Submitted by Dientrous on

i was just thinking about how im looking forward to the spring game....but really, how am i supposed to be watching it? what am i supposed to be rooting for? because if the offense has a really nice play or drive, it means the defense didnt and vice versa...so what will you be hoping to see? because really, i have no idea what i should be hoping for

Kudos to you sir, for coming up with that one!

Did we really need another thread asking the same question ?Just be excited you are watching men in winged helmets playing and no matter what happens, its all good.

Considering that we know our offense is capable of functioning, I would look for our defense to be able to stop them.

Solid tackling, no big plays unless the offensive player does the juke of the century, etc.

You are rooting for it not to rain, hoping for everyone to make it through the last practice without a major injury and that you get to be in Michigan Stadium watching football in April with (hopefully) more than 75,000 of your closest friends.

A General Philosophy For Watching This Thing

Other than "have a good time with the closest thing to football you'll see in months": paradoxically, you'll probably learn the most by observing the players you've already seen a lot of, because those players will be going up against other Michigan players you don't know anything about and you'll have a baseline to compare them against. Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of one-on-one matchups that promise to put an experienced player up against a noob, especially if they don't run ones versus ones. If and when they do:

* Taylor Lewan is likely to be blocking a blitzing Craig Roh, Ryan Van Bergen, or Greg Banks.
* Troy Woolfolk will probably be locked up on an inexperienced wide receiver much of the time he's out there (if he's out there much at all).
* Will Campbell will contend with a couple of guards who we've seen play.
* Experienced tight ends will be going up against Michigan's new spurs and recently deployed linebacker Craig Roh.

Other than that, I'll be doing what most people will: anxiously attempting to see Denard Robinson's rumored improvement, trying to figure out what's up with Justin Turner, doing a hype check on everyone named Gordon, and hoping like hell the first defense seems tough to run against and not particularly prone to giving up the big play. Seeing the 3-3-5 in extended action will be interesting, as well. Also there's that Devin Gardner guy and the tailback war.

Here's what I'll be rooting for:

1. Taylor Lewan owning the LT spot.
2. Pass break-ups for Floyd and Turner.
3. A few explosion into the backfield plays by Big Will.
4. Ezeh/Mouton in position making solid tackles.
5. Emilien/Gordon not giving up any big plays.
6. Three QBs all playing solid.
7. No fumbles, a few INTs ok.

As you can see I'm a bit slanted toward solid D play for the game. My concern level going into the season is 80/20 defense.

And celebrate when something cool happens. This means you may have to cheer when a catch as made at the 1 yard line and then immediately make as much noise as possible to encourage a goal line stand.

Try my approach: Don't give a shit because it has almost zero impact on what'll actually happen in the fall, and instead hope for some commitments, perhaps from Hart or Zettel. I don't recommend this approach for everyone, but in your case I think it's just the thing.

You should definitely root for Sagesse, he is a Canadian and maybe Fitzgerald Toussaint, he sounds like a foreigner. This will enable you to not have to root for any stupid, arrogant Americans playing Futbol
