So called Michigan fans rooting against the team.

Submitted by Griff88 on

Over the past few days, I have heard Michigan fans rooting against the team. Today I heard some on the radio, sorry that Michigan won to become bowl eligible. All this because these so called fans don't want Rich Rodriguez as coach.

It's one thing to be critical of the way things have gone. Many fans aren't happy, and understandably so. Coach Rodriguez is not without blame. He deserves heat for the mistakes he has made. The missteps with defensive recruiting. The defensive staff he has put together. These are just a couple of legitimate criticisms, there are others. However, whatever reasons may exist... it doesn't justify rooting against the team you supposedly love.

Those kids played their hearts out today. They could have folded any number of times, but they didn't. That speaks to not only their character, but how much they believe in the man that is leading them. To have people who call themselves Michigan fans root against them and spit on their effort, to take joy out of their misfortune, to wish ill on the program... you people are vultures who are front runners, masquerading as Michigan fans.

You don't like Rich Rodriguez, fair enough. However, if you are rooting against those kids wearing the winged helmet, just to see him fail... you should be ashamed of yourselves.

This team is special, and I believe that the head coach plays a role in that. These kids play for each other and believe in each other. They are truly a team, a unit, and they deserve FANS that will support them and their hard work and desire to bring Michigan back to its rightful place in college football.  For anyone who calls him or herself a Michigan fan and wishes that these 18-22 year old young men would not succeed in their efforts simply because of the head coach, find another team to root for, and quit rooting against ours.

I heard the same comments on the Detroit sports talk station.  Once caller asked, "is it wrong to root against Michigan so RR would be fired"?  The host said, "no, its a free country"

I would like to make a few points about that.  The caller claimed to be a Michigan fan.  My question is if someone is a Michigan fan, why do you want them to loose?  As Bo always said, there is no player or no coach above the team.  These people want Michigan to loose so RR can be fired?  Are you kidding me.  Lets root for a Michigan Victory and let David Brandon worry about RR.

These players are student-althetes, and "student" is the first word.  There are about 115 players on the roster and only about half of them that dress for each game.  Many of these are scout team players that will never get into the game.  So there are about 30-40 players that play on a regular basis.  Of these, only about 5-10 will make an NFL team.  So 100 players are playing for the love of the game and the love of the school.  Many of these players could have been starters at D2 schools but chose to stay at Michigan.  These players are putting their heart and soul into the game and school they love.

I heard many fans boo Gibbons when he missed the kick.  I asked them have they ever kicked a football.  He is not getting paid and he will never make pro.  He has classes just like the rest of the others.  He is trying his very best.  Does it meet Michigan Standards?  No but I am not going to call him a loser because he isnt the greatest.  Oh and he is listed as a RS Fr too.

I was on the "Fire RR" wagon.  But after the game while I listed to many Walmart Wolverines say they rooted for Michigan to lose, I has softened my position on RR.  I have not softened my position on anyone who roots for Michigan to loose just so RR will get fired.  These people have no idea what love of the game and love of the school is. These are young men who really doesnt care about who the coach is.

So all you Walmart Wolverines who root for Michigan to lose can kiss my maize and blue ass and please do not enter the Big House again.  It is a special place of worship for those who root for a Michigan Victory each and every Saturday regardless of the coach or team record.

And as always GO BLUE

Because 90% of the Walmart Wolverines I meet (I'm assuming they are WW because they don't act like entitled, clueless fucks) are fully in support of Rich Rodriguez.

I my experience it's usually the pampered, key dangling alumni that find Rich Rod UNACCEPTABLE!

I suppose it takes all kinds though.

Jabberwock....I dont have any data to support any conclusions but I would guess that most WW only want Michigan to win and dont care about the school, the student-athletes, the band and most importantly the students.  They all want a band wagon to jump on.  So when we are having a down couple of years, they all want Michigan to loose so Brandon will fire the Coach?  I just dont get it.  Being a Wolverine is so much more than football wins.

I have been catching hell the past few years and I keep telling people that football is only one aspect of what a "Wolverine" is.  I would certainly wish our kids win every game.  I have an opinion about RR but this is not my decision.  Let Brandon handle RR and we root for a Michigan Victory.

All I have to say is that everyone recite the lyrics to "Varisty" and the line...."we're here for you".   So how can anyone who claims to be a Wolverine to root for them to loose????

Oh for all you Walmart Wolverines...."Varsity" was the fight song for about 10 years.  How about learning it as well as the "Yellow and Blue"

Heard some of those calls on the radio after the game...more interested in being right than winning. It was nice to see you could post against it, but realize people can be critical, but still support the team, and yes, even the coach. Because it works both ways too...one of the very first posts after the game was a "what do you think of Rich now" post, and I couldn't help but thinking...we win a glorious, exciting, historic game...and the first thing you think to do after it is "I told you so"? Too many people would rather be right to the detriment of the program than be happy.

I was listening to WTKA on the way home from the game. They were talking about people emailing in comments and saying that they were upset that Michigan had won because they wanted RR gone. (It may have only been one email, not sure.) This=FAIL. I was really impressed the way that this team never gave up and kept on fighting. Wanting Michigan to lose is UNACCEPTABLE. Everyone should be proud of the effort put forth by the team today. GO BLUE!

Usually a coward, who'll call up right at the end of any program, so there's no way anyone can call in to rebut him.  And yeah, I could ALMOST have respect for him if he just had strong feeling against the Rich Rod regime, as wrong minded as they might be.  But he just gets off on being a contrarian ass.  For all his love of the "old days" (and I have loved me some old days) he was the first one to jump on Lloyd and his staff too.  He thinks it makes him cool to be the voice of opposing opinion, when all it does is make him the Drew Sharp of callers. (Which he would probably take as a compliment).

I've often contemplated emailing in to be on the Beatniks roundtable...under the caveat I only want to be on if Dave is on too.  Just so I can do what Brian did when he used to call into his show, and tear down each and every argument he makes (which no one else seems to want or bother to do).  But I'm not really much of a caller, so I probably don't have much of an in.  You'd probably be a more likely candidate.

For me, its about the players and the team.  I want them to win because they represent our University with integrity and hard effort.  The coaches are trying their best too.  Barwis was actually wiping a tear and then went to hug Fred Jackson after the 2pt conversion stop to win the game.

....if you ask me. The very fact that our offense is one of the top O's in the nation and can score in one play at times, has made watching the games exciting, even if their is much angst in watching our D play.

Today, even with Illinois putting up mega points, it was exciting watching the whole game. Our D made some great plays, even if they weren't consistent in stopping Illinois. Before the game, I would have given us very little chance of beating them. I think their D is one of the better ones in the B10 and our O had their way with them when we weren't shooting ourselves in the foot.

If our D only improves half as much as Illinois' did between last year and this year, with our offense rolling we are going to be hard to beat.

I have heard Michigan fans rooting against the team.

Correction - you've heard jerks rooting against the team.

If you root against this team, you are not a fan.  Period.  End of story.   it's one thing to not like RR and quite another to want them to lose.

I'd dare any one of those jerks saying they want UM to lose to go up to Mike Martin and tell him to his face that they want him to lose.

There were a couple "fans" up near the top of Section 25 today with signs. Around the time we tied it up, they left. Good riddance to them, and I hope they never step foot in our stadium ever again. If you can't stick around to see your team become bowl eligible on a record-shattering game becuase you hate the coach that much, you are not a fan, and you do not deserve to step foot on any square foot of land called Ann Arbor. Get out and stay out...

Well said.  People don't like change, especially when the status quo seemed to be working.  They looked at the last 40 years and said "the team always wins, why change it?" without realizing that sometimes even the best machines break down over time.  I'm not saying that RR was the best coach for this program; I don't anyone can ever be 100% sure about something like that for any coach.  But what I do know is that while his defenses have been sub-par, this team has the type of offense that will allow it to compete against any team in the country on any day, and that is frankly something that we couldn't always say.  It might not be a better situation than during the heyday of Carr, but it is different, and right now that can be scary.

Also, some people are just trolls and like to start controversies because they have nothing better to do than wish ill-will upon 20-year-olds playing a game.

The radio trolls were out in full force after the game today.

I think the hosts had already written their talking points expecting a Michigan loss, and were too lazy to change them to fit the actual outcome.

I hugged the woman next to me (who was there with her husband and two kids) for a good 5-7 seconds after the 2-pt stop, at which point we both pulled back, looked at each other, and laughed.  It was a little awkward yet a moment of pure and total elation.

If you weren't happy enough to jump into the arms of a total stranger after watching today's game, I don't know which game you were watching, but it wasn't the one that took place in Michigan Stadium.  These "fans" should make their way down the nine mile trip to Ypsilanti and pack RYNEARSON STADIUM.

I want to kick people like that in the nuts as hard as I can.  Then, when they slowly get back to their feet after 30 mins of agony, kick them in the nuts as hard as I can, again.

I knew it had gotten bad, but I can't imagine ever cheering for Michigan to lose.  Even if I rationalize before an OSU game by saying "the year is already ruined, this wouldn't be a bad year to lose to OSU," I would never actually cheer for them to lose.

I wish these "fans" would go find a nice Sparty to grace with their "support."

I wanted RR to be fired but I had lost faith after the Penn State debacle. Now that we are likely going to end up 7-5 I have enough faith to shut up. Today Penn State looked great against NW, coming back from 21-0 to win 35-28. Perhaps our loss to them was due to them playing well.

face a walk-on QB last week, but wow, McGloin looks pretty good actually. Is it possible that for whatever reason, the PSU coaches simply mis-identified which guy allowed them the best opportunity to win? Coaches aren't always perfect either.

They may have made some mistakes but this team showed great heart overcoming it all and getting the win. I'm very proud of my team and coach. Keep on improving and playing hard the remaining three games of the season. We may finish this season 7-5 or 8-4.

These kids had their collecive backs against the wall today, were blamed for holding the team back all season (in the case of the D), picked themselves off the mat, and found a way to win.  After the past few weeks when the comebacks came up just short, it was great to see them pull it off.

(Plus to watch the O, esp. Tate, going crazy for the D in OT was awesome...)

people who have said almost exactly "i don't want us to win anymore games because if we do, richrod might stay around." followed shortly by "if we had harbaugh, we'd be in the national title game in 3 years. EASY"

i for one agree. i will not stand for having an offense that scores 67 points. moar harbaugh! right meow!

Got one at our tailgate.  The truly funny thing is that he's the dude that never went to school here and he's the guy going to the games with his Uncle's ticket cause he doesnt have one of his own.  I swear to God we're gonna go at it before the year is done cause I'm going to get drunk enough to not remember he's "family" and I'm going to punch him in the mouth.

Consider this an apology in advance Gary for our fight before the Wisconsin game.........
