who was very close to Bo has a good relationship with RR or not?? I also wonder what Brandstetters real opinion is on RR, especially as close to Bo and LC as he was. Does RR have any advocacy, other than Rick Leach, in the local area?

I work at a local Ann Arbor Country Club where many of the wealthiest M football fans belong (the kind who donate a lot of money, and sit with Bill Martin in his luxury box many fall Saturdays) Believe it or not they seem calm and rational about the Coaching change. They know it is going to take a few years for RR to mold the program into his style. Many were fed up with the waning conditioning of the previous regime's athletes, working the athletes hard isn't much of a problem as long as it produces wins. If RR is 3-9 again this year (he won't be) all will be dandy, he has plenty of support for at least 2 more years.

was one of Bo's two favortie coaches (I assume not at UofM), Im pretty sure most people in the AD for football like Rich Rod. Bo and Don Nehelen were also good friends. Im sure if Bo approving of someone went a long way in the eyes of most in the AD.

Not that it did not happen, just do not recall it. I know Nehlen and Bo were close (BTW, I dated Nehlens daughter Vicky in HS), so there may be the connection. I am really just wondering if there is a local support structure, as part of the "olde garde" like Brandy, Shane, Leach, Beckman, and not to forget Lloyd.. that would be RR advocates?

I've been out of the area so long I don't know. If so, do you think he still has the "[email protected]" account he had at the WDFN? Hope Brian has already emailed him the link to mgoblog and Stoney will be a man and call out these guys on their allegations... then again it is fence sitting Stoney...

Honestly, these guys need to be presented with the web address of MGoBlog and be encouraged to read Brian's work, maybe take some notes. If they intend to hold the Freep sports team out as one of integrity and professionalism, they're going to have to permit their less than adequately researched piece to be followed up with a rebuttal. That's what a good newspaper does, and if done well, maybe Rosey and Snyder even uncover a good story and do some good for Division 1 football. No malice, no venom or fisticuffs...I'd just want to present those two with an opportunity to do their job well. If they do, that's great. If not, then the guys are failures at their profession. No insult I can hurl at them can sting any worse than the truth of the matter. EDIT- Anyone else hear Rosenberg's call-in on ESPN this afternoon? Jesus Christ, I was foaming at the mouth. The only thing worse than a "journalist" who writes drivel without doing his homework is one who then speculates unfounded assertions at whim when given a stage.

... Stoney (and every last one of us) looks at this from all sides. WLA had a good and thoughtful perspective, as did Jim Carty, Adam Rittenberg and Doc Sat. I think there are better and more interesting stories here than the one that, as Brian says, was (at least somewhat) uncritically reported, but I think we may be kidding ourselves if we don't think that a) there probably were technical violations, b) as described, Sunday itineraries - even if possibly explained away - could have easily blown past the 4-hr max, c) there are/will be fissures in the program that are still at least festering. These reporters may have been able to put out a better story and I won't say bias didn't creep in, but skewering these reporters as unprofessional is neither a criticism most of us are qualified to level, nor does it make a good case that there is nothing to be worried about here.

but I think we may be kidding ourselves if we don't think that a) there probably were technical violations, b) as described, Sunday itineraries - even if possibly explained away - could have easily blown past the 4-hr max, I doubt it; did you see the Youtube video of RR talking at Schembechler Hall, taken by one of the people doing the group tour? He talked to the people and answered questions for about 20 minutes, at one point showing the group a copy of their practice schedule for the day; it was impressive, everything is extremely organized, and planned to the minute, and I would E-ssume followed very closely. I doubt very much that the coaches would not have the time properly allotted. There does seem to be much more emphasis put on voluntary workouts and team organized seven on sevens though.

that's why we need to see a well researched rebuttal. With the limited point and counter-point that's taken place so far, the logic that's gained traction supporting Rosey is that at worst, RR's staff violated NCAA rules re: practice time and coerced players into "voluntary" workouts over the summer. At best for RR's staff, no violations were committed at all and Rosey manufactured a story using naive freshmen and discontented former players as sources. Reading between the lines, the conclusion I'm willing to draw is that perhaps RR and his staff walk a too-thin line between coercion and volunteerism re: NCAA standards for practice time allotment. But more than likely, this inference is far from being RR specific, or even sport specific. From the beginning, I've wanted to see a bigger sample of NCAA players. My opinion on the matter is shaped with admiration for hard-ass coaching and players who respect a tradition of athletic discipline. Bo lost 65 players in year one...without beating a dead horse, there are some awesome parallels to draw between legendary and current coach. "Those who stay will be champions", right? When you completely overhaul a team, serious work has to be done. Players have to commit, and for Christ's sake, a football team is NOT a democracy. My player expectation would be for a hard, hard grind in the first few years of a new coaching era. You're Coach Rod's soldier, going through boot camp. How hard do you want to work to get as strong as possible, as quickly as possible? Highest GPA in 20 years, the best conditioned football team Michigan has seen in years, freshman players willing to put in the work...God Bless Coach Rod.

Saying "ABC" might be over inflating this a bit for people... you should probably change it to "Channel 7 Detroit" or something, I first clicked on this thread thinking fucking Nightline had picked this up.

Writer does hack job, puts in a bunch of BS and gets rewarded with a TV spot? Therein lies the problem. The Freep is getting a ton of attention for this.

Considering how poorly the media reports things in regards to UofM football (don't forget the lack of research with the "Gentlemen's Agreement" slander on Rodriguez), I have lost all faith in the media to report anything properly.

Jesus these guys look like fucking NERDS. Not cool nerds, either. Anyway, it's clear to me watching this Rosenberg hasn't read the NCAA rules text we've seen posted on this website. His smugness pissed me off so much.

They know this would/is a huge story regardless of how major the violations - if true - are, and used this as a chance to get their names out there.

Rosenberg is such a douchebag. How many times do you think the little d-bag got his ass kicked in high school?

For those of us that live out of state could you recap the program? Did the interviewing reporter grow a pair and ask specific questions or was it just another confirmation of the vaugness?

MGoAndy

August 31st, 2009 at 12:13 AM ^

Confirmation of vagueness. The interviewer didn't ask anything hard hitting. Rosenberg and Synder recapped the allegations of exceeding practice limits, and seemed very convinced something would come of it - they were proud. Cited Terrance Taylor's quote as some kind of gold mine. Leyden did ask about the context of the Stokes/Hawthorne quotes, and Rosenberg said he was very straightforward [didn't mention the article, which he implied was in the works at the time] and asked them to lay out their schedules. It pissed me off, to say the least.

I was amazed at the shoddy interview; they really didn't explain the rules thoroughly with no mention that much of the activity could be considered non-countable (rehab, meals, etc.) or voluntary (lifting). Then again it was only approximately 5 minutes long on a sports recap show, so I guess I shouldn't expect a genuinely good interview.

for many years. He has been a head coach for at least the last eight years. Most of his staff has been with him for the majortity of the time. The other staffers, QC people and S&C staff have been in this business for years. Does it make any sense at all that they would forget the rules once they came to AA. Basically, some jackass reporters trying to save their dying newspaper are trying to dig up dirt on the biggest fish they can find. In the end this will be proven to be a non-issue. If RR documents his practices and time commitments to the detail that he does, don't you think everyone on his staff knows what the rulkes are and that they must be followed. This seems like disgruntled ex-players and non-Michigan Men trying to get back at the guy that closed their country club. This too shall pass and come Saturday night we will be victorious and on our way to a great season. GO BLUE!

I doubt Rodriguez forgot the rules when he came to AA. He probably played in the grey areas of "mandatory" vs. "voluntary" time about the same as he did at WVU, much as coaches at most other BCS football programs do (though maybe to a greater extent: IDK). In this case, some of the veteran players noticed a stark difference in the time they felt required to spend on football related activities and enough of them were upset enough about it, and potentially other issues, to speak about it. Likewise, there are members of the media who feel that RR runs the program his way without regard for tradition, those outside the program and, occasionally, his own players. Some also feel he plays a little fast and loose with the rules and doesn't understand how the culture is different at Michigan. Well, the media is part of the culture, too, and for those in the media who thought RR would eventually get in trouble, there is an element of self-fulfilling prophecy. There are clearly gray areas in the activities that count toward NCAA maximums and those that don't just as there are ways to comply with the letter of the rule, though not the intent, regarding voluntary vs mandatory activities. It seems pretty clear that Michigan under RR - like many BCS programs - plays in those gray areas. The reporters may not have done a good enough job to sketch that nebulous gray cloud for us, instead implying that Michigan has crossed a brightline, but it's evident Michigan is further into the gray than it was at least in the waning years of its former coach. Whether or not there will be any violations and any sanctions has much to do with how easily Michigan can explain away the gray (to the NCAA!) by counting hours, etc. It will also depend, as these reporters rightly point out, what, if anything, players say to the NCAA should it ask.

"they are acting like they just uncovered watergate" THOSE WERE MY EXACT THOUGHTS!!!! Holy hell... These guys just oozed a nauseating sense of smug self-importance!! I had an overwhelming desire to punch both these guys in the face throughout the whole thing. These guys are seriously the douchiest of douches. They ran with a story that they had very few facts about, and where it wasn't clear at all that there was a violation of a very vague rule that obviously neither them nor their sources have a very good understanding of, that scandalizes and potentially sabotages the football program (100s of people), and all so they can make a name for themselves. You could tell they were just loving every minute of it, eating up their time in the spotlight. These are truly, truly disgusting human beings, and hopefully they and up getting a major karmic bitch slap when all is said and done. I'm just beyond outraged by all this.

I would have to agree with maizeandbluedevi, this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. If we get penalized then tOSU should have major penalties for maurice clarrett, and troy smith.
