Snowflakes Thread: Offense Vs. Ohio State

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

I am actually in Ann Arbor using a browser on a small tablet, so if this works, awesome for me (not for the game) -

This will be your thread for snowflakes and hot takes regarding the offense and offensive playcalling versus Ohio State.

...why has college football decided that holding at the o-line on run plays should only rarely be called?

They sometimes will call holding on pass protection.

But on running plays, a hold call near the line of scrimage is now a very rare thing.  Some of the holds this week were really easy to see, yet were not called.

If this is the way holding is going to be called, that is a huge advantage for the OSU style of running.

Holding has becoome like travaling in the NBA--they won't call even the obvious cases.

We can hope our Oline becomes stronger and even more experienced next year. Though odds are that we may have to wait until a whole new crop of guys come in before we see a dominate run blocking Oline. Most of our Oline have been here for four years and are still struggling in that area. I mean being 6'5 and 300 pounds doesn't mean a kid is going to be a good offensive lineman. You do need a certain level of talent.

Walking back to car, I decided to check the box score -

As for Rudock, the 19 for 32 and 263 yards translates to 13.8 yards per completion and 8.2 yards per attempt. I sort of get the feeling that the 1 TD - if we make a few more of those deep throws - is more TDs, but you can't play it again.

The ground game, yeah, it will be interesting to see how this gets addressed - 25 carries for all of 57 yards, or 2.3 yards per carry. We really needed to get this part of the game going and....well....

The run game obviously struggled, but the way the defense was performing didn't help the offensive play calling. We were moving the ball well, making big plays when we needed. The biggest thing I wish we would have done differently is avoid the cuteness with the red zone playcalling, we should have targeted Butt, Darboh, or Chesson.. and I think we out thought ourselves there. The punt block penalty and lack of touchdowns in the red zone changed the momentum of the game.

As this is a offense snowflake thread, the only thing I can say is offensive line. It confounds me that Indiana has a better OL than Michigan, and we just were bore the brunt of another elite OL.

It's like Hoke & Co. not only didn't develop Olinemen for a shit, but also didn't evaluate them properly either. How is it possible to be so bad a run blocking? So strange.

Two things killed them: (1) the utter lack of a run game (a perfect combo of poor blocking and terrible RB vision), (2) not converting TDs in the redzone twice. If those are both TDs, we're tied at halftime and actually stay in the game despite the defense's ineptness (would have been 28-21 rather than 28-13).

Of course no way the loss is on the O. Rudock did the best he could today.

We desperately need a RB. And better players at OL.

So Cole to Center next year, right? Yeesh, he got abused more than a few times today. Not even including when he got put in at RT against Bosa... WTF were they thinking there?

Edit: This is assuming Newsome is functional at LT next year of course.

Single blocking Bosa is a stupid idea as well. He wreaked havoc all over the place. Granted they moved him around but the OL were confused when they moved him around. He dominated every one on one matchups and ate the OT for lunch and dinner.

They tried double teaming Bosa. Though it's tough to do it on every play. Bosa had our Oline so worried and paranoid all day. I actually saw Kyle Kalis momentarily block an OSU player, then quickly set him free for a clean hard shot on Rudock. Kyle did it because he was going over to help block Bosa even though Bosa wasn't anywhere near Rudock. I thought that was so silly. Kyle has to continue blocking the player in front of him in that situation. We were so excited to get Kyle because he was a highly touted five star recruit, but the kid has been somewhat of a disappointment.

Hoke failed miserably at recruiting offensive lineman. Simple as that.

He got Darboh and Chesson right. Do those guys have another year? Butt might be our best TE ever to play here.

Jury is still out on RBs but they might not get the chance.

Wish the play calling was more aggressive when on their side of the field. We kicked 2 FG, they kicked 0. The FG when we were down 17 was a poor decision.

We were torching them in the air with short to medium routes but it seems we got away from that in the 2nd half.

Our offense is predictable to put it gently. Always waste first down running with Smith. Then we fail to block on bubble screens on 2nd. Then we heave up 20 yard passes and sometimes get them. I'm sick of going on 9 minute drives only coming up with 3 points.

This gets at an excellent point.

Think about all of the mismatches and personnel deficiencies we were trying to account for today. Doubling Bosa. Deploying Peppers as a lead back because we don't have one. Playing Perry extensively because there isn't another playable WR after Chesson and Darboh. Throwing constantly because the OL can't run block. And throwing mostly short because the receivers can't get separation.

Talent-wise, we have a long, long way to go.
