Free Wilton Speight!
Teams will just be loading the box vs us go forward and daring us to throw. Ugh.

I'm with you that Smith doesn't have big play capability, but Green is like a worse version of him. Smith will consistently break tackles and get extra yards where Green would struggle to get past the first guy. He's also not that fast.
September 19th, 2015 at 4:33 PM ^
I think he's a lot faster than Smith. Definitely not as tough. I think he's shown the ability to make a cut more than Smith, too.

Based on what i've seen so far I prefer Issac but man watching Smith drives me nuts. It's like the offenisve lineman have "run here" painted on their ass because he sure loves to slam it into piles vs open field.
I'll be interested in see how the UFR grades him out. To me it seemed like he missed a LOT of holes by insisting into running into a mass of bodies instead of green grass. I don't get it.

Green? Uh, nope....not to this point, anyway.
I agree about Isaac -- he can break the big run. I do like Smith's ability catching out of the backfield. With our QB situation, checkdowns will be the order of the day.

We averaged 6 yards per carry for 250 total. That's pretty solid
September 20th, 2015 at 12:37 AM ^
that average is wildly inflated by Isaac's 76-yard run

We had 5 punts in this game and one turnover on downs. The inability for Rudock to hit open receivers and our sometimes mysterious play calling on short yardage has me slightly worried. Competent QB play and a little more push by the OL and we win this game 49-7.
I want to see us stomp people again however I think we need to wait another year or two to get players who have the right attitude.
September 19th, 2015 at 3:28 PM ^
I'm going to go out on a limb and say the coaches kept the playcalling pretty blah on short yardage situations because the game was never really in doubt and they didn't want to show anything. Not to mention, they figured the offense should be able to gain a yard against UNLV no matter what.

LOL..those receivers dropped balls that hit them in the hands, at what point do the WR's get questioned because they still cant seperate from defenders.
If youre asking your QB's to always be perfect then maybe the WR's should run good routes and actually created seperation like I see other programs WR's do on a consistent basis.

Rudock may be on a short leash against BYU.

was very good. I think his blocking on pass protection has been keeping him off the field as you suggest. I hope that block was a sign of things to come.

Brian Griese threw 6 in the entire 1997 season, and on top of that hit numerous deep passes, including a couple in the Rose Bowl. Anybody who says Rudock is the same kind of QB is nuts.
The argument that Morris has never shown anything so he doesn't deserve any playing time strikes me as pretty strange, given that he played behind an OL that couldn't block a middle school team and for a coaching staff that gave every appearance of not having a clue what it was doing.
Unless Rudock and the rest of the offense—especially the OL—improve dramatically in the next few weeks, the MSU game is going to be rough.

I like your Griese comparison point.
I don't like your Shane Morris comparison point. Were we to smash Rudock's three games together with Morris's two starts and rank them, you'd see that the two worst games belonged to Shane. I know this isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, but it's not like Morris hasn't had his shot. He looked awful.
I also, at this point, think we need to be in Trust the Coaches mode with respect to QB play. Harbaugh has earned that.

Unfortunately, they take the home run part too seriously and fling it out of the stadium.

He got knocked over by a pillow after a 1 or 2 yard gain on every carry. Green is just not a capable B1G running back.

He was the starter last season over Smith and was well on his way to a 1,000+ yard season until he got hurt.
September 19th, 2015 at 6:13 PM ^
Green is not bringing it in practice.
September 19th, 2015 at 3:12 PM ^
I know we're trying to get better, and we'll eventually get there, but this was a pretty poor showing offensively against UNLV. Rudock may be our most capable QB (sad to say), but I don't believe he's that much better than we have seen over the past 7 years. Blake O'Neill can punt the ball more accurately than Rudock can throw it.

Hopefully our defense can limit BYU more than anyone else they've faced.
We definitely have a better D than Nebraska, and probably UCLA as well. Boise's is pretty good, but they also were playing at BYU so they didn't have to deal with a loud crowd.
I think our defense is going to have to hold BYU to 21 or less to give us a chance to win.
Just can't see this offense scoring more than 24 against BYU.
