upon quantifiable data. (Data is good, and a fair number of cliches have been exploded thanks to this blog's erstwhile engineery feel, but I think there's more emotion and subjectivity to winning football games than Brian tends to acknowledge.) Anyway, that's a story for another day.
Not only does the banner speak to content on the front page that's generally dovetailing with the pure dreck that's been on the MGoBoard lately, it's just not funny at all. Really fucking lame, Cook - I hope you were drinking when you cooked it up.
Exactly. this appears to have become way way too personal with Brian. I get surprised when I see people lose their objectivity and get really emotional and unstable about a damn football team.
Guys like Brian, jmblue, tom hagen, they catch me off guard, when they do their 180 act in such an unstable overly emotional manner.
OMG!!! Michigan football is doing something I don't like. Gag me with a spoon already:)
I'm going to miss you Meechigan Dan. Before I joined, you were one of my favorite guys to read (okay, not 100% of the time but you were up there). MGo's going to be a little colder and emptier without you. If you change your mind, you're always welcome back here.
It's been one day...
Hoke will receive full support. You know this. Know who your friends are brethren!
I love this site because this is the very place where passionate fans can come and drop some knowledge, neg bomb the stupidity, and despite huge 'disagreeables' (Hokey Talk) most of us respect one another at the end of the day. I mean come'on, have you scoped out any of the other fan sites? Hopeless! (well, the one's with the hot cheerleaders and women athletes are nice...pics only please!)
If you fill the need to step away from the blog for a few no biggie. Just remember where you came from and the countless days of good humor, excellent diaries, and great peeps this site represents.
And who provided that environment for you? His name is Brian.
Nobody gives a flip about you.
Yeah, the same thought had also crossed my mind, but then I decided I want to be around for the parade when FuMan Blue gets back into positive territory. A comeback for the ages!!
It just seems to me like the rules have changed.
When former players (not random yahoos on the tubes) said negative things about rr, the response was:
"None of this helps. Dave Brandon is an adult and won't be swayed by talk radio, so all speaking out like that does is provide another PR hit against the program. It's juvenile. Suck it up and wait until this year is over.'
and i dont like undermining any future hoke success with stuff like "A completely average coach should be able to take 20 returning starters on a 7-6 team that sees the schedule ease considerably and get to 9-3". Sounds a LOT like the same crap we used to hear about rr that was so soundly lambasted in this space
We all just get along?
I also would have gone with "Why can't we be friends?" but I want really feeling it.
Seriously though, this too shall pass, and I hope you'll be back M. Dan. Enjoy the vacation.
This site is the best for up-to-date information on Michigan sports and all other sports. The great thing is that you have thousands of users reading information on the web and post relevant information. It is the best site to get breaking news. Also, the time and effort people put in to diaries, photoshops, etc. is unbelievable. The research for some of these things take hours. I am always amazed at the effort that people expend to put out quality content for no other gain than peer applause, and I thank you for that.
With that said, I do think that the general tone has become more negative. The losing is very frustrating because we are the winningest football progam. Additionally, electronic written communication can not have the subtle body language cues that lessen the blow of harsh words. That is why people use emoticons and "/s" and other conventions to decrease the harshness. This is a great site, and all contributors are useful-even those who post poorly as they remind us of the stark contrast to the many great ones here.
I have been a reader for a while, but usually don't post. Last night was the exception as I was at full throttle from being full of sushi, sake and beer. Recently, I have felt the need to post to combat the negativity. M-Wolverine has been leading the charge for positivity for Hoke, and I think we should all thank him. Watch the Hoke presser. The man has charisma. You cannot manufacture or buy that. He looks people in the eye. He is genuine. He knows his limitations and will hire great people to make up for those. Football is a game of emotion. Data can be wrong. The data by Mathlete and others had us winning all but 2 games this season with a too close to call bowl game. Well, we know how that worked out. Believe in Hoke. Cheer for Michigan. Go Blue.
Long time listener/admirer; first (second-ish) time poster.
Look past the (kitten) jokes and snark on the banner (which have always, in one form or another, been a part of this blog) and you'll find legitimate, adult, good-faith arguments staring you in face on the front page regarding Brady Hoke, etc.
Fans (yes, even the non-athletic types) are allowed to be something short of ebullient over this hire, at least for the moment. If the mere exposure to a contrary point of view is stealing your joy, fine, but understand that the moron/child here isn't Brian. It's you: the guy throwing ad hominem on his way out the door.
Brady Hoke may turn out to be ten times the man of any author on this site, but I'll bet Brady Hoke knows how to take a (kitten) joke without having a fit. The only person throwing an interent tantrum here is you. Grow up.
I could use some of your Mgopoints.. Just handful or so.
so Brian has some doubts about the hire, and thus you won't read mgoblog anymore?
Waitaminute, this from the guy whose blogs include:
I reference those not to mock you but to point out that I thought you were one of the guys who got it.
Seriously, you are one of the posters who if you're unhappy, I seriously question what we're doing. And I spent much of the morning before work today doing just that. Still, I don't think there's anything wrong with MGoBlog's coverage and tone of the Brady Hoke hire. Irreverence is part of the show here.
I work in mainstream media during the day, and understand the reasons behind the conscious decisions to do things that annoy the piss out of guys like me and Brian (and yourself). In the case of a new coaching hire, the unstated rule is huge positivity, even if unwarranted, because the fans are trying to make up their minds. It's the same reason political parties fall all over themselves to show love for the guy/gal tagged to be that party's next presidential candidate, even after an ugly battle to get there.
People don't just come to media to learn; as often or more they're seeking confirmation of their biases, and satisfaction of the experiencing self. As gratification in reading media has shifted more and more toward the "instant" instead of the long-term memory, media itself has shifted to become more about temporary gratification than informance, which is a long-term gratification structure. In other words, you're looking for an ice cream cone, not an ice cream maker.
This is humanity when it comes to most complex concepts:
Now say your job is to get as many readers as possible. Why in the world would you market toward the people in the white?
It has been the goal of this blog to buck that trend, and use irreverence as the sugar. My use of a mock German accent in saying "iz gud, yes?" isn't just childishness, but a calculated demonstration of casualness to keep the tone of the piece light. The point of my "Hoke-y" piece was to demonstrate the greatest plus about Hoke: that he is someone the Michigan fraternity will rally around, and also demonstrate the all-too-predictable reactions from around the country. What we won't do is present an opinion not based in factual evidence. At times, it's not as gratifying as mainstream's party line, but it's the blog's raison d'etre and not going to change.
Since when did MGoBlog's tone have to be mainstream, Dan? The single most valuable thing about this site's editorial code is that it's not re-tread. Sports journalism has become such that the new NCAA FB videogames literally generate those articles. There is no lazy redundancy here -- themes are deep and metaphors fresh and the information is the kind that takes work to put together. And when there's a catastrophe -- like a coaching search in mid-January that ends with a gamble hire we could have had any day -- it gets cats.
But to Brian/MGoBlog? Those don't usually work out very well. Not really ever (unless the guy burned down your house or something, which, in that case, it's probably the right choice)
EDIT: you're a valuable poster who should take a few days, as Brian will, and let things settle
I didn't get any fish.
How about a Towel? You always need a towel...
posts have I seen over the years? Rivals, Scout probably all the way back to Sandeep's board. Long a follower of the blog, I've only recently starting perusing the board.
I don't know whats worse the whiny farewell posts or the posts in support. Are you kidding me? If you want to call it day because you dont like reading people who have viewpoints that you don't like, fine, disappear, but these self righteous goodbyes to see how many people will miss you...gimme a break..its the stuff of 6 year olds.
And whats with all the grief for Brian. I've long been a follower of this blog because he was one of the only voices out there that could do anything but support the status quo. While the Rivals and Scout board's were shouting down dissent, and the Balas' and the Beaver's were getting their ban on, this guy told it like he saw it and in my opinion mostly like it was. I assumed a board on such a blog would be filled with similar spirits, but from my admittedly short time here that does not seem to be the case.
Brian has an opinion and I for one hope he continues to express it however he sees fit and hopefully he'll continue to do it in a way that sometimes clever or funny and usually interesting.
I keep telling myself I'm not going to check this site as much each day, but it never happens. Take care and hope to see you back when you feel the time is right.
