We couldn't stop their big man, we couldn't rebound, we couldn't make clutch free throws, we couldn't make layups, and our big men couldn't stop fouling. Please, explain what you think "tough" means, because nothing I saw demonstrated toughness. Talent, yes. Toughness, hell no.
Yep that was choke job. We got crushed on the boards and if we make free throws we still would have won. We played with a lot of intensity today which I thought was missing the previous 10 games or so. I'm pissed and I wish I could solve the rebounding problem but I still feel good about the effort.
It is going to be a while before I can forget about the last minute of that game though.
I'm pretty sure half the board would commit mesageboard suicide if they lived through the back-to-back NC losses with the Fab Five. It was a great game, we got screwed by a no-call, but in the end you have to make your damn free throws. It's not glamorous, but this team is most likely by far Beilein's worst FT% team in years.

I am fully prepared for the downvote into Bolivia, but here goes. We choked, plain and simple. The game was ours, and we let them have it. They didn't take it, we gave it.
After every loss, I revisit the 1989 team, the one that got blown out by Illinois twice and lost to Division 3 Alaska-Anchorage. They won it all, so, I say then - why not us? We've got issues, but we've seen a tumultuous season, lots of teams have issues.
I'm looking forward to seeing Michigan match up with some non-Big Ten teams.

The big ten was loaded that year, but college basketball has changed so much, I'm not sure your statistical comparison is valid.

Surprised that UM didn't go with two bigs on Indiana's last possession. It was clear that Indiana was going inside and UM, like the rest of the game, had no answer for it.

I am a huge fan of all Michigan sports but I get cranky after losses...

One last thing: Why can't we aggressively try to get the ball to Stauskas on the inbounds play when the game is do or die at the stripe? I know Burke is Clutch McNasty most of the time, but it's hard to argue when you compare Burke's 79% FT rate with Stauskas' 85% FT rate.
I just got back from the game. Aside from the fact that we choked it away, did I miss a rule change that orders a foul on Michigan every time Cody Zeller goes into the post?
with all the calls against our big men guarding zeller. i mean honestly this was ridiculous, get some consistency ffs. w/o all the touch calls we're up by 10 instead of 5 at the end there, though i guess that still wouldn't have guaranteed a victory...

That hurt. Can anyone remember the last game that we WON or tied a game on a buzzer-beater? There and Evan effing Turner, Backboard Ahmadenijad, and Brust this year. We've had some late heroics, but I can't remember the last true buzzer-beater. Anyone?
Over the last 5-10 years, Michigan football and basketball have pretty much continually blown it in late game situations. It's been very frustrating to watch. This year alone we have ND, South Carolina, and Ohio State in football, and Wisconsin, PSU, and now Indiana is basketball. You'd think we be due soon, but the punches just keep coming.

Last year football: Under the Lights vs. Notre Dame, Ohio State, Virginia Tech. Late game clinchers.
This year football: Northwestern, Michigan State. Late game clinchers.
Last year basketball: Michigan State, Ohio State, all of our freaking overtime wins against Northwestern (x2) and Minnesota. Late game clinchers.
This year basketball: Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue. Late game clinchers.

Let's evaluate this a little more carefully:
1. Notre Dame UTL - Clutch performance against a team that ended up losing 5 games. Amazing!
2. OSU football - Now are you referring to the first penalty that negated a touchdown, or the second one that put the non-game-winning FG back to 40 yards? Or perhaps you are referring to the late blown coverage that left Posey wide open down the sideline and almost cost us the game? But no, you're absolutely right. Beating a 6-loss team on a play not in the last 3 minutes was huge.
3. MSU football - Beating a 6-loss team on a last-second FG after not scoring a TD. Awesome.
4. Va Tech - Blown call negates a TD on their end, kicker misses a FG. Gibbons hits a routine FG for the win. Not exactly a miraculous last-second comeback.
5. Northwestern, Minnesota, and Purdue - No comment here is really needed. You just cited victories over Northwestern, Minnesota, and Purdue.
6. This year OSU, MSU, and Purdue basketball - Are you referring to the two missed free throws by McGary that kept MSU in the game? The miss FT from Hardaway that kept OSU alive? The pass that Purdue fumbled away right to Burke?
Face it, most of your examples are either against shitty teams, teams that handed us the game on a silver platter (like Va Tech), or teams that we beat in spite or huge mistakes in the final minutes. Tell me, when is the last time Michigan has performed really well down the stretch against an excellent opponent? It just doesn't happen. Basketball has lost the last 12 against top 5 teams. Football hasn't won a big game against an elite team in about a decade. Michigan teams keep shitting the bed against quality opponents, and it's getting old. Quit blowing sunshine.

Your negative Nancy shtick is truly getting old. Kindly refer to your previous post and point out, oh where, it refers only to last-minute victories against GOOD teams. It's not even a defensible retort really, since you're the one who brought up this year's PSU basketball game, and I highly doubt you would tout them as a "quality" team. Viva revisionist arguments, I guess.

In the last couple years football we've lost the UTL game when ND scored with 30 seconds left - that SUCKED!. MSU home game after we didn't even score a TD? BCS game on a missed last-second FG. Can't believe the way NW intercepted our last second pass.
Basketball with Craft hitting two FTs to win the game in AA. Trey Burke stealing the ball but missing that dunk last week against MSU.
I hate to lose these last second games - blown chances. We suck.
Right. Tons of late-game heroics, all of which has been awesome. But when was our last TOUCHDOWN MANNINGHAM-pulling-the-game-out-just-as-the-clock-hits-zero moment?

I've only seen a few teams blow a two-possesion lead with the ball in the final minute. I still can't believe that happened. Based purely on stats, there was a about a 6% chance that THJ and Burke would both miss the front end, and of course it happened. It fits perfectly with the 2% statistical chance Wisconsin would win, and the >1% chance PSU would come back from 15 down. This team continues to beat the odds in a very bad way.
Here are the final shooting percentages:

The free throw shooting aside for the moment, this is one of the more interesting stats to me - from this standpoint (highlighted), we outshot them overall by a slight margin. That sort of gets to me a bit admittedly. It was just that close statistically.
The offensive rebounding has been better and was much better in this game than Purdue and slightly better than Michigan State, but overall, it's still a problem that I see - Indiana had 47 total rebounds to our 26. That being said, we did many of the right things - we were aggressive and got steals and blocks (more than Indiana, in each case), and we controlled the ball well enough (only 6 turnovers to their 14), and overall, it was a defensive performance that I had wished we'd seen a few more times.
With that, we're the 5-seed, and I believe that means we get a potential revenge game against Penn State. I'll take that possibility. 26 wins in 31 games including a conference schedule in this Big Ten is pretty damn good, I would think.
